Michael Johnson Jr to Penn State

I liked MJJ as a prospect.

But under no circumstance, even if you're only looking to fill one spot at a position, do you only recruit one person. It is idiotic.

There's a huge difference between "I'm so confident I can get a kid I'm gonna give him more focus & recruit him more aggressively than my other targets at his position" and "I'm recruiting him and nobody else". Especially when the kid doesn't have historically strong ties to your program.

This is what happens. Hopefully things work out by February. And hopefully Junior Richt learns from this. If not, and QB recruiting is shaky again next year, Senior Richt needs to call a spade a spade.

Yeah, this right here.

It's not the end of the world, but they should have been pursuing some other guys too. Maybe they have been, but if so it's been real quiet.

As for Richt Jr., I can't put this on him. I won't put it on anybody until February, but if we don't sign a good QB by then this is on Sr. He's the guy who decides who we recruit and how hard we go. And if Jr. did made the call to only focus on MJJ, that's on Sr. too...he shouldn't have let that happen.

We need a QB this year. We have time to find one. Get it done.

And with that, he still committed there!!! Lawrence looks like the real deal and it didn't scare him away. That's someone I want!! Thats a players who likes to compete! That's what this program is built on! Again I love CMRs energy but continuously recruiting one guy and telling everyone else to kick rocks isn't an approach anyone else takes either. UGA and BAMA play in the NC last year and both are heading into fall with QB contoversys. You recruit the best players and let them settle it on campus. I don't think you should ever have a class without a qb. And recruiting one guy only with any fallback plan seems misguided
And he DID best Choate Hall.....or was it the other way around? I can"t remember now.

Agree with everything you said, except it was clear they didn't like what they saw from Taisun or they would've offered him....right or wrong evaluation tbd. Neither were that inspiring can't miss guys. Seemed like an intentional half hearted effort by staff at landing a QB this year.
i dont think you can call it half hearted when our QB coach flew literally across the entire country almost as far from miami as possible, over like 8 times to see him.

This isn’t by accident. Depth chart will be wide open for a 2020 QB like Max Johnson, who I would expect to commit early. Let’s not give too much life to such a non-issue.

From everything I've read and heard, Max is not the guy. In fact, it would be a yuuuge mistake to put all the eggs in the Max basket.

Should we give him credit for that or give his old man credit?

Great question. Does his old man get fault for this or does he? Can’t have it both ways. I have stated this before in other threads, this is on Mark Richt. People keep coming for Jr’s head but all QB decisions are Mark Richts and it’s not debatable in my opinion.

Why do so many people think its fine not to get a qb this cycle?
As I see it, with malik gone next year, and if most people expect Jarren to win the job at some point this year, why wouldnt it be likely both kosi and weldon transfer. Leaving us with nothing behind Jarren in 2019.

I think I’m gonna have to agree with you. But I’m curious to know what little Richt does. Basically, Miami shouldn’t have sold out for this kid. Now they have an opportunity to get that guy from Nola who looks like a promising prospect.

Could be a situation similar to 2009. Marve transferred along with 2 other guys and the only guys left were Harris and Aj Highsmith a true freshman at the time. Imagine if Harris got hurt....Need at least 3 QBs on your roster at all times. I feel like the 3rd place finisher next year transfers. In my opinion that may be Weldon. So the 2019 situation could be Jarren, Perry, and a 2019 recruit which Miami needs to get.

Will make it easier to get a great QB in the 20 class. We have our starting QB for a few years.

He is the QB coach and helps probably with film breakdown and recruiting but he gets his orders from Pops. Other QB coaches around the country probably have more responsibilities than he does since his dad is head coach and OC. Also, Brown is Co-OC. I would guess most other QB coaches are also the OC. Our staff setup is different than most I believe.

Got it thank you. I’ve never bashed him until now but could also blame CMR too. I just wish Miami had a better plan at the qb position instead of selling out for this guy.

Imagine if Highsmith wasn't there in 2009. then it would be the same situation if both kosi and weldon transfer, just like marve, cook, and smith did. It seems to me like we have to get a qb this cycle. it would be a bottom of the barrel transfer who would want to come play behind a sophmore qb. that, or we are a concussion away from relying on a walkon in 2019.

Find a high upside QB with measurables and let’s go after him. I don’t care about stars and rankings. Look at the 2018 NFL draft, Josh Allen, Mayfield, Jackson. None of those guys were big time recruits (only darnold was). Get a QB with potential, stash him for 2-3 years and go from there. No point in not taking one every class.

****, the writing was on the wall, but I still hoped we would catch a break.

We haven't ever had a QB like him and I was excited about the prospect of it. His ground game is reminicint of Vick, Young, etc. I didn't see them in high school, but dude is a legit threat to house it anytime he's running the ball.

Throwing, he would have had to put some work in here, but it isn't like he's a bad passer. That's just the skill he needed to improve more. He would've had the time to fine tune his game and set the world on fire three years down the road.

Good luck to him. Very high ceiling and it sucks, but fortunately this is a year we could miss. I hope we go after someone like him soon as these WR's, RB's and TE's with a set of wheels like his would be deadly. The defense is left with no option but playing straight up as every man can beat you.

Kirby was highly rated coming out of HS as I recall. Hard to predict how QBs turn out.

We were competing with Purdue for his signature. Kirby made a name at the Elite 11 competition in Texas, we became interested, and that's that. Anyone who looked at his numbers in high school knew back then he wasn't worth the offer. My cousin lived down there and went to see him, basically saying WTF is Miami thinking.
