The myth of Mario the recruiter

I’ve been saying it all year. How many guys on this team took a leap from last year? Horton and Moten come to mind. Not much else. We are either recruiting rankings and not studs or have a major development issue.

I think Mario gets bamboozled by all the elite kids that he thinks he is gonna sign and they’re just using him for pay raises and because of the money he has he’s still able to get the better players ( low/mid 4 stars) when the elite players end up elsewhere..

Mario needs top 50 type players, the kind that UGA,Bama,OSU and of late Oregon have been signing of late the kids that you can’t ***** up to succeed.

Will be curious to see how many of the over 100 + stud players that have visited the last month or so that have raved about how great their visit was and they will have Miami in their top schools etc.actually end up here.Im sadly thinking not too many.

Next year his first full class will be juniors/RS SOPHS

TrumpyCane thinks that will be his class that decides his future

He might have to rely on Emory Williams or Luke Nickle if he can’t land another big QB

Will have to revert back to bro ball and run it 40 times a game if either are the starting QBs next year.

Name the 3rd 4th and 5th year players, specifically on defense that were recruited and signed here. No transfers just players that signed with us straight out of high school and are still on the team.

this is what most people dont understand. It takes talent, but it takes older talent. Not players that just finished their soph and freshman years. Stacking classes is a slow process, even with the transfer portal. Thats how the monster rosters in the sport are built. When Frederique is a junior, watch how different the team looks on the field. Pruitt made the biggest defensive play of the game, another puppy that will bite much harder 2 years from now.

He isn’t an “elite recruiter.” The gap between Bama (under Saban), UGA, OSU, and recently Texas, and everyone else is bigger than anyone is willing to admit. He’s second tier. Which is a shame bc he needs first tier talent across the board to win.
But so many on CIS think he is

He’s nowhere close to an “Elite closer or recruiter”

Another thread that reinforces my belief that we have - by far - the WORST fanbase in America. The one thing Mario does well, that the data shows, is recruiting. Hit the other stuff that there’s actually an argument on.

If I picked ten of y’all to put in a room with a recruit to try to convince to come here, a good 7 of you (with tears in your eyes) would be begging the kid not to come here. It’s astounding.

Overrated. Did Alabama recruiting suffer after he left? No.

And do we want to talk about his inability to build a quality staff and general lack of player development?

What Metric are you using for Alabama to determine their recruiting is the same? I hope you're using that same metric to determine if Miami's recruiting has improved or been the same since Mario has been here.

People don’t watch enough college football to see that every program out there is flawed. I mean, Ohio State and Alabama laid those eggs with THAT talent on their rosters?
Unfortunately, a good 60% of the people on this board exemplify why we have the worst fanbase in CFB. Imagine having the talent that Ole Miss, Alabama, and Ohio State had and underperforming like they did. We still have holes on this team that need to be filled and addressed. Also, other than Ole Miss, Ryan Day and Kalen Deboer inherited programs loaded with talent. Look at what we had three years ago. Not even close.

I completely agree. This is the result of poor high school recruiting and glaring portal misses, and it’s finally blowing up in our faces. Enough is enough.

The lack of talent and defensive development is beyond concerning. Mario needs to adapt quickly. He has to overpay for blue-chip players and true difference-makers in the portal if that’s what it takes. On top of that, Dennis Smith has to go, he ******* sucks and his performance isn’t cutting it.

He will go down as Mario’s D’Onofrio. Yes, I said it.

This team is barely a .500 program without Cam. If significant changes aren’t made, 2025 could get ugly—very ugly. Especially if we don’t invest heavily in the portal. The time to act is now.

I keep trying to tell myself dennis doesn’t have that important of a role but ****..Why does mario trust him of all people? What has he done to warrant that

The part I don’t get is as an ‘elite recruiter’ once he lands a good position class basically write off the next 2 because we can’t seem to stack real depth.

This. Especially player development.
Not sure Dawson or Guidry are teachers at all. Dawson seems to be a x and o guy, but he doesnt have feel. Not sure what Guidry does tbh.
This. Comments like this reveal so much more about the commenter than the comment itself. Let me explain why @rascon

Dawson is the OC and QB coach. Guidry is the DC and secondary coach. While the results and accountability ultimately fall on their shoulders for all position groups, Dawson isn’t the one teaching technique to the OL. Guidry isn’t teaching footwork and hand placement with the DL. Therefore, when you say “Not sure Dawson or Guidry are teachers at all,” you’re actually making somewhat of a correct statement, although you intended it as a slam.

The player development commentary is just dumb.
TE play was good/great this year. The only reason I say it’s not excellent is because that group was a little slow to start.
WR play was excellent. Horton is probably the poster child for PlaYeR DuhVeLopMenT this year. X is X. JG played better this year.
OL play was very solid all year. Spare me the running lanes comment - most of the runs are RPOs which are slower developing, zone blocked schemes. Do I wish we ran more sweeps and counters? Sure but we don’t. There are only so many snaps. Pass pro got better throughout the year. There was a play against Wake where Cam was flat footed and moon walking because he had so much time. Yeah it was Wake, but it was still impressive. Cici is a first rounder. Carpenter and Rivers played solidly all year and Markel Bell certainly improved throughout the year.
DL has me wondering, but how much could we expect from Blount, Scott, and Artaviois as true freshmen? J Horton has been hurt all year. However Anthony Campbell improved. The DEs were a disappointment, mainly because Bain was hurt half the year along and Baron can’t set an edge.
Lbs - Popo and Pruitt look to be future stars. Wes improved a little, but he is what he is at this point.
Secondary - blow it all up except for OJ.

So we have one position group that sucked all year and another that was disappointing. Those groups out weigh the gains from I Horton, Fletcher, Lyle, Arroyo, Markel Bell, Popo, Pruitt and OJ? You and others, while throwing out ridiculous takes using the buzz words of the day like eVaLs and pLaYerDUHvELopMeNt, completely omit anything to the contrary. Then you mention the coordinators not teaching as if it’s their fault for the lack of development (that’s not really lacking) because you don’t know that most of the players practice time is spent with their position coaches rather than the coordinator with the exception of QB and secondary.

Now before you get feisty and reply, please know that I heard this same crrapp 20 years ago walking out of the OB after a loss against some team we should’ve beaten. The guy who said was a dip$chit, so “player development” makes me feel like Alex toward the end of A Clockwork Orange with eyelids propped open with toothpicks as I’m getting electrotherapy treatment. “Evals” is now added to the list.
