My Stance on Mario

Wasnt a bad decision. Was just questionable to me. Had we lost that game, the mood here would be highly different. But i digress.
After some early ups and downs, this has become a good discussion. Thank you for starting it.

I don’t care how slurper you want to get, There is ZERO excuse for Mario Cristobal to have a definitively worse class than Mike Norvell and Billy Napier. None. Zero. Zilch.

You may have a point with Napier, but FSU is having a good season and throwing around more money than we are. I would think it'd be expected for them to recruit better than us. Rather than deal with the headwinds that Mario is recruiting under, they are cruising along with a tailwind at their backs.

Again, we are 20th in average recruit and with a class currently filled with 24 kids compared to schools “below us” like Texas (17), they’re almost assuredly going to pass us. The average recruit ranking is what I pay attention to the most.

You say we’re seeing the development in front of our eyes…you cannot be blindsided by recency bias. If we had lost to Clemson, the tune would be veryyyy different on here. Imagine if Guidry and Dawson had BETTER PLAYERS AND BETTER TALENT to work with. You don’t think we’d be a top 10 program sooner rather than later?

Luckily, WR has talent coming in. CB? Nah. DT? Nah. Linebacker? People’s feathers will be ruffled so I’ll stay out of that. QB? Pfft. We need more Bains and Mauigoa’s, and less Russell’s and Thomas’s and Dylan Days.

You mentioned portal. Norvell eats our lunch in the portal, heck he eats everyone’s. Ok…what’s the best way to grab elite portal talent? Money. Have we landed a stud, top transfer from the portal that wasn’t an OL? Deen was 95th, Kiko was 45th…our OL that won us the game on Saturday, we paid for those dudes and in turn, it’s brought us two wins imo (A&M as well). Kiko was a package deal, Deen has been very good but not elite.

We need elite talent ready to contribute. We’re not going to outbid everyone in the portal, it’s just not going to happen. You need to recruit high school better than **** near everyone, especially in-state. You’ll never convince me that being 3rd in the state is fine. That’s beta ****.

I see three, maybe four players in this class that can impact this roster next season. We need more. We have everything to sell right now, even winning on the field.

Throw the short passes he threw all game to Brashard or Ray Ray and let your playmakers with speed try to get you into field goal range. That’s debatable though.

Regardless, and what isn’t debatable, is if Mario’s going to run out the clock - after the GT debacle - you take the knee. The MariBro’s have zero justification for defending this and ignoring it under the guise of “we won” doesn’t change the reality that this guy’s not very smart and is really an awful game coRch. Awful.
Yes 100% Yes!!! Great observation! With about 1:26 left on the clock when the Canes got the ball back in the 4th Qtr it puzzled me that a fair catch was called with all the open space that was available. So right off the bat they decided overtime ok cool. But then if they wanted to go to overtime then taking the Knee 3 times should have been the move because with only two timeouts if done correctly the time would have expired without the possibility of a fumble/turnover which is supposedly what they wanted to avoid with Emory passing and running 2 minute drill.

I don’t see it in this OL class but I’ll assume he’ll develop what he gets. There’s no Anez Coopers and Kinslers in this group. WR and DE are good. We have a good Safety and HBack. Then there’s a massive drop off in talent. The per recruit average ranking matters.
Evaluations matter more, especially with a class like this.

The way this class is evolving, it's value will be determined by how well the bottom half is rather than the top half. And we won't know for a couple of years. I hope Alonzo is spot on with the evaluations.
It’s at 20th. We’ll see how we finish. I literally just wish ESD was here so there would be some parameters in place to look at things.

To think of someone as less of a person because of their parents is pretty beta of you. I’m sure there’s people here that actually don’t know their father.

But wouldn’t expect anything other than an emotional response from you because you have nothing else to say other than to deflect that your Super Corch isn’t living up to the expectations on the trail. You revert to insults because you can’t argue against the numbers.

The incessant defending of Saint Cristobal is a weird fetish on here. He can do no wrong.

carry on, child.
i can't take someone seriously if they are *****ing about recruiting . We had an all time class last year when u include portal and guys like bain who were wayyyy better then people thought. This year AT WORST we will have a top 10 class. Who cares what UF and FSU do as long as we do it well too. And UF should recruit well they have no talent right now .

Yeah, I have to let it go on OL until they show otherwise. I don’t see it this year but their track record and position group at OL is great. I don’t get how they don’t have more coming in for 24. There has to be a money component. It makes no sense otherwise.
I kind of sensed as the summer was starting that last year's class scared many OL off. At that point, I expected more developmental types. DT and CB is a different story.

