Someone Who Knows Things

I knew this would devolve into a KK debate, which is pointless and not related to OP's post. Focusing on Powell and Harris, I think they're going to be more than good enough. I think we will be pleasantly surprised there, barring injury. It's our depth that has me super concerned, which is exactly what Fire's guy was saying. And of course, having moved Powell back to Safety, we're now relying on Brown to take a big step at Nickel, which is another area of concern.

You're trying to keep a thread on the rails when we can talk about Kinchens, who is no longer here and doesn't impact the season that is starting in 3 weeks in any capacity, for the 17,000th time? ******* balls on you, man. Egregious.

I've said this in a few threads now. I am fully confident Porter will be a good player this year. I am pretty confident Powell will be a good player here. But we will be in a 5 DB (or more) look a lot this year. First of all, because that's almost the base defense. And secondly, because I expect the offense to be lights out and have teams playing catch-up most of the season.

So I feel good about 2 of the 5. Can we find 3 other kids we can count on, plus some depth? Harris, Williams, Hill, Brown, Stafford, Patterson, Richard. Those are likely the kids who will make up the first group that will yield those 3 spots. Who takes control of them?

My money is on Hill at boundary, Brown at nickel, and Harris at Safety. But there is some versatility here. For example, as we get later in the year, you can probably put Patterson at Safety with Harris, and let Powell play nickel. Hill can probably take some nickel snaps. Richard can play Safety or corner, although I like him a lot more at Safety. There is some talent here, but it's definitely uncertain. IMO it'd be MASSIVE though if Hill can really solidify that CB2 spot. It makes fitting these pieces so much easier if we can count on 2 corners, along with Powell. Guidry and Jackson can figure it out from there.

All you guys got is the 1 game he gambled and won....how bout all the games we lost because of the BS renegade I do what I want to because I was an all american. Tell me this if Kam was so good why did he not get drafted on the first day of the draft?
No where in my post did I say he was soo good, maybe you are confused or projecting what someone else said.. I agree overall but you made a comment and it made me think and I just corrected it..

Yep he had 1 good game last year lmao, and yep no good players get drafted after day1..This is just crazy hate for a former player

mastering the routine was not a strength of last years safeties, lets just leave it at that

To me, safety is a position where you can live with guys, who if not stars, just have to be sound and solid. We get that this season, and it may actually be an upgrade over what we had last year -- with names that may not get all that much recognition
Restrepo at PR is a similar thought process. Was more upside AND risk with Ray Ray.

Sometimes safe is better when we have the offense we all expect to see.

Didnt he have a pick 6 in a UVA game where we looked like **** and went to OT? That would be 2 ACC wins all year
I think the question we can ask without knocking our alumni is do we need playmaking safeties to have an elite defense or do we just need elite front 4 pressure with average assignment football play on the back end and good coordinating by Guidry.

I didn't disagree with that, X is so reliable at just getting the ball and not giving it up. Plus Ray Ray was a true freshman last season, that was a factor too, probably

where are all the people that didn't want to rely on a freshman DT? like I said WE ARE FINE with Scott and also keep eye on Jones being brought up too here soon

I have no problems playing a freshman DT.

I just don't want to RELY on a freshman DT. Too many issues with playbook, durability, longer-season, etc.

Rotation. That has always been the key here.

No hate....I just don't understand how KK doesn't get more grief from us for being pedestrian. He is probably the worst Safety we've had that gets way too much hype.

I had lunch Friday with someone who knows things. We have been having this same lunch since 2004. He’s been at practices since 1997. Here’s what he had to say:

DL is lights out. Particularly mentioned Bain, Mesidor and Justin Scott. Scott — “day one potential.” Best DL since 2017 easily.

Ward. Best pure thrower we have ever had. Exact quote. No comment on the other QBs.

Loved OL, coaches have been on Carpenter’s *** every practice. Deep and talented. Some concern about RT depth.

Couldn’t say enough about Trader. Smooth smooth smooth. Ny Carr “steal of the class”.

Worries about Safety position.

Arroyo running better than he ever has at Miami. Easy day 2 pick.

Martinez pushing around LBs. Second Level problem.

Brown and Porter are “good not great”. Believes that’s all they have to be with our DL.

“better team than 2017” with “best young talent since 2005”

...if Miami had better quarterback play in 2017, that 10-3 team is a legit 12-1 squad (beating Pittsburgh, losing a closer game than 38-3 to Clemson and beating Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl, which is where Miami goes at 10-2 or 11-1 that season.)

Just look at what D'Eriq King did to save Manny in 2020 with that 8-1 start (rolled at Clemson), before boat-raced by North Carolina and then falling in Oklahoma State in bowl game after King went down.

If Cam Ward can stay health and this team has found some grit and balls going into year three, this is a 10-2 squad at worst with this schedule.

Good ****, always respect and look forward to your posts.

... because he was an all-around good guy and had some big moments and potential, so his transgressions were fast-forgiven by many.

Same with how a portion of this fan base still talks up Jeff Thomas as being a world-class player if given a 37th shot to get his business together—while not holding him accountable for a horrible attitude, a worse work ethic and some game-changing plays that cost Miami (re: the fumbled punt against Florida in the 2020 opener.)

Nothing against said person, but since 2004, has this person been optimistic?

I really think that watching some of last years games that our Safety play was atrocious. The constant jumping routes and getting beat over the top in several instances cost us 3 games. Hopefully Powell and Harris or whoever is playing don't try and play hero ball.

The D-Line is going to be able to rotate and wear out other teams. I think we are legit 3 deep on the line this year.

The depth on O is so much better than it has been in several years. I think we are going to average close to 40 a game this year.
If we can have our Safeties to play simple “do your JOB” football - they will be more than adequate enough not to hurt us in games.

I’ve said all along that if we can stop beating ourselves and just let the opponent give it a try - we will always be in the conversation come December.

If X can just add a few yards after the catch sim to Berrios who was consistent with his hands and gained some ground. although weren't folks *****ing about berrios on here too?

Ok now you ******* poked the bear talking about Jeff Thomas. What were the other times where he cost Miami? Don’t worry I’ll ******* wait for that answer. And yea he muffed a punt but that wasn’t the reason Miami lost that game. What about the 10 sacks given up by the OL, **** poor tackling, missed chip shot by Bubba, offense having two opportunities at the end but couldn’t do ****.

Jeff was a heck of a talent and was poorly used here. Had terrible qb play and terrible OC’s. Yea there’s no doubt he’s got some demons and struggled off the field. Didn’t take a brainiac to figure that out.
