OC Discussion Thread

LOL @ people dismissing candidates because of lack of experience calling plays.

Someone remind me what Fisch's experience was calling plays outside of Minnesota, where he was responsible for one of the worst offenses on college football.

Doesn't every candidate have some sort of risk?

Not like we would be hiring facking Patrick Nix, Lubbick is highly regarded.

I dont think we necessarily need to find a guy with experience calling plays, but we do need to find a guy who has had experience and preferably success working with QBs at some level

Is this real life?

Jedd fisch was in the NFL for 4 years and did coach an offense for better or worse at Minnesota. That thing about the pros is pretty important especially when you lack OC experience.

Lubbick never coached in the NFL nor an entire offense.

But it is the same resume.

Im more concerned about our new OC having experience working with QBs than I am his experience or lack there of in the NFL or as a coordinator in college. There are always guys (Applewhite and Kingsbury being the two recent names who come to mind) who have had no previous experience as a college coordinator or NFL coach that have been able to successfully make the jump to a coordinator role in college. With the rest of the staff and offensive talent, Im less concerned about the transition about a guy being able to make that step from position coach to coordinator, but with our future at QB being potentially very bright, we need to make sure that its as bright as possible, and thats why in my opinion, we need to make sure we get a guy who can bring those young guys along and help then become the QBs they have the potential to be. id say thats more important to the long term success of the program.

Applewhite was OC at bama. Kingsbury was an OC as wel and in the NFL a coach. NFL experience is not a must it is just a nice thing when you lack real OC experience.

Obviously OCs arent born OCs but they dont have to have their growing pains at Miami.

Both guys had experience. I have no issues with raising an oc in your system like Harbaugh did at Stanford but I am not cool with hiring a coach with none like Lubbick. Could it work, sure but why take the risk.

We have a sick collection of talent on offense, we should get the right guy even if for one year.

Another thing about Lubick is he's a monster recruiter. Golden, Lubick, cristobal. ****.

We've got a staff full of recruiters though. I am leaning towards a guy that's a more experienced coach. If we can get both, great of course, but in this case I would prefer a "teacher" in regards to the debate we had before Cristobal was hired.

Agreed.

We need a serious Xs and Os dude.

I'm gonna break it down like this for you guys.

Last season we had a run pass ratio something like 45/55

No one in the top ten had anything less than 55/45

I never liked Fisch I think he cost us the games against UVA and UNC. I don't like the timing of his departure but as long as Golden brings in a guy that runs the ball more often it will be an improvement from last year's squad. I'd hand the reigns to Cristobal and call it a day and hire a new TEs Coach.

Morris doesn't need to be 30-45 for 400 and 3 TDs. He needs numbers closer to 22-28 for 300 yds and 3 TDs. Our team is less suited to pound the ball this season unless OT or AC or even Dillard can pound the ball effectively behind our big boys but, I never felt like we were gonna be back in business until we got away from throwing it 40 times a game.

Our fanbase was upset as **** when Jedd was hired, he had only Minnesota Oc experience ( that was less than stellar) and was just a position coach in the league. Majority of the fans ripped his resume to shreds and we know how that turned out .Come to find out Jedd was widely considered one of the smartest up and coming coaches around the league and lots of people were surprised he took the Mia job, to them he was too good for us.

The point is fans don't sit in the interviews listening to guys philosophies and their plan for running an offense . We just know a few names out of the thousands of coaches out there and most are normally unrealistic.

If Al is blown away by Lubbick or any other coach that's good enough for me, he knows far more than I do.

That's kinda how I feel with this; I don't really care who we hire because Golden has shown he knows how to find and hire assistants. UM runs a system now; this isn't Coker and Shannon who had none and depended on hiring a great OC to save their jobs. Golden will find a guy who is smart, prepared, and can run the pro-style offense that Golden has said he likes. But it's Golden's team, defense, and offense. The offense will be good as long as we have the talent and infrastructure in place to make sure that talent is disciplined and prepared. If he hires Lubick then Lubick is probably going to be very good. Golden knows he has a beastly offense coming back and a team that can win a ****load of games. He isn't going to waste this upcoming year on a bad OC. One guy who interests me is Shawn Watson, the Louisville OC. He's also a very experienced QB coach whose offense pounds the ball.

Kingsbury was never an NFL coach, he went from holding a clipboard in the CFL to a GA at Houston, to being co-OC with Sumlin and QBs coach. Applewhite went from being the QBs coach at Syracuse to having a great offense at Rice, which is exactly my point. A guy doesnt need to have NFL coaching experience, to be a successful college OC, and in the case of both of these guys, you can have success calling plays with little to no college coaching experience. Again, if Lubick were the choice, I wouldnt have a problem with him as an OC, the bigger problem for me would be the lack of an experienced QBs coach on the staff

This is fair and reasonable. Good stuff.

I'll throw a name out there... Bill lazor Qb/OC for Virginia

If we were playing the Miami hurricanes every week I'd sign off on this but sadly we can't play ourselves. We made this cat look like Bill freaking Walsh the last couple years.
