The Miami Job

"The late Cardinal of College Football, Beano Cook, once called The University of Miami, 'the greatest dynasty since Caesar.'"

It wasn't luck. It can be repeated.

I appreciate your optimism. But lets look at the cons.

Stadium is a ghost town down the stretch
Inept AD and president
Limited budget as far as paying coaches and assistants
Higher academic requirements
Stadium is not on campus and further away than the OB was.

The game is played by players. The best players in the world live in the neighborhoods surrounding that ****ty stadium.

I think the game day atmosphere matters to kids today a lot more than people think. Plus although south florida might be the most fertile recruiting area, UM still has to recruit FSU and UF. Two schools that kids down here see no problem with choosing over UM. Texas, LSU, USC, Georgia, Ohio state, don't have to worry about the recruiting competition in their area as much as UM does.

I´m not sure if Golden and his Guido act is that appreciated by recruits and their families down here. Southerner like Coley or JJ is more to their liking. When Golden turns up for an in home in his shiny suit.....

The real question is, Do Butch's freckles make him black enough for Luther Campbell to be excited about the hire?

personally (not a bit of inside information), I think Golden just wants to listen to what PSU has to say. I think he will offer UM a chance to match, and if not, he bolts. In my mind, I think Al isn't really underhanded, and will give Miami a chance to match what PSU offers. We may not like his direction or game day decisions, but I don't think anyone can question his character and integrity.

I am. He said from Day 1 he wasnt going to make excuses and thats all hes done.

He hates the NCAA cloud so much he is running back to Child Rapist U to coach under a "cloud" again.

But Al loves the cloud it will give him an excuse for not winning.

Exactly. He can hide his incompetence with the "cloud" excuse and continue to employ the worst DC I've ever seen. Our defense would be better if the players coordinated themselves.

While Al may not have officially left at this point, he has mentally checked out of this job. He feels the walls closing in on him as he's been exposed as a fraud. At this point, he can't possibly return to UM with any kind of credibility. Good riddance!

That scene would have been better if Alec Baldwin had stabbed himself in the throat.

Also, Beano - AKA "that fat tub of goo" - said lots of uncomplimentary things about Miami as well. I hope he's currently rotting in ****.

You've obviously never studied home field impact and variance. Leaving the Orange Bowl was devastating. We essentially forfeited 2 points per game on average, which is a greater adjustment in performance than all but a top tier quarterback.

Check the Dolphins results in their Orange Bowl years (1966-1986) versus the Sun Life years (1987-2013). They have declined 2.7 points per game on average in road games, indicating that the team in general has not been as good as the Shula years. But the decline in home games has been 5.3 points per game, from +7.5 to +2.2. That's unbelievable. It demonstrates how far the Orange Bowl was above the typical venue. I wrote to Dee and Shalala in 2007 emphasizing those numbers. At least the Dolphins could pretend the new venue would approximate the Orange Bowl. We had two decades worth of data and chose to ignore it. But why should I be surprised, given the conventional wisdom that the stadium doesn't matter? I never met one successful speculator who didn't understand home field values and how they vary.

If Golden leaves, I hope he is candid with the media in regard to Miami's stadium situation and how it regulates the program. That would be a needed jolt to the university, and to message boards like this one. The stadium should be the focal point every year, trumping every other variable.

Nobody is saying that the stadium is not a negative. I hate the place.

But the last time I was in the Orange Bowl, I saw Virginia pound Miami out 48-0. Nothing is more important than personnel. The gap between South Florida and the rest of the country gets wider every year. Miami has almost doubled up the next closest-city (Houston) in terms of NFL talent. I'd expect that to continue as more kids outside of South Florida drop out of Pop Warner.

Every other factor is ancillary to talent.

As was stated.

Golden's silence could go a long way as to where he stands..

Is he out the door..no nothing is done, however he has to be looking hard into the PSU job.

If he was happy with Miami he would have put these rumors to rest.

Just leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth.

I'm ready to move on from the Tie.

I look at this like a business decision. I'm not offended that Golden is entertaining an offer from a school where he both played and coached and who might substantially increase his salary. I think most people would do the same. I also respect that he hasn't said anything to the media. Coaches get pigeon-holed into saying one thing or the other by the media in these situations, and it always backfires. Saying nothing is better. If you say you're interviewing, you're fcked. If you say you're staying and leave, you're fcked.

UM, however, does need to change its mentality. I think UM needs to learn to think like the assassin if it wants to be one. It needs to regain control of the situation. It can do so by determining what's best for the university right now at this moment where a dynamic change could take place. Miami has an opportunity here to control its own destiny and is in better position now than 3 years ago.

Is there any doubt that Petrino or Chud plus staff wouldn't be an immense upgrade over Golden? There is no doubt for me especially when Golden hasn't given Miami comfort about what he's going to do with Mark D and whether he can handle SoFLa recruiting and it's associated peculiarities.

UM needs to make its move and not wait for Golden. Be decisive. Set the hire up and encourage Golden to leave.

D,who are a 2-3 guys you'd like us to call up if/when the job comes open?

Petrino would be my first choice. He'd need some help recruiting, but this program needs a true-blue coach. I like the chip on his shoulder, and he wants the job.

I think Chud can be successful with the right staff. He's been out of the college game for a decade. I don't know if this is realistic from the administration's standpoint, but something like Cristobal at OL (I've heard Chud and Kehoe don't get along), Hurlie, Barrow, Kevin Patrick, Coley (he's close to Cristobal and can learn from Chud) and Chud's old boss, Butch, as defensive coordinator.

From your lips to God's ear. I have distaste for Mario and I doubt he jumps from Bama to here. THE U is a platform to get to NFL. I want a HC that WANTS to go to the NFL. Hungry and aggressive is what has worked here. If Coaker had been, he would have left before he destroyed the program. If Al wanted the NFL he would stay until he won NC and then take a plum offer from the pros. No Joe Pa's or Bobby's please. In there 60 or 100 years of coaching, they have like 4 NCs between them. Give me another drunk like Dennis, let him go 2 for 5 and haul ***.

I understand that this is a Business.. and Quite Frankly... He should listen to his alma mater... However..

The way this is being handled by him (which is very surprising because he's usually a step ahead, which shows you that PSU is run by idiots leaking ****)... Takes away ALOT of positive vibes that AG had to lead this program where it needed to go. Especially if he stays and Coach D is retained.

All the good he did the past 3 years is almost out the window to most. I don't know if he's even wanted back as much as he was before Friday..

Agree 100%. We need more guys with NFL aspirations, since they are the ones who will see this job for the opportunity it truly is.

The Miami job isn't for everyone. Some people prefer Big Ten mediocrity and fake morals. But if you want to be great - historically great - there is no job with as high of a ceiling as the University of Miami.

Now WHO could he be talking about?

UM should encourage Golden to leave, but they need to maximize the buyout to Golden's contract. Don't forget that Houston paid PUS a significant sum to buyout OB's contract and they should be prepared to pay to extricate Golden from his contract.

Many of you that now want Butch back hated him in the day because he left for triple the money and a gig in the NFL. Dont see how you can blame Golden for being interested in his dream job and getting a big raise to boot. I doubt many (if any) of you would not leave your current job for your dream job and much more money.

You don't encourage him to leave. One person ****ing in the drinking water is already one too many. If he doesn't go, how do you feel about that scenario?
