My Stance on Mario

My stance on Mario is he's getting his time and we'll see what happens.

Being in or out on someone at this point seems silly when they are going to be here for a while. His first year and a half...been some good and some bad...this could still go either way. The issues Mario came home with are still here, but what intrigues us about Mario is happening.

We just beat Clemson...I've waited for over a decade for that to happen...I don't care if Clemson is kind of cheeks...monster win. Progress isn't always clean and linear, but we are going to have a nice year-over-year win total improvement this year from last with two big wins. Mario tends to do well in Bowl Games, too. This year with this record we'll always look at with a what-if after that Georgia Tech loss because we'll all be able to easily say we were one win better than the final.

If we finish 8-4, we'll always *9-3 that in our heads and going from 5 to 8 or 9 wins is a big improvement for any coach. Not S-Tier, but safely A-Tier improvement year-over-year so far.

I was gonna post this even before Clemson but decided against it as i knew it was only gonna ignite more intense arguments on a 2 game losing streak. Winning v Clemson didnt change it, nor would it have if we lost.

When Mario came in i decided i was gonna allow man to bring in 3 full recruiting classes. So that means when '23 class are 3rd year players. That means im gonna live through asking myself almost once a day, why we didn't kneel the ball v GT, and what tf is up with these random timeouts when it seems we have the upper hand. Playing for overtime when we have Clemson on the ropes. I decided i will live through these things. I figured Manny, Shannon and Golden were not up to the challenge at various points and they never would be. I hear fans talk about some of the mind boggling things Butch did that made fans get on his bum on gameday. Mario Cristobal seems to be almost solely driven by analytics and it seems that leads to some of the questionable game day decisions. I have to not only live with that but expect it. Its part of our team now, its gonna happen.

Lincoln Riley and Kiffin are probably the two most genius coaches and anytime they get into meaningful games on the national stage, they dont even show up. Riley get punked by bro style king Wittingham at Utah back to back and Kiffin getting put his place by one of Saban's worse teams.

Magic coaching not gonna fix us and i like the coordinators we have, even the assistant coaches.

Unless recruiting totally implodes or we just start getting smoke Al Golden and Manny style. Ima strap in. The older i get the more i put things into perspective and see the value of hindsight.

No one game or one event gonna change my stance on that. I see things i like and things i dont like. I like the overall direction.

About 80 million reasons why "strapping in" is the best way you can put riding with Mario.

I feel Mario is the best coach for Miami. He burnt goodwill by hiring the wrong coaches last season, he isn't a good game day coach, needs to stay out of his new coordinators' way, and is stubborn AF. And he's struggling more in recruiting this class than I expected. But the guy is relentless at program building, culture building, recruiting. And in his second year, he has built offensive and defensive lines that are better than we've seen in a long time, possibly ever on offense. That is the right foundation for greatness.

He's only the 14th highest paid coach. So I'm not sure his salary is relevant any more. He could have made as much at Oregon.

Money only relevant to the people paying it. That is a hefty sum no matter how you slice it though.

All I know is choosing overtime and keeping Emory on a short field with the D dominating the game along with the final timeout before the sack that ended the game. I consider that pretty good coaching.

a lot of so called fans love to pile on Mario when players fail to execute or make game day mistakes.

the no quit mentality along with the tenacity and fail to lose attitude against Clemson showed big time. Oh yea and throw in the goal line stance along with the most dominant freshman In decades Obviously something is being steered in the right direction.

if Mario wouldve handled that last drive in regulation with a healthy TVD the way he did, it would've been coaching malpractice

But with a true freshman QB making his first start?

It was prudent in my view...

The gameday stuff I can live with as long as we’re the top team talent-wise in the state (recruiting, which eventually leads to roster), and top 10 nationally. Even a gameday corch like Mario will win 9+ games if we have a top 10 roster in college football.

We’re currently a clear-cut third in the state (recruiting), and trending outside the top 12-13 nationally. 20th!!! in average rating per recruit.

Inexcusable on that front. If it’s a money issue, fix it. That’s my main gripe.

You’ve got 2 months Mario. Way too many JAGS in this class that need to be sent elsewhere, but if you can’t bring in better talent (which uhh…was why he was brought to Miami in the first place…), then you better hope these kids are developed.

Yep. Failures at QB, DL, and CB mean the talent is never going to be good enough to overcome Mario’s coaching.

Imagine us bunching the box with Judd Anderson at QB in a few years. It’s going to be bad.

I wonder what the strategy is for building this class. RB, WR and the DL all have blue chippers committed. Obviously the DL is lacking as opposed to what we were all sold, but Lightfoot, Pickens and Jones are all good recruits.

Are they intentionally taking “developmental” guys at other positions? I’m not a big fan of the secondary class. It feels like a class that has big name local guys, but lacks the top end talent needed to succeed. QB worries me. We can tout the portal all day long but we said the stuff last season about the DL. I’m cool with the OL being developmental guys. Mario & Mirabal have shown they can develop but the other positions are just too weak for my liking. And the DL needs more quality talent. Especially on the inside.

