My take on Jake Heaps

All this means is that Dorito Golden knows his schit don't stink and the heat is on ****!

Heaps is a disaster at QB. He was horrible at BYU although admittedly I didn't follow him much after that. As far as the "it" factor, he aint got it.

What happens if Heaps is actually playing decently when RW is healthy enough to play again? QB controversy for DAYS, that's what.

Does this also mean that GASP!!!!!! Baby Jesus actually.......isn't?

Dumbest statement of the day

Really? How many games have you watched him play? I've seen him at least 6 times myself. 2 times live. He sucks.

Thanks for chiming in with your uninformed opinion though. I'm sure someone somewhere is smarter for it.

Congrats on you whopping 6 games of info. He played his HS ball at Skyline HS in Sammamish, Washington. Thats about 4 hours from where I live. Trust me im MUCH more informed then you on prospects from the state of Washington and what they have been doing recently. Hes not that bad, and hes certainly not a downgrade from a redshirt freshman who hasnt played a game who, by all accounts isnt impressing and a true freshman who has never played. At worst he is a experienced backup if Olsen or Kaaya win it, at best he's a starter that lets us get a redshirt on one of those young QBs. Its low risk high reward.

This kid doesn't suck.

We complement him; he complements us.

Really could be a nice one-year fit. Which is exactly the function Williams was cemented to fill prior to his tear.

Then we let our more groomed QB of the future take the reigns for 3-4 years starting in 2015 (presumably Olsen or Kaaya). You may not agree with that strategy, but it's certainly a viable one.

I think CaneDynasty is related to Gray Crow, or he has a man crush on "baby jesus" Olsen.

You and me are more interested in Miami having the best quarterback possible and winning as many games as possible.

***** getting the young guys "ready." It's all about winning NOW. Win NOW and recruiting starts to pick up, and all the sudden this program is back a lot faster.

Getting Heaps was a coup for Golden, a huge win.

Wait, what???? You watching him play HS ball is better than watching him play at a higher level against better competition?

Would you like to revise that statement?

Im much more interested in athletes that come from Washington then probably anybody else here, and that includes Jake Heaps. I watched him play a ton in HS, watched more then 6 games of him at BYU and probably more games of him at Kansas then anybody other then that guy who gave the crazy breakdown.

Ill defer to you guys on south florida recruiting, but Washington? thats my ****

You gotta learn how to read man. i didnt say he was a great QB, i said he is a low risk move. You asked me how much ive seen and told you, its alot more then you. now you wanna ***** about it?

The only thing you have contibuted has been "i watched 6 games at BYU he sucks." You havent said why, you havent given any relevant reason, your just *****ing non stop.

He sucks because he is a bad QB. He doesn't have a great arm. He get's rattled in the pocket very easily.

He is short, get's balls batted down and can't see the whole field. Also has very poor ball handling.

Lacks mobility and has never had command or control of his teams. At BYU all the players hated him because he came in thinking his schit didn't stink. Lo and behold, it turns out his schit actually did have a foul odor. (source: Maybe it was because he wasn’t with the team as much during the off-season. It’s understandable that he missed time because of his marriage, but it didn’t sound right when players noted his repeated absence during winter workouts.......Things started to make more sense when Jake was benched in favor of Riley, who the whole team seemed to rally around. Perhaps it’s on the players for not fully sporting Jake anyway, but it was interesting to see how the players responded to a QB that played with all heart and less skill as opposed to one that relied solely on his talent.

He hasn't ever beaten anyone out that has challenged his position at any school since H.S. He has ran from every single challenging situation he has found himself in during his time in the NCAA.

He's a ******* fraud and there are some idiots around here that think it's all peaches and cream to take flyers on guys while under NCAA sanctions.

Our staff really has done a number on some of you guys. It's embarrassing.

Jake heaps is the Dorito Golden of QB's. He looks great against scrub *** competition but every time he has been asked to play someone decent he gets his lower intestines stretched out by a girthy *****.

Edit: I do think it's cute that you and he are high school sweethearts though.

You're embarrassing yourself, buddy.

If Heaps is so bad then kaaya or olsen will have no trouble beating him out for the starting job in the fall.

I'm only interested in the best quarterback winning the battle and Miami winning as many games as possible next year. May the best man win.

But get your facts straight. Heaps was the #1 QB recruit coming out of high school. His religion is mormon so he wanted to go to BYU. He had a great freshman year. His sophomore year, they changed offenses to a spread option, and that doesn't fit his skills. For that reason, he transferred to Kansas because he wanted to play under Charlie Weis, who has a reputation for being a good quarterbacks coach.

They didn't win a lot of games last year, so they fired their offensive coordinator and brought in a guy who, surprise, runs the spread option. Again, not Heaps' strong suit, so he decided to GTFO and transfer to Miami where he has a shot to be the guy in a pro style attack.

But like I said, if he sucks, he won't win the starting job.

I guess your narrative works if you completely ignore everything that I posted above. Well done.

ProTip: IF HEAPS WERE ANY GOOD THEY NEVER WOULD HAVE CHANGED OC's TO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT OFFENSE.

I wonder if back when Williams transferred to Miami, if the fans could have chosen Williams or Heaps, who would they have picked? Heaps played at a terrible school, for a terrible college head coach. Kansas even had another former 5 star the year before Heaps, who was chewed up and spit out by Weis. And people are blaming horrible development on Golden and co.? Had Williams not have torn his ACL we'd not be in this mess. We have 1yr playing experience at the QB position beyond Williams. And 3yrs worth of experience being on a college football team. As far as I know, the kid is not burning a sholly. This is a former 5 star who broke freshman records at school who had the former NCAA leader in career passing yards. and Heaps didn't even play in the West Coast offense Detmer did. Maybe if we look past the fact he played for Kansas, we might be able to see that this could be a homerun move.

