Ryan Mayes to Miami Bat Signal Confirm

Maybe we are about to get hammered by the NCAA so Golden is trying to get all the commits he can now before we get ****ed.

no offense to the guy but I think he has to be a DB take. I don't see how we would not offer Berrios at WR but offer this cat at WR. He's taller, very athletic...etc, I get it. But I think they like him at DB.

My take: Golden is going to extract every ounce of talent he can out of SoFla, and he probably doesn't see much difference between these "below the radar" guys...except for exposure. That problem is taken care of when he sees them at his camp. And the plus side...not having to deal with any bull****. So he will continue to recruit the Matt Thomases and Dalvin Cooks of the world, but will have no problem taking kids like this to make sure he doesn't have to rely on the higher profile kids from South Florida who are skewing more and more toward "diva".

Based solely on watching that 8 minute film, I'd say he looks more natural DB. He needs to learn how to tackle but I really like his ability to track receivers and hawk the ball.

Looks like a corner to me too. And potentially a damned good one. Turner and Mayes both look like the type of lanky, athletic corners that scouts drool over.

Better players according to who? Because clearly the staff has different opinions.

People really think they would offer a kid this early if they didn't think he was as good as a Lammons or Patten?

This.

A lot of people like to see those stars.

Well, we know that Golden and staff have told both of those players they are on top of their board. I think our staff has the right to recruit who they want at what position they want. They don't have to answer to anyone outside of that room. I'm just saying if he's going to take this kid and the kid from Dillard over those guys then they need to develop them into good players.

As for me, I watch as much film as I can on these kids and read a lot of evaluations. That doesn't make me an expert at all, but I at least like to be informed. I know I'm not coach Golden but I am entitled to my opinion on who I like and don't like. I trust Coach G, but we have to win and win big with these types of players before I trust the method. There is risk in taking any kid, but when you see a kid with NO offers that no one even knows about you have to at least question what's going on. Our defensive backfield for 2014 are all under the radar kids; that's perfectly fine if we can win with them.

Im not saying this kid isn't good but why wouldn't you slow play him a bit?

Kids like this will always commit on the spot.

You take a kid like this now that way you can focus all your energy on the elite kids left.

If there's an elite safety in the staff's mind (maybe Kiy Hester) then they can focus all their energy on him and lock up the kids that want to be Canes now. It's not like the staff is gonna turn away an elite kid because they have no spots left.

The camps are important as a collection of highlights isnt enough to fully evaluate a guy in many cases. Seeing these guys through all sorts of drills and getting to know them in person is real important. It looks like Al is scouring S Fla for guys before anyone else really gets to know them. He isnt waiting for Rivals he has his own agenda. All these guys seem to have the measurables to compete at the highest level. They really love the Canes and want to be at the U.

It's not like this was a kid who got thrown an offer in mid-January after 3 other corners decided to go elsewhere. You have to trust that your staff can evaluate the kids that show up to their camps and as mentioned South Florida is the kind of place where it's easy for talent to go under the radar this early in the process.

Plus, camps are huge for evaluating Cornerbacks. Most of those kids don't get challenged at all in HS games. Seeing how they compete, how they turn their hips and run, how they handle WRs that can match their talent level, how they bounce back when they're beat, etc is all crucial. It's easy to spot the Patrick Petersons, but the average corner prospect needs to be watched in a camp setting to be properly evaluated.

The thing with ESPN is they never update the offer lists or 40 times consistently. That 40 could have been from a combine his freshman year. I think he has an offer from Syracuse too. George McDonald seemed a little mad that his diamond in the rough was found by miami

Several points here:

1. Coach Field has coached at UM during up times here. He knows what UM-caliber players look like.

2. As Bytch Davis has said many times, the key to great recruiting is finding guys who aren't even close to their ceiling. When a dude shows up with no phone wearing a wife beater, it's probably safe to assume that his nutrition and strength training regimens are not world-class. Guys like this can be put in a great nutrition and weight program and get some top-level corching and turn into Ed Reed or Philip Buchanon.

3. Hungry tough head-nodders are what built this program. Entitled, unaccountable, roll-the-helmet-with-the-U-on-it-out-there-and-expect-the-other-team-to-quit guys are what ruined this program.

4. The Don learned his lesson last cycle. He isn't going to allow the pampered "show-me-more-love-or-I'll-pout" and "I'm going to wait till signing day and play a ***gy game with hats" guys to fvck him by the tail again. Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me.

Grade A post.

Something that is becoming very evident to me in Golden's tenure here. He doesn't make the same mistake twice and he's all about progression.
