QBS in the Portal as of 11/28

If the plan A doesn’t happen I think this would be a nice backup plan.

Good post Crib (even though now I'm getting the sense that we're already pretty far down the road with Mendoza 🙁)

But do you think we win the ACC and make the playoffs next year with a low ceiling, high floor game manager?

The ACC will suck yet again, but I'm not convinced our roster is that deep or that we're necessarily gonna kill it in the transfer portal (and we haven't even got to the matter of whether or not there will be defensive staff changes upgrades)
Imo Mateer is the guy until he’s not

My only question is if he’s so OU and has a deal in place why hasn’t he entered already? What’s the point of dragging it out? I mean he could enter and put a “ do not contact on” which is code for “leave me alone , I know where I’m going”.
allegedly waiting to play in the bowl game for Wazzu

Mendoza wasn’t my top guy but I’d be ok with it if he’s the choice. I like adults in the room at this position. Smart , mature guys who care. On top of that he has more talent than some here are giving him credit for. He moves well for 6’5 , has a good enough arm and is accurate. Plus he doesn’t turn the ball over. He also throws a nice back shoulder fade.

He’ll be surround him with a very good OL, skill guys and run game. He’s never has anything like this. Get him at a home town discount then go spend on the defense. If we’d had a guy like this two years ago versus a turnover machine at qb we likely win double figures and play for the Acc.
By now we all know that Mario needs a generationally talented QB to win double digit games (see Herbert and now Ward). If Mendoza ends up as our starter you can be guaranteed we will won't win more than 7-8 games next year and in reality likely less.

I think there are a lot of positives with Mendoza and he could be a good option, but at the same time it feels like it would be a huge risk taking him (even assuming an improved D next year) and I’m not sure we can afford to do that…I’m not sold just yet.

Looks like we’re gonna be waiting on our Plan A Qb for the 2nd year in a row…will lightning strike twice in the same spot, is the question

Imo we don’t need a generational talent to win the Acc and get to the playoff even with Mario. We need a good qb and a defense that isn’t absolute dumpster juice. The OL and skill guys here will make most qb’s look better than they are . We also need to get some stops. I’m glad we had Cam this year since the defense was so bad but you shouldn’t need that much qb to compete.

Do we outbid OU for a QB:

1) whose OC was just hired by the Sooners

2) grew up in the DFW exurbs, a 2.5-hour drive from Norman

3) plays in one of the two conferences that actually matters

Seems like a tough climb, especially since Venables knew how much he needs an answer at QB when he hired Ben Arbuckle from Wazzu to run his offense

you can do much worse than Mendoza at qb. This the safe and right guy imo. He’s productive and a great leader. Had cal in nearly every game, imagine him with Miami talent. Yeah no qb is not a cam ward in the portal this year but with what we have on O he doesn’t need to be tbh

I hope we get him honestly, upgrade over Emory
