My Stance on Mario

That's like starting a fire and wanting credit for putting it out. This isn't Mario's first job. He is supposed to be a seasoned head coach. Having to replace the majority of your staff after the first year is a huge red flag.

Edit: I do like the new defensive coordinator.

Mario changing his offensive philosophy to a degree leads me to believe he isn’t as robotic or archaic as some may have thought he is. Does that mean he’s going to be successful? Absolutely not, but it shows a willingness to change to be successful. If Mario recruits like he’s shown he can, success should be expected to follow him and if it doesn’t then questions about his job status will become more and more warranted. But right now it’s a still a bit premature.

But did he change?

The knock on Mario’s offenses, outside of his failure at QB recruiting, was they weren’t big play, explosive offenses.

He would build up great offensive lines, and have some success with it. But trying to be so physical came at the expense of other things.

I don’t see how that has changed? We frequently don’t go 4-wide, even though everybody fans trust to review film tell us that’s when we’re most successful.

There’s no tempo to the offense.

There’s little explosion.

We constantly put a refrigerator carrying a piano on the field at TE, because he best serves the in the box physical play and the expense of a spread passing offense.

And we bunch the box up a ton. People think that makes us mult-dimensional. But it doesn’t.

So in the end what we have is an offense that does a pretty good job of being efficient and methodical. But has to death March teams to score. And is doing this what could very easily be the best passing QB we have under Mario if history is any indication.

Saban’s going to have to replace both coordinators this offseason going into his 50th year. Plus I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned here but Saban went 7-6 his first year at Alabama losing to Louisiana Monroe
Come on you can't compare Saban and Marios situation. Someone will always bring up Sabans first year at Bama. What most omit is that he actually improved their win total from the previous year (and the next year won the SEC West and went 12-2). Also, Mario just didn't replace coordinators it was literally over half of his coaches.

I don’t think he’s gone to full air raid, super tempo break neck speed. I think the offense can be if needed, kinda like we saw against TAMU. A think of the offensive methodology depends how the course of the game goes. UNC once TVD was hit we started throwing a touch more in the first half. But if the run game is working it’d make sense to lean on the strength of this offense, which is the OL.

It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but there were clear issues with the smash and pound style under Gattis. A more modern approach was taken but obviously his teams will always be more on the physical side than the wide open finesse side.

The impact guys I see are fortunately at some of the key positions.

Lightfoot will join Wayne, both push for Kelly’s spot next season; this is also under the assumption that Mesidor doesn’t return. I’m assuming Restrepo comes back, but Carr’s speed will find him on the field sooner rather than later. I think he’s our best WR prospect. Not exactly sure how the RB room will shake out with Parrish, Allen, Chaney, Fletcher, Citizen, CJ (someone will assuredly transfer, maybe two)…but Riley is talented enough to push for snaps. Praying we hold onto him. Patterson could very well slide into the two deep at safety.

Artavius Jones (if we can hold on), Pruitt and Trader are in that next tier that probably need some acclimation, but they’re naturally gifted enough that if it clicks early, it can equate to immediate success. The rest? There’s some fine prospects, and a lot that are filler/should wind up at lower P5’s/G5’s imo.

CB is in the worst shape, then DT, then safety imo. I was hoping those first two would be in better shape.

Portal is just tough because you don’t quite know what’s coming. Heck Keon Coleman came in last minute and might have been the most instrumental add of the entire off-season. It’s hard to “rely” on the portal; in a perfect world, you build your foundation through high school, and you Cherry pick 10-12 guys that improve your starting lineup or greatly enhance your two deep. I do agree with the coordinator changes (particularly on offense), as it does indicate Mario isn’t hellbent on a specific type of style. Also have to give credit for the rest of the staff being replaced, but allegedly it was because they were lazy on the trail.

And yet, the results don’t quite match last year’s.
I agree. CB recruiting scares me right now. I’m not a talent evaluator so I’m not gonna talk out of turn. But these guys coming in remind of the DBs we took under Golden, Richt and Diaz. Good local talent but maybe their ceiling is lower than desired.

Maybe I’m wrong but I just don’t remember us being at too many tables for big time guys this season. Obviously outside of the DL prospects. I just wonder if that’s by design. I could be wrong just more thinking out loud.

I’m not a scouting guru either. I worked in a scouting department for baseball as that’s my expertise, but my football knowledge just comes from writing, watching, and listening to how knowledgeable posters like Memnon, Htownkidd, RellyRell, Ghandi, K9, Dolphh, LuCane, etc. (amongst lots of others on this site) evaluate and translate what they see in film.

I think we were at the table for a few more guys than we remember, but it gets murky because some of them were only to (allegedly) drive up the price of the bag. Remember, recruits and schools were using us because Miami was affiliated with big NIL.

True. Either way intentional or not, I agree the recruiting needs to improve if Mario wants to seriously contend.

which year? Remember, UM lost five straight years to Vatech to begin the Davis era, lol
1999 VT 43- The U 10.

I told Paul that while Butch was a good coach he was not a great one and we would not win anything while he was our head coach. I proved right, but he did build the 2001 team.................I have mellowed over the years.......................
