Someone Who Knows Things

I really think that watching some of last years games that our Safety play was atrocious. The constant jumping routes and getting beat over the top in several instances cost us 3 games. Hopefully Powell and Harris or whoever is playing don't try and play hero ball.

The D-Line is going to be able to rotate and wear out other teams. I think we are legit 3 deep on the line this year.

The depth on O is so much better than it has been in several years. I think we are going to average close to 40 a game this year.

Yeah man, the position is called safety for a reason.

I had lunch Friday with someone who knows things. We have been having this same lunch since 2004. He’s been at practices since 1997. Here’s what he had to say:

DL is lights out. Particularly mentioned Bain, Mesidor and Justin Scott. Scott — “day one potential.” Best DL since 2017 easily.

Ward. Best pure thrower we have ever had. Exact quote. No comment on the other QBs.

Loved OL, coaches have been on Carpenter’s *** every practice. Deep and talented. Some concern about RT depth.

Couldn’t say enough about Trader. Smooth smooth smooth. Ny Carr “steal of the class”.

Worries about Safety position.

Arroyo running better than he ever has at Miami. Easy day 2 pick.

Martinez pushing around LBs. Second Level problem.

Brown and Porter are “good not great”. Believes that’s all they have to be with our DL.

“better team than 2017” with “best young talent since 2005”
Hard to see Martinez pushing someone around when there are no pads on!

There’s a few minor holes in the roster but overall this is the most talented team we’ve had in 20 years. Especially if you weigh the importance of quarterback. The only thing that can stop this team from being a playoff team is the coaches.

where are all the people that didn't want to rely on a freshman DT? like I said WE ARE FINE with Scott and also keep eye on Jones being brought up too here soon

Sounds like our secondary weaknesses can be hidden due to DL potential. If the DL struggles, our secondary will get killed.

Maybe at CB but even with a good DL like we have it’s hard to “hide” mediocre safety play. I won’t be surprised if Teams with competent passing attacks (probably UL, VT, Cuse to name a couple) find some success against us. Hopefully Our Offense will be playing their A game in those situations.

Huh? Drones is talented but guy completed 58% of his passes last year

people really should go watch indiana against ohio state, michigan, etc ... carpenter wasn't the issue, he'll be fine in the acc ... starting to believe our dline is really like that
Save me a minute. How did Carpenter do against Ohio St and Mich ?

And they will get better over the course of the year. Safety is Guidry's specialty and he has a DB coach he actually enjoys working with now. That last part is editorialized, no inside scoop. But, come on, would any of us work with a guy who hasn't smiled in seven years?

D$ said he watched a lot of his tape and he held his own. I believe that. Sometimes it's just a slower adjustment for some guys. Honestly, Matt Lee got pushed around in the spring game last year (Gore got him twice) and look how he produced during the season? Lights out.

Just need him to be solid, not spectacular. Cooper, Francis and Rivers will take care of the spectacular.

Not surprised about Martinez and the tackling. It’s the first week of camp and we’ve had posters explain the psychology of tackling and how it’s a process preseason. Martinez is providing great process for them.

Also heard that Markeith Williams has 5 picks thru 4 practices.

I heard that too. I'm pretty sure the ITU guy, Chris Stock, reported it on his post-practice podcast yesterday. Just remember that Markeith is playing against Poff and Emory plus a young group of receivers primarily.

I'll raise my hand. And repeat that I don't want to rely on a freshman DT. If he beats out legitimately good options, then he earned that spot and awesome for us. But until I see Cook, Horton and Moten looking like quality ACC DTs, and then see Scott leapfrog them in the depth chart, I won't believe it was earned, just that those other guys weren't good enough. There's a difference.

It’s all there for the taking this year.

I know we’ve said that for 20 years, but we’ve never recruited classes back to back like this and added a proven elite quarterback before. It’s not all smoke and mirrors. We have proven good players at literally every single spot, most importantly the most critical position. Losing more than a game or MAYBE 2 is simply inexcusable.

There is NO REASON to not win the league this year. We just need to be neutral in coaching. Don’t get outcoached multiple times and this really should be a party in Charlotte in December.