I agree with adding Heaps of **** but it shows how bad Golden qb recruiting has been.

That's a dumb statement. In 3 real recruiting classes he has brought in 2 top 10 qbs.

Actually the statement is valid. Al has 3 full classes and he is bringing in a one and done QB. It is a fairly clear statement he has no confidence in his own QB recruiting.

The more homework I do on this kid, the more I see this as a potentially exciting move. Potentially; but, legitimately.

The good news is Heaps is a former five-star recruit, rated the #1 pro-style QB coming out of high school in the 2010 class. He broke records at BYU as a freshman. In the last two months of his freshman year, Heaps threw 13 touchdowns and two interceptions and passed for 1,259 yards.

I like a lot of what I've seen from this kid's tape. Go dig some up. Kansas was painfully bad last year. Painfully. But Heaps played some good ball despite being surrounded by a bunch of Larry, Moe, and Curlies. Not great, but good, and that all seemed in spite of the rest of the Kansas offense.

The bad news is that he's tested out (but not in the good way) of two schools. Who knows what happened at BYU? There are reports, clung to by Cane Dynasty, that he lost the team while being absent from practices.

The Kansas failure is a little easier to understand and a lot less scary. He played pretty well, despite being on and off the bench...under Charlie Weis...at Kansas. And then they moved to a spread offense, which is clearly not Heaps' forte.

He doesn't have great measurables, standing at about 6' 1" and immobile.

Good news is that we run a system that is conducive to his strengths. Which appear to be that he can distribute the ball nicely and quickly and accurately.

There are Kyle Wright comparisons to be made here. #1 pro-style recruit who fizzled and failed. Some here like to give Wright some credit, acknowledging multiple OCs, a weak OLine, inferior surrounding talent, and confidence killers (having Kirby Freeman take any snaps over you would mind **** anybody...). Maybe, just maybe, Heaps has suffered some of the same misfortunes.

Maybe we're the right system at the right place at the right time for Jake Heaps, and for us.

The bottom line is: Heaps can "manage the game" just like Williams was planned to do. Except I think Heaps has a stronger arm and a higher ceiling. So we have a Williams-equivalent, with bonus potential, to lead us through 2014. There was never a plan to break in Olsen/Kaaya this year anyway.

So we use Heaps as a stop-gap for a 2014 team that a) looks like it has the pieces to compete for the ACC and b) Golden needs to compete for the ACC.

If he falters in practice, he can ride the pine. But I think the scholarship is worth the gamble, and we'll figure things out for sure toward the beginning of fall camp.

Only an idiot would see us bringing in this guy as a good thing.

He's been schit everywhere he's been and tucks his tail at the first sign of trouble.

We would be much better off saving the scholly and letting one of the youngins' get their cherry popped.

9 scholly's 3 years. That should be our priority.

Honestly we need to take that scholarship away from Gray Crow.
But since that won't happen, I actually hope this year we redshirt Kaaya if he is behind Olsen by the start of the year, because I think once RW gets healthy he will start. So having RW, Heaps, and Olsen ahead of Kaaya, there would be no reason not to redshirt him.

Figuring out the QB situation is far more important then worrying about the scholarships. What if Crow leaves? Then your entire argument will be out the window lol

Heaps leaves BYU:

BYU quarterback Jake Heaps has decided to transfer immediately in search of a fresh start, following a season in which he lost his starting job.

"Jake is a great young man with tremendous potential and someone I deeply care about," coach Bronco Mendenhall said Monday in a statement. "I am sorry to see him leave this wonderful institution yet anxious to follow his future development and success."

Heaps came to BYU as a highly touted recruit, and enrolled in the spring 2010 semester to get a leg up on the quarterback competition. As a true freshman last season, Heaps and Riley Nelson shared quarterback duties until Nelson was lost for the year with a shoulder injury. Heaps endured his share of struggles, but closed the year with a terrific performance in the New Mexico Bowl, going 25-of-34 for 264 yards and four touchdowns.

BYU went into this season with Heaps firmly entrenched as the starter, and high hopes with Brandon Doman taking over as offensive coordinator. But Heaps struggled from the start, throwing three touchdown passes and five interceptions in his first five starts of the season. He had three turnovers in an embarrassing 54-10 loss to in-state rival Utah.

With the Cougars trailing Utah State in Week 5, Heaps was benched in favor of Nelson. The backup quarterback sparked a comeback win and replaced Heaps as the starter.

Heaps started two more games after Nelson got hurt, but it was clear that it was Nelson who would be the starting quarterback heading into 2012. Nelson, a junior, has one season remaining, while Heaps has two.

For his BYU career, Heaps completed 363 of 635 passes for 3,768 yards, 24 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Heaps has not announced where he will transfer. He will not participate in the bowl game or bowl practices and will concentrate on finishing out his schoolwork in the fall semester.

Im glad kaaya can be redshirted now..but this kid ain't beating out baby jesus, hes gonna shock a bunch of people and I have full confidence in him

You really don't know much about football, do you. One pocket-style passer with a terrible offensive line and receivers who can't catch isn't going to win games by himself. Joe Montana couldn't win at Kansas.
