Someone Who Knows Things

I really think that watching some of last years games that our Safety play was atrocious. The constant jumping routes and getting beat over the top in several instances cost us 3 games. Hopefully Powell and Harris or whoever is playing don't try and play hero ball.

The D-Line is going to be able to rotate and wear out other teams. I think we are legit 3 deep on the line this year.

The depth on O is so much better than it has been in several years. I think we are going to average close to 40 a game this year.

mastering the routine was not a strength of last years safeties, lets just leave it at that

To me, safety is a position where you can live with guys, who if not stars, just have to be sound and solid. We get that this season, and it may actually be an upgrade over what we had last year -- with names that may not get all that much recognition

I'll raise my hand. And repeat that I don't want to rely on a freshman DT. If he beats out legitimately good options, then he earned that spot and awesome for us. But until I see Cook, Horton and Moten looking like quality ACC DTs, and then see Scott leapfrog them in the depth chart, I won't believe it was earned, just that those other guys weren't good enough. There's a difference.

perfect scenario is that he's a late rotation guy in games where we are well ahead and the opponent is in throw-game mode(and has to pass on every down). He's probably not ready to play a lot of snaps and be counted on to hold up consistently in the run game

That's why blowing out teams is important -- it helps you build depth organically

2005 was the last year in my view when we really had elite talent. That defense especially was really good for much of the year. NFL guys all over

They were #3 going into that Gatech game. Then,... the program fell off a cliff

That Va Tech game…
Thinking about that defensive performance makes me want to cry. The fact that it was almost 20 years ago makes me want to cry even more.

they literally ended Marcus Vick's career it seemed like

And honestly, that was the night I thought Kyle Wright turned the corner as a QB(despite his relatively modest stats for that game).

One of my favorite games ever. I remember College Gameday picking VaTech. All of ESPN just raving about VaTech, Lane Stadium, Marcus Vick. And then we kicked the **** out them in the Storm Troopers

I wanted to say this earlier, think Meesh is more of a calibrated safety and risk averse. He’ll be a good defensive QB lining us up.

Is there a link to watch this game or highlights? I don't remember it.

Tried to explain this concept for yearssss while we brostyle for an extra decade plus while spread revolution was taking place.. tough times man..

It’s all there for the taking this year.

I know we’ve said that for 20 years, but we’ve never recruited classes back to back like this and added a proven elite quarterback before. It’s not all smoke and mirrors. We have proven good players at literally every single spot, most importantly the most critical position. Losing more than a game or MAYBE 2 is simply inexcusable.

There is NO REASON to not win the league this year. We just need to be neutral in coaching. Don’t get outcoached multiple times and this really should be a party in Charlotte in December.
It’s almost too perfect to be true…

The story is already written. Mario comes back to alma mater and hits pay-dirt with QB who started out at Incarnate Heart ❤️.:.

Filled in with local grown Dawgs and some Israeli Mercenaries…

We ALL need nay I say DESERvE this… Please. On God!

we've had guys who weren't superstars (Reed, Blades, Taylor, Williams -- my Mt Rushmore of UM safeties) who provided really reliable play. They weren't necessarily all-Americans who made a lot of great plays, what their strength was -- they didn't make any bad/stupid ones

Players like Hurlie Brown, Charles Pharms, Bobby Harden, James Lewis, Casey Greer, Terris Harris

I don't ever really recall a game where I said, ''geez, those guys really hurt us today."

You can win with guys like that if you have other strong assets around them.

while it's true that ''you are what your record says you are'' (shout out to Tuna Parcells), HOW you win games at the college level tells you a lot about a team and just how good/dominant they are

And style of play, tempo, coaching style, etc, will determine in many instances if you blow out teams that are lesser, or you let them stick around.

I truly believe this is the season where Mario has to evolve and become 'Air Cristobal' and just dictate to Dawson that every game we come out and get Ward going, and score 40-points a game. The offensive weaponry is there ( we are rated number 1 or 2 in every offensive positions in the ACC, and top 10 nationally) and you have the triggerman in place

Score early and often, you can put teams behind the 8-ball, and now you can unleash what is the best part of your defense -- the Dline -- and have them come in waves without having to worry about scraping against the run. And this suits younger players who still aren't physically matured( but can play in certain settings)

Blowouts matter, the more I research and think about this, I realize they are vital in various ways,

I had lunch Friday with someone who knows things. We have been having this same lunch since 2004. He’s been at practices since 1997. Here’s what he had to say:

DL is lights out. Particularly mentioned Bain, Mesidor and Justin Scott. Scott — “day one potential.” Best DL since 2017 easily.

Ward. Best pure thrower we have ever had. Exact quote. No comment on the other QBs.

Loved OL, coaches have been on Carpenter’s *** every practice. Deep and talented. Some concern about RT depth.

Couldn’t say enough about Trader. Smooth smooth smooth. Ny Carr “steal of the class”.

Worries about Safety position.

Arroyo running better than he ever has at Miami. Easy day 2 pick.

Martinez pushing around LBs. Second Level problem.

Brown and Porter are “good not great”. Believes that’s all they have to be with our DL.

“better team than 2017” with “best young talent since 2005”
Thanks for the update.

Call me skeptical of the quote "Best pure thrower we have ever had". I mean, we have an NFL HOF'er in there, but I hope he is proven right.

We have gone yearssss where we couldnt get a backup QB reps or young guy reps in games.. I know because Me and a partner of mine used to be the ONLY one in our crew who would stay and watch those games to see some freshman get time.

Plus there is pros and cons to everything Mario ball will be tuff n fizical, he will bang his team up and probably be down his best players but they will go into columbus shoe and take a W. But a couple weeks later playing mario ball and one mistake and you are in dog fight and get clipped by 3 win stanford or GT trying to be "methodical" (his words)

Hopefully someone like Orgeron let him know how he had to loosen up in 2019 when he had the team and let everyone know PRESEASON they were gonna sling that pill around as they ditched bro style.. Everyone was skeptical til they went into Austin and it was 3rd and 17 and most expected draw and punt play defense. Even LSU fans were skeptical of embracing wide open offense, that changed QUICKLY. With Kirk saying "and THAT is the difference at LSU!"

Invidivually Kam can be a great player and even far better than what we have today, but as far as the impact and what is important for this defense, Solid guys that make less mistakes can be way better for our actual defensive results. Especially when you factor in DL and CBs are all going to be much improved over last season, and LBs are likely more athletic at the least.
