OC Discussion Thread

Our fanbase was upset as **** when Jedd was hired, he had only Minnesota Oc experience ( that was less than stellar) and was just a position coach in the league. Majority of the fans ripped his resume to shreds and we know how that turned out .Come to find out Jedd was widely considered one of the smartest up and coming coaches around the league and lots of people were surprised he took the Mia job, to them he was too good for us.

The point is fans don't sit in the interviews listening to guys philosophies and their plan for running an offense . We just know a few names out of the thousands of coaches out there and most are normally unrealistic.

If Al is blown away by Lubbick or any other coach that's good enough for me, he knows far more than I do.

That's kinda how I feel with this; I don't really care who we hire because Golden has shown he knows how to find and hire assistants. UM runs a system now; this isn't Coker and Shannon who had none and depended on hiring a great OC to save their jobs. Golden will find a guy who is smart, prepared, and can run the pro-style offense that Golden has said he likes. But it's Golden's team, defense, and offense. The offense will be good as long as we have the talent and infrastructure in place to make sure that talent is disciplined and prepared. If he hires Lubick then Lubick is probably going to be very good. Golden knows he has a beastly offense coming back and a team that can win a ****load of games. He isn't going to waste this upcoming year on a bad OC. One guy who interests me is Shawn Watson, the Louisville OC. He's also a very experienced QB coach whose offense pounds the ball.

Great post. I agree on Watson, love that O. As well as Golden has said that this year's Offense was intentionally built to play in shootouts as he anticipaated our struggles on D. The better our D gets, the more I think we look like the ville's O.

disclaimer: I hate everything louisville and realize they cant sniff the canes left ********, but do like their offensive approach

I wouldn't completely hate the Lubick hire, after reading his resume.

I'd rather not have someone cut his teeth as OC here next season, but I wouldn't completely hate the move. Dude could definitely coach up the WRs. Has coached both WRs and DBs, and has been a key assistant at successful programs for the past 15 years. Passing game coordinator is pretty much heir-apparent to OC, I think. Wouldn't shock me to see him succeed somewhere.

The offensive philosophy is a reflection of what the HC wants to do, not the OC.I'm gonna side with QB coach being our TOP priorty because we've seen over the last 4 years the difference a team with a legit Qb can make.I would personally prefer to get back to the Air Coryell principles used by Chud and company.

Seriously though Larry, check out Bobby Wilder. I think you'd be impressed.

I know of Bobby Wilder...good coach...he'll be a HC in the FBS soon.

But I ride with Bob Stitt.

Quote from USA Today article:

Stitt says he'd be willing to move up as an offensive coordinator, but only if the head coach would give him total offensive control.

Isn't happening nor do I want that to happen.

A TON of successful schools give their OCs the ball and let'em run. You have a guy that has experience as a HC, and OC, he's a guy that can handle the load of running the offense.

You act like that means he puts a wall up...normal coaching staffs work together.

Well.....that might be true but Al doesn't seem like the type of coach to "drastically" change his offensive scheme for a couple years of a hot coordinator.

I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good hire, I'm not locked into a particular type of offensive system....dude seems pretty innovative. I just think we should be thinking more conventional offensive philosophy when discussing potential replacements.

I doesn't hurt to dream though.

I can't see Tedford here. I don't see him leaving the west coast area. He's comfortable over there.

What do you guys think about former Merryland HC/OC Raplh Fridgeden?

This dude is a great OC and teacher.

Agree.
As a Maryland grad, I've watched my share of Terp football.
He can coach and develop players.
But I wonder if he is ever going to coach again.
Fridge is tight with Frank Beamer, and never jumped at the OC
gig when it became open a few weeks ago.
Perhaps he has some health issues that we don't know about.
But if he ever wanted to coach again, and if it's at UM, I would be
ecstatic.
His only drawback is that he hates recruiting.
No problem. We've got other coaches who can do this.
Just let him concentrate on finding and developing QBs.

Fish's offense looked nothing like the offense Alshermond ran at Temple. I think Al will hire a guy who he thinks will fit in with the staff and can hang points on the board without turning the D soft. The only thing that scares me with this high-flying spread offenses is that the D usually suffers greatly. I'm a firm believer that when you practice against Air Raid style finesse offenses every day your D gets soft.

I'm confident in one thing--Al will take this opportunity to upgrade the OC position. I have no doubt.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has some health issues. He's pretty old too. Old and obese isn't a recipe for healthiness.

As for his disdain for recruiting, I've got no problem with that. Coordinators don't usually do a ton of recruiting anyway, and our staff is LOADED with recruiters.