I don't doubt we’re getting beat with $ at DT but when we’ve apparently been the high bidder at DT we’ve also gotten beat. I think Blount wants to go to FSU and we were used to up the offer. We really need to score there in the portal.
Agree

I believe DT required more substance from us this year. We went hard nationally and the negative recruiting coupled with

Chicago
Dallas
Oregon
Daytona
Northern Mississippi

And Blount NEVER wanted to come here coupled with the bag shown.

It is what it is.

I'm convinced at this point with enough evidence against quality teams we will field competent lines. Our DL goes against the OL everyday. Their level of play has to get better.

We need to roll into FSU 7-2.

FSU managed 22 rushing yards against Clemson and Clemson knew we were rushing....I hate the transitive property but that I'd very interesting

Recruiting is what matters in this program, and that is the primary criteria upon which the judge the HC and ataff.

If our true Freshman QB turns that ball over and Clemson scores to win the game (they had two timeouts left; we only had one), we would have sent SWAT over to Mario's house after the game. ****, I'd go over there myself. He made the right decision. We had the better lines and kicker. Shortening the field for our TF QB was smart. And it worked out.
I get that counter-point and honestly, there's probably no right or wrong answer here.

But I think the vast majority of people (analytics included) would say you go for the FG to win it. If we turn the ball over and lose because of it, you're definitely going to get a ton of criticism. But it's normally the right call.

However, if you lose the game in OT because you didn't push for a game-winning FG then I think the pitchforks are out even more. You had a chance to win the game after your QB was beginning to throw the ball a little better and only needed to pick up 30ish yards with a timeout in hand. And you have one of CFB's best kickers at your disposal.

Again, there's no right-wrong answer here outside of the fact that we won. But we know the narrative on Mario's game day chops and this was just another interesting one.

That's a fair take.

I was gonna post this even before Clemson but decided against it as i knew it was only gonna ignite more intense arguments on a 2 game losing streak. Winning v Clemson didnt change it, nor would it have if we lost.

When Mario came in i decided i was gonna allow man to bring in 3 full recruiting classes. So that means when '23 class are 3rd year players. That means im gonna live through asking myself almost once a day, why we didn't kneel the ball v GT, and what tf is up with these random timeouts when it seems we have the upper hand. Playing for overtime when we have Clemson on the ropes. I decided i will live through these things. I figured Manny, Shannon and Golden were not up to the challenge at various points and they never would be. I hear fans talk about some of the mind boggling things Butch did that made fans get on his bum on gameday. Mario Cristobal seems to be almost solely driven by analytics and it seems that leads to some of the questionable game day decisions. I have to not only live with that but expect it. Its part of our team now, its gonna happen.

Lincoln Riley and Kiffin are probably the two most genius coaches and anytime they get into meaningful games on the national stage, they dont even show up. Riley get punked by bro style king Wittingham at Utah back to back and Kiffin getting put his place by one of Saban's worse teams.

Magic coaching not gonna fix us and i like the coordinators we have, even the assistant coaches.

Unless recruiting totally implodes or we just start getting smoke Al Golden and Manny style. Ima strap in. The older i get the more i put things into perspective and see the value of hindsight.

No one game, recruit or one event gonna change my stance on that. I see things i like and things i dont like. I like the overall direction.
FIFY...

yeah, i think there are compelling arguments in either direction for the specific circumstance we were in. but the fact that that's the case takes it *out* of the category of mario's gameday gaffes, imo. he made a decision in a situation where either would've been defensible, and it happened to work out for us this time.

Emory throwing into an 8 man zone is asking for an INT. Clemson has been dogsh!t bad in the red zone and kicking field goals so you don't risk a turnover when you can put the kid in scoring position and your D has been stopping Clemson. The End!
I think everyone missed a huge reason why we played for OT. We lost Chaney at the end of the 4th. He is critical in our pass blocking. They simply do not trust 28 as a blocker (See UNC game). They were worried about 28 getting beat for a strip sack. We can dog Mario for rest of year about GT debacle. But this decision was not even in the same realm as that one and depending on perspective was actually the right decision.

Amen. Also, by the end of the 4th Emory was showing no tendencies of being careless with the ball. He made two really bad throws in the game, one was (I believe) a curl route where Emory just totally misfired and the other was the pick where the receiver broke the route as Emory released the ball. Both were in the first half.

Emory was seeing the field and defense well and making good decisions in the second half.

Edit: the really confounding thing about Mario is that he generally coaches conservatively but then does things like running against GT rather than take a knee because tuff and fysical. Hard to reconcile in my mind.

My opinion at this time is that starting in 2025, we'll have the talent to be 12-0 but Mario's gameday decisions will keep us at 10-2 or 11-1.

And on those Saturdays, we'll all be ****ed off, but compare that to the last 15 years......

Mario this year has beaten Fisher AND Dabo - two of our biggest nemesis. i think we can beat FSU. Do THAT and GT will be forgotten in my book
