New commit

Anyone who only uses stars as their basis for a player's talent is being lazy. But anyone who dismisses stars as not important is being naive. The truth is that our coaches have NOT proven over their tenure that they can out scheme anyone OR develop lower rated kids into great players (like, say, a Virginia Tech). That means we need PREMIER talent to win. We aren't getting that and I don't feel confident in our staff to win with kids that aren't supremely gifted.

*Waits for someone to mention Denzel(who has played the same since he was a FR), Flowers(offered by big schools later), etc*

Even DP had offers from both uf and fsu.

I really don't care about ratings on an OL, they are usually the hardest to evaluate for the next level. With that said I like this kid.

So, I don't follow recruiting like most youse guysum, but am I supposed to be impressed that his other offers were BC, Akron, Elon, Old Dominion, and Villanova? So, one other BCS conference offer, one MAC offer and the rest I-AA offers. What are we doing? I know stars aren't everything, but I do look at who the other offers are from, and that's sad.
BC usually knows what they're doing when it comes to OL

Yeah, so one legit offer besides us......

Fire Alan Goldstein.

Northeast OL are where its at..and when it comes to the OL stars don't matter

Stars really don't matter at any position.I read about this commit elsewhere, I knew the message board whiners and complainers would be out in full force. The staff really likes this guy's potential. Other schools were starting to show interest, like Penn State.

I remember when a kid named Brad Kaaya had only 2 offers until what November, one from San Diego St. and the other from............ oh UM! But automatically the offers a kid has matters and the stars matter too! I remember when Travis Rudolph, Chad Thomas, Brad Kaaya, Alex Collins, Trayone Gray, Juwon Young, JC Jackson and so many others that I can't name off the top of my head were 3*s at this time and nobody here wanted them either

Did people react the same way they're reacting to this pickup? If the film looks good people won't **** about it. When people watched the tape on Collins, Rudolph, Gray etc. the talent was obvious. This isn't the same situation as those.

Jamaicancane give it up, film speaks for itself, this guy is light in weight and does not have good drive or strength or an exceptional first step off the ball. It was not hard to tell collins and thomas were beast from their film, like I said before, throw stars and offers out, film speaks for itself and this was a bad pick up period. At the end of the day, I just want to see UM succeed and I'm not confident this guy can be productive in a UM uniform.

If some of you people actually have a problem with the offer then how about leveling some criticism at Kehoe? You don't think he signed off on it? Oh, that's right. Alfred is from Jersey and that's next door to Pennsylvania....I'm just surprised that there's no way to criticize D'Onofrio here too.

Jesu Christo, some of you need to relax. Was last year's OL class not of any quality? This isn't a DL type of recruit where we're looking for contributions sooner rather than later.

I'm sure it's more than just Art who was in on this decision. I'm sure Al was, probably Coley, and maybe at least a few others, particularly the offensive coaches, including perhaps Hurlie and Brennan. These are probably collective decisions, particularly early offers.

Just looking at a picture of him elsewhere, I like the way he is put together, a lean 6'5", flat stomach, with the frame to add quite a few pounds of muscle.

A lot of big name OLs in HS are just big blobs who lean and push people. The key is making the evaluation of how the kid projects down the road.

Well, the coaches disagree with you (and you're entitled to your nonexpert opinion.) His coach says he is a "punishing run blocker" and "with a high football IQ." The coach (whose name, incidentally, is also Golden but not related) says "he will be one powerful kid at the next level."

Now this is his high school coach. Sometimes they will give you a puff job on a kid, sometimes they will be honest. He went on to say that the league he plays in is kind of the ivy league of the east coast and it takes time for the names to get out. He said the kid will still be pursued and expects him up to 290, 295 by August.

Take it for what it's worth. I haven't watched the video, because I know that the highlight videos are not always the full story, Sometimes you can watch a kid like Dalvin Cook explode for long run after long run, or Yearby making incredible moves highlight after highlight, and then you know. You can't always tell with an OL.

I really don't even have a dog in this fight, no opinion, since I defer to coaches on most decisions like this. I assume they know a lot more than most of the people here who watch a five minute highlight video and think they can make a firm conclusion.

.Here is a story from the philly blog on his commitment. I like the fact he has shut down his recruitment since his commitment but lets see how develops over his senior. An to answer the question why PSU didn't offer, well that's simple they got a commitment from the nations #7 OG Steven Gonzalez from New Jersey.

Malvern Prep’s Hayden Mahoney, a junior offensive lineman, committed* to play football for the University of Miami Saturday afternoon while on an unofficial visit to the school.

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound tackle arrived Friday in Coral Gables and spent about 20 minutes chatting with Hurricanes coach Al Golden.

"He’s so passionate about what he does," Mahoney said. "He was talking about wanting to win a national championship. I really bought into it."

The 17-year-old, who doubles as a defensive end for the Friars, also had scholarship offers from Akron, Boston College, Elon, Old Dominion, and Villanova. Connecticut, Northwestern, and Virginia were likewise interested.

"I talked it over Friday night with my mom [Teri]," Mahoney said. "We both were really impressed with what we saw, so I didn’t think there was any reason to hold off on my decision."

Also important, Mahoney said, was the strong relationship he has formed with Hurricanes offensive coordinator Art Kehoe. Kehoe, a Conshohocken native, is in his fourth season on Golden’s staff and his 30th overall at Miami.

Mahoney’s brother, Connor, starred at Malvern Prep and is now a sophomore defensive lineman at Northwestern. The 6-4, 260-pounder was an Inquirer first-team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection as a senior with the Friars.

"I talked things over with Connor," Hayden Mahoney said. "He told me that, ultimately, it was my decision to make."

As a result of his commitment to the Hurricanes, Hayden Mahoney said he has nixed plans for upcoming visits to Connecticut and Virginia.

Glad a bunch of you so called talent experts have other jobs. Most of you must of got your experience from Coker. Only offer 4/5 stars hoping they come. And when they dont get stuck with leftovers and your thumb up your a$$. This isnt 15 years ago when Miami was winning most of the time. Do I think Golden is the greatest coach...**** no...do I think he has made mistake...**** yes. Is he better than the previous 2 coaches...yes.

You sound really smart. How are you not on Sabans staff?

C'mon, man, you been around here long enough to know that the porster film evaluators know more than people who get paid to evaluate high school kids.

Welcome to DA U young man!!! This staff hasn't had problems with the offensive line coaching/recruiting. Its above my pay grade to evaluate a lineman going against guys much smaller than him. IMHO its much easier to evaluate the skill positions. Now if we landed an unknown 3 star DB from PA this early, I might question the staff. However, this dude is a big ugly from big ten country. I'm OK with that.
