Stadium renovation

What do you think Ross makes in parking, Merchandise & Concession sales?

Not a dime more than he would have without a roof. If he were spending 350 million to build more stores and hot dog stands then it would make sense. He's spending it on a roof.

He must think that he's going to get a lot bigger crowds at regular season games or that he's going to get a lot of events coming to town. Pretty big gamble in my opinion but then again, Mr. Ross has a bigger bank account than I do so maybe he knows what he's doing.

Just a guess too.... given the fact that he just dropped 350 mil, I seriously doubt he even considers letting UM out of our lease. He needs the revenue.

true, but when he sells this team he will make a killing with this rennovation/upgrade

better than nothing, but still blows. 98% of seats will still be way too far.

The atmosphere and crowd noise should improve dramatically with the addition of the roof. Plus, it won't be as scorchingly hot and sunny in the So Fla summers.

If the only thing left to complain about is that most of the seats are too far away, I'd say they've done pretty well and fixed about 75-80% of the problems.

he is literally pulling that out of his a$$. the whole idea of this renovation is to move seats closer to the field and there are plenty of good seats now. certainly enough for the amount of fans that show up.

How exactly would they move seats closer to the field? They are adding seats closer, but the existing stands, which will still account for 95+% of the seats will still be far as **** from the field! like they've always been. The playing surface at Sunlife is so wide you can literally fit two fields side by side in there. It's too **** big. It was a stupid design.

so the price is that the dolphins will be around for 30 more years. Price seems steep

Seats were said to be closer to the field... How much closer? I'm not sure anyone actually really knows. The roof will help capsilate the crowd noise. The 2013 UM-UF in that upgraded stadium would've been loud as ****.

If your are just counting problems, then yes you knocked off most...but I'd say being too far is much more important than any of those other complaints. I sit in the lower bowl and can't even recognize who made a tackle or is carrying the ball. The field is literally 80 yards away from my seat.

Funny, I thought the biggest problem was the lack of atmosphere....that the place was dead and quiet inside, no noise, no home field advantage, etc.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, they're supposed to be putting in a lot of big-*** TV's (see pics above) to help with the fact that you can't see the action clearly.

I think that's a byproduct of having a cavernous stadium that is 40yds from the sidelines to the first row. That's the largest distance from sidelines to stands in the NFL. 50k fans is more than enough to make some deafening crowd noise in the right sized stadium.

Which is why putting a roof on it and moving seats closer to the field will help.

Not sure why you're ****-bent on dissing the plan. It's a free upgrade for UM football games, and will directly alleviate most of the issues UM fans complain about. Seems like a no-brainer...but I guess some people have to complain about everything.

When does that waterpark open next door that Ross was also planning? I'm going to run a shuttle bus from the WalMart parking lot to the front gate. Maybe throw in some Canes-Wake tix with each ride. God, that area blows. At $350 mil and Beckham supposedly willing to spend $250 mil, I'm not sure why they didn't just go in together with Daaaahna offering a couple hundred grand (over 50 years) and just build a complex together somewhere more attractive.

beckham and mls wanted closer to 25k seats. i'm sure our negotiations were very serious, but i can't imagine that they'd want to build a 50k capacity building as a soccer-first venue.

Well, what he means about the seats being closer, is that this really isn't bringing people closer to the field. Its not like they are moving all the seats forward, all they are doing is adding to the front. While that will be better, it still won't change the fact the the seats are too far still.

That wasn't my intention. I said before it's better than nothing of course....it just still doesn't address my biggest issue, which is the view from the seats. Short of demolishing it and starting over this is probably the best you could hope for.

I thought the field was so much wider so that it could accommodate a soccer field? They're adding seats and moving them closer, but also written into the deal was a payout if it hosts a World Cup match? How is that going to work? And if they could add closer seats while still retaining the dimensions for a soccer field....why didn't they do it years ago? Why did they ever build it that way in the first place?

Those are questions for rational minds.