I just wonder if this by design outside of the big DL whiffs. Maybe they flip a guy late and saves the DL class, maybe Robinson flips and the DB class becomes a lot better. It just seems like we weren’t in on a ton of big time recruits, again outside of the DL and some TEs and Norland.

A lot of people were clamoring for better play on both sides of the trenches before he got here. In a year and a half worth of games there is noticeable improvement. I personally got way too into my feelings after the GT game, but two weeks later I can see a path to some degree of success with Mario as HC.

I listened to Late Kick on Sunday and Pate made a good point about Ryan Day and him adapting from pure offense to playing better defense/being more physical as the team identity. Coaches who can adapt change who they are tend to be more successful. The counterpoint, is why USC/Lincoln Riley continue to struggle with the same teams.

Mario changing his offensive philosophy to a degree leads me to believe he isn’t as robotic or archaic as some may have thought he is. Does that mean he’s going to be successful? Absolutely not, but it shows a willingness to change to be successful. If Mario recruits like he’s shown he can, success should be expected to follow him and if it doesn’t then questions about his job status will become more and more warranted. But right now it’s a still a bit premature.

Throw the short passes he threw all game to Brashard or Ray Ray and let your playmakers with speed try to get you into field goal range. That’s debatable though.

Regardless, and what isn’t debatable, is if Mario’s going to run out the clock - after the GT debacle - you take the knee. The MariBro’s have zero justification for defending this and ignoring it under the guise of “we won” doesn’t change the reality that this guy’s not very smart and is really an awful game coRch. Awful.

It may also be a bit schizophrenic. Against GT, he wants to be aggressive and continue pounding the rock with the game in hand (needing literally 0 points to win). Then, against Clemson, with the game tied and very much still in the balance, he drains clock and leaves a timeout on the board to conservatively play for OT (but, still, he doesn’t kneel).

I’ve come to the realization that the 5-7 season hurt us in the worst way. Pair that with not paying top dollar (even last year we did not have biggest deals on table for multiple players that signed).

Now you add in the fact that collectives have had a year or two to “catch up” as Ruiz gave em the blueprint, and you get what we have.

That’s cool, go win. You wanna flip this **** upside down? Go beat the Noles in 3 weeks.

Curious to see the narrative on Southern Cal after Riley's third class, as well.

Dude shot out the cannon with his office, Williams and reeling in Addison and others out of the portal.

A year and a half in he's lost to Utah three times as his team lacks toughness—and Notre Dame even blew them out two weeks ago, while Arizona took them to three overtimes and Colorado almost came back from being down 41-14.

Washington, Oregon and UCLA look. Dude could very easily end this season 7-5 at worst and 8-4 at best—after he got sucked off for 11-3 last year.

His "genius" won't bode well in the Big Ten if he doesn't take playing defense seriously (a la Pete Carroll) and doesn't put a precedent on a built-tough running game.
My bet is he bails and goes wherever Williams is drafted. He has no chance in b10 as they have no defense.
Sc will lose to Washington and Oregon and ucla is coin toss

If the OL is elite more often than not and if they don't run a Big Ten Iowa type offense then the Mario regime will be fine in the long run, the brand and location advantage will take care of the rest.

The impact guys I see are fortunately at some of the key positions.

Lightfoot will join Wayne, both push for Kelly’s spot next season; this is also under the assumption that Mesidor doesn’t return. I’m assuming Restrepo comes back, but Carr’s speed will find him on the field sooner rather than later. I think he’s our best WR prospect. Not exactly sure how the RB room will shake out with Parrish, Allen, Chaney, Fletcher, Citizen, CJ (someone will assuredly transfer, maybe two)…but Riley is talented enough to push for snaps. Praying we hold onto him. Patterson could very well slide into the two deep at safety.

Artavius Jones (if we can hold on), Pruitt and Trader are in that next tier that probably need some acclimation, but they’re naturally gifted enough that if it clicks early, it can equate to immediate success. The rest? There’s some fine prospects, and a lot that are filler/should wind up at lower P5’s/G5’s imo.

CB is in the worst shape, then DT, then safety imo. I was hoping those first two would be in better shape.

Portal is just tough because you don’t quite know what’s coming. Heck Keon Coleman came in last minute and might have been the most instrumental add of the entire off-season. It’s hard to “rely” on the portal; in a perfect world, you build your foundation through high school, and you Cherry pick 10-12 guys that improve your starting lineup or greatly enhance your two deep. I do agree with the coordinator changes (particularly on offense), as it does indicate Mario isn’t hellbent on a specific type of style. Also have to give credit for the rest of the staff being replaced, but allegedly it was because they were lazy on the trail.

And yet, the results don’t quite match last year’s.
