My take on Jake Heaps

Heaps leaves BYU:

BYU quarterback Jake Heaps has decided to transfer immediately in search of a fresh start, following a season in which he lost his starting job.

"Jake is a great young man with tremendous potential and someone I deeply care about," coach Bronco Mendenhall said Monday in a statement. "I am sorry to see him leave this wonderful institution yet anxious to follow his future development and success."

Heaps came to BYU as a highly touted recruit, and enrolled in the spring 2010 semester to get a leg up on the quarterback competition. As a true freshman last season, Heaps and Riley Nelson shared quarterback duties until Nelson was lost for the year with a shoulder injury. Heaps endured his share of struggles, but closed the year with a terrific performance in the New Mexico Bowl, going 25-of-34 for 264 yards and four touchdowns.

BYU went into this season with Heaps firmly entrenched as the starter, and high hopes with Brandon Doman taking over as offensive coordinator. But Heaps struggled from the start, throwing three touchdown passes and five interceptions in his first five starts of the season. He had three turnovers in an embarrassing 54-10 loss to in-state rival Utah.

With the Cougars trailing Utah State in Week 5, Heaps was benched in favor of Nelson. The backup quarterback sparked a comeback win and replaced Heaps as the starter.

Heaps started two more games after Nelson got hurt, but it was clear that it was Nelson who would be the starting quarterback heading into 2012. Nelson, a junior, has one season remaining, while Heaps has two.

For his BYU career, Heaps completed 363 of 635 passes for 3,768 yards, 24 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Heaps has not announced where he will transfer. He will not participate in the bowl game or bowl practices and will concentrate on finishing out his schoolwork in the fall semester.

Yep and why did he transfer? Because they went to a spread attack under the new OC.

No, that was at Kansas.

This. For all the idiots in the peanut gallery. This ^^^^

Good QB's make bad teams decent. He's never done that once in his life.

He took a decent BYU team and made them horrible. Then took a crappy KU team and kept them crappy.

Some folks here are delusional.

former 5 star recruit great pick up everything happens for a reason im ready for a national championship and for underdogs to succeed

That's all fine and good but the delusion around here regarding 2-9 career record as a starter Ryan Williams is almost as bad. I think you're taking issue with some peolle just realizing that the bar wasn't set that high to begin with in relation to the veteran QB role. Best case scenario disirregardless is that Heaps and Williams never see the field this year in anything but mop-up duty as Olsen or Kaaya wins the job and keeps it.

I agree with that.

The fact remains that our chances for success this season are far greater with a healthy RW than with any other QB on the roster.

If the tools are similar then experience in the system and chemistry with teammates and coaches trumps everything else.

If Olsen was indeed the savior and Kaaya and Rosier were more seasoned dude would not be here. Face it, no matter how much he have sucked at KU or BYU the coaches still think he's a better option than the guys we already have. After watching that spring game anyone thinking we would win ten games with Olsen should slap yourself or with two freshmen quarterbacks slap yourself twice.

This. So many posters have been expecting Olsen to magically get it together before the fall, or wishing upon a star that a true freshman will be able to walk in and manage our pro style offense into double digit wins. It's borderline delusional.

Heap may turn out to be awful. But given our inexperience at QB -- especially with how inconsistent Olsen has been -- it is a no brainer to give him a shot to win the job for a season.

Everyone understands the scholarship reduction issue, and the desire to put that behind us as quickly as possible. But QB is the single most important position on the field. Handing out a 1-year scholarship to an experienced pro style QB (regardless of whether he has lived up to expectations) is by far the lesser of two evils, as compared to not getting one of the scholarship reductions behind us.

i like this guys highlights, if he can hit open receivers, go through progressions, make the right decisions, and make plays off broken down situations he should do well here...I think he starts just based off the quality of plays he has made against major D1 comp

The way I look at it is this. We have a great run blocking offensive line with one of the best RB in the nation and a power back (Edwards) and speedy back (Yearby) behind him. Pound the ball with all of them! Use play action and the short passing game to protect the offensive line a bit. We need a QB this year who can manage an offense and get the football to the receivers on short to medium routes. With how athletic our receivers are, we need to get them the ball as quickly as possible and let them do their thing in the open field. I think Heaps can do this exact thing. He's played in more college football games then all of current QB's combined. Last year at Kansas his receivers dropped almost 50 passes and he was sacked almost 30 times. With our offensive talent, I think Heaps can succeed here. Next year, let Olsen(RS So), Kaaya(RS FR) and Rosier(RS FR) battle it out for the starting QB job because I don't believe any of them will be ready this year. That battle will give us our QB for the next 2-4 years.

Getting this kid could literally be the difference in winning 2-4 more games this year and people are complaining about him.

The university once known as Quarterback U hasn’t had one drafted before the seventh round in 22 years. And now, less than three months from the opener at Louisville, UM is welcoming a quarterback, Jake Heaps, who lost his starting job for a 3-9 Kansas team and finished 126th of 127 major college football qualifiers in completion percentage last season.

What in the name of Brock Berlin is going on here?

UM’s decision to bring aboard Heaps --- who is eligible immediately --- and allow him to compete with Kevin Olsen and incoming long shots Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier for the starting job --- might seem desperate, but there is reasoning behind it.

Though Olsen could still win the job, there were serious concerns internally about automatically handing the position to him in the wake of Ryan Williams’ knee injury.

One UM official, after Williams’ injury during spring ball, admitted he was very worried. Heaps, while erratic throughout his career, is by far the most experienced option for the difficult season opener.

There’s no question about Olsen’s arm and raw talent. But several concerns have been voiced privately. Among them: Olsen needs to be more receptive to coaching, polish his mechanics (which contributed to his dismal 7 for 21 showing in the spring game), stop throwing into double coverage and not force the home-run ball when it’s not there. In other words, don’t be afraid to take what the defense gives him.

He must be studious about film work (he has improved somewhat in that area) and gain a complete grasp of the offense. Olsen was stumped when asked several questions by the offensive coaching staff during a meeting late in spring practice. One UM source said the impression is that he works harder when his brother Greg, the Carolina Panthers tight end, is in town.

UM has been trying to figure out what buttons to push, so that Olsen is motivated to work maniacally, instead of feeling entitled to the job with Williams out. Bringing in Heaps, who has one year of eligibility, solves that issue.

Here’s the good news on Heaps: He was rated Rivals.com’s No. 1 pro-style quarterback in 2010, set freshman passing records at BYU, has a strong arm, is intelligent and has 28 games of starting experience, combined, at BYU and Kansas. He has 32 TDs and 27 INTs in his career.

The bad news: ESPN’s quarterback rating system ranked him 122nd in 2013, sixth-worst among all FBS starters. His 49 percent completion rating was abysmal, though mitigated somewhat by 48 drops by Kansas receivers (not all thrown by Heaps). He twice left schools after being beaten out, at BYU after 2011 and Kansas this year.

Williams’ mother said Williams hopes to return for the fourth game, Sept. 20 at Nebraska, but UM has no idea if that will happen. So Heaps is an insurance policy, as one UM official termed it.

Heaps said he visited UM a month-and-a-half ago and has been studying the UM playbook for a while.

“This has been definitely been in the works for a while now,” Heaps, who's married and a devout Mormon, told our Manny Navarro. “If they didn't think I could bring anything to the program, this wouldn't have happened. All I wanted was a strong opportunity to compete.”

Adding Heaps also could allow UM to potentially redshirt Kaaya and Rosier, which could be of benefit down the road.

He's a stopgap. Play him until Williams is ready and be shirt Kayaa. What this really is is a clear indictment of Olsen.