They have no place here.

I think they dropped 13-15K seats (mostly from the upper deck). Does anyone know when this starts and ends?

I was just reading an article about how the Marlins deal was extremely close to including an adjacent MLS stadium. That's kind of what I was implying. It wouldn't have solved out venue size issues but it was just curious that we have two entities supposedly willing to pony up over half a billion dollars of private money and that they didn't explore joining forces to at least swindle the government together.

If I remember correctly, when Ross proposed these renovations in 2013 and tried to sell it to the public, The Fins stated that the entire lower bowl was being redesigned for the sole purpose of bringing the fans closer to the field. It's my understanding that they are not just adding a few rows of seats in front of what's there now, they are changing the entire viewing angle of both sidelines.

it was because of baseball too

Capacity will be around 65k instead of 76k. Seats will be removed from the upper deck to make room for the 4 video screens. Plus the avg seat will be enlarged by 11% so you lose around 7k seats just due to the new seats going in. There will be seats added on the sidelines so net result will be around 10k reduction.

That's the load that was intentionally sold to the public. It's amazing how many people still believe it, that we'll see a sophisticated redesign of the lower bowl.

Not the case at all. See the Alabama/Notre Dame championship game. Clumsy additional rows in front. That's all it is. Just more of them. They'll be temporary, to allow for a soccer configuration to be easily restored.

Otherwise we'll have a patched roof that is hardly ideal, but it's merely the patch that best suits the old pathetic design. That's a patch by definition. It's laughable how many people are celebrating a patch job. A patch job that now threatens a billion dollars if you tally all of them.

Let me guess, in another 5 or 6 years we'll be treated to a subsequent patch. And the rationale for that. It reminds me of my old Macintosh Quadra days, when there was always a reason to buy the newest Power PC upgrade card, the one that was, "the equivalent of a brand new computer," since now I'm only 25% slower than my neighbors, not 50%.

Are any other communities out there scheming for their next half million dollar patch of a 1987 venue in a horrendous boring location? And, if so, are we jealous of them, or applauding them? It's amazing what passes for logic in this town.

This substandard patch theory you're supposing has a bit of a flaw. The NFL. Ross did this under the directive of the NFL. He didn't do it to placate Dolphins and Canes fans, who I assume you believe Ross feels comfortable lying to. Even if he did I doubt he'd feel the same way about lying to the NFL.

Seattle's stadium is football specific and it allows for the soccer to be played there. Football stadium dimensions aren't the problem. Suggesting that temporary seats will be put in place to accommodate soccer dimensions and that is their definition of closer seating just sounds asinine.

You guys should find the time laps of the Texas A&M renovation that is taking place. They also had seats too far from the sideline. The solution is not to add rows that are flat to the field to be closer but to first lower the field. Dig it out as they did I think 7 feet lower. This is what duke plans to do. Duke has pledged to "get as close as the NCAA allows" to maintain enough room for TV cameras and crew..
Miami needs to lower the bowl. Only problem in Miami is that water table. Its probaby a couple feet below where the current field is. The drainage system would also have to include sump pumps should their ever be a breack of the water proof membraine below. These are big costs. #350M is a lot of money and would sound to include a lower bowl rebuild.

Sad though as that area sucks.. DC got smart and built its new baseball stadium in town near the water front. Its reachable by metro. The whole area is blowing up because of it. They struk gold where the MCI center made the sketchy Chinatown area blow up as well. Now they want to bring the Redskins back into the city.. and perhaps even a 20,000 seat soccer only venue in a damaged part of the city but near the metro..

If you are looking for a way to combine Soccer with NFL look to what the Falcons are planning. They have a system that will close up the upper deck and remove seating in the lower bowl to accommodate soccer.

When is this going to start/finish?

With all the renovations they've done in the past and that are expected in the future, I just don't get why they wouldn't build a brand new state of the art stadium in the parking lot and put Sunlife out of it's misery.
