The defense is hopeless...

So....2 times last year we didnt convert our short yardage situations without our headcoaches S/C program implemented that means we abandon the run for the rest of his career here? Do me a favor and see what type of offense Golden ran at Temple before coming here...

And Goldens first interview here after being signed he said that to the press...so apparently im not sure where youve been getting your info from

Dude, we do not have the personnel to run a "smash mouth" offense. I have no doubt that this is AG's long term plan. We do not have a quality RB with the size to handle pounding the ball between the tackles 20 times a game. We have JAGs and Duke Johnson. Additionally, our O-line doesn't seem to be terribly adept at run blocking. Fisch is working with the cards he was dealt and he is doing the best job he can do. Has his play calling been perfect? Of course not. But I like what he's done. The offense is not the problem.
LOLOLOL. We don't have the personnel? Are you ******* kidding me?

Who's the smash mouth ball control RB? Duke is obviously too small. So are we talking James or Clements?
Mike James, with Duke getting some carries? This is the ACC, not the SEC. We don't need Mark Ingram man.

Now who else on our offense isn't suited for a smash mouth offense? Our huge OL? Our FB? Our TE's that block better than they catch? Please do elaborate.

When we need to score 35+ points in a game to stand a chance, a run first offense with Mike James as the featured back is a gigantic fail.

Our huge offensive line has been huge since Butch Davis. Being huge and being good is not the same thing. The current group is decent at pass blocking, not so much at run blocking. Our TEs are JAGs (at everything). Hagens is a JAG too.

Fisch has put in an offense that maximizes the skills of the players he has. He's doing a good job.

What is clear is that our coaches don't trust a couple of career 3ypc guys to carry our offense.

We are definitely in a mode where we want to score early and force the other team to dumb down their offense. ******* pathetic but it is what it is.

And you can't blame him for that.

Thanks for the analysis Coach

You can't fault this OL for not being good at run blocking when we have an OC that isn't committed to running the ball.

And I strongly disagree w/ the bolded, for the reasons that I've stated throughout this thread.

Thank you. Besides, how do we even know how good the line truly is at run blocking when there is no commitment to the run?

I am 100% on board with what Alex said about Hagans. If we are going to run I strongly disagree with Fisch's single back mentality.

Last year we saw immediately how important Hagans was when he went out.

Now I know they are dead set on keeping Dukes workload down and MJ/Clements are not exactly all Americans but it does them no favors trying to force them into the middle if the line with no lead blockers. Especially when our center already needs help.

Or if were gonna run....lets do out out of another formation other than the shotgun

What would you consider a "commitment" to the run?

That does make sense.

And stop running that god awful pitch play that never works.

When you're up 23-7 at home and on a 23-0 run, and the other team is tired, and you have 1st and goal at the 2, you run the ******* ball. You don't throw the ******* ball, not after your OL is starting to wear down the opposing team's line and open up holes.

Not passing on virtually every down?

Well said. That single play turned the entire game around. But no, on a 23-0 run, with a ****** defense, it's advisable to keep chucking the ball and giving them an opportunity to get the ball back via short drives or INTs (like this instance)

I'm not in the camp that says "run into 8 man fronts all game to prove our commitment to the run"... we can run 5 times a game or 50 times a game.. i don't really care either way, as long as we're taking advantage of what the defense is doing.

Football 101: When you are on a run and have built a nice lead, keep throwing it to allow the opponent to potentially and more easily get back into the game.

This is what I have gleaned from the football gurus on here today.

The ONLY way we beat a decent team is if we make it a shootout. We are atop the ACC standings with the worst defense in the Country. Fisch needs to keep doing what he is doing and hope the Defense gets turnovers here and there because they arent stopping a sole regardless of how much time they are on the field.

I mostly agree with this but you have to admit that with such a young group on D, the longer they are on the field, the worse it gets. I really do worry about them wearing down as a whole as the year goes on as well, and making games like UVA, Duke, and USF much more interesting than they should.

I just don't know that we have much choice.

i think we are who we are, and have to just stick with that. if we could get consistent run blocking, that would really help, but the oline's strength, and our strength is in passing and pass protection. we're heading into game #7, there arent going to be wholesale changes now, we have to hope that morris can outscore teams.
