Michael Johnson Jr to Penn State

So I guess we should stop recruiting with 4 months to go until early signing and 6 months to go in regular signing. Remind me again, when did Miami offer Jarren Williams?

Where in my post did i even mention that? I didn't.

I said it's a fail and i explained why. I mentioned nothing about not recruiting moving forward. Why do some make assumptions and predict where posts were going when they don't?

To ONLY recruit 1 guy and then lose him when everyone knows he's the one you wanted and you ignored MOST others to this point is a bad look. QBs are a certain breed and want to feel like "the guy". Yeah i know many top players want to feel like that, but it seems like QBs especially do. They are usually captains and alphas all through the lower ranks. When you ignore them on the trail or make them feel like a backup plan, you run the risk of losing them......and since many of the top guys like to pick their spot, they commit early and are probably less likely to change when a team comes calling after their "one and only" publicly chooses to go elsewhere. QBs are the most important players on the field. When you miss, it hurts. When you miss in multiple years, it sets your program back. Look at how bad some of our QB has been over the last 10 years. Look at what Bama was able to do without a QB (and imagine what they could have done with one, same with LSU). Look at Clemson only having a chance bc of Watson. People can talk Kosi and Jarren all you want, but we haven't seen it on the field yet. Until we do, QB is still a need. Georgia stacked chips with Fromm and Fields after Eason. Bama stacked chips with Tua during Hurt's freshman year (and Tua makes them better, he should be starting). Clemson continues to stack chips. SC and Stanford stack QBs every year. Several never reach their HS ranking, which is why you can never stop looking.

Some on here don't agree but i still think we got super lucky with Jarren. Yes other top schools came at him late and we kept him, but if he was committed to a good team and not Kentucky, there's a good chance it wouldn't have gone down like that.

Long time Cane's fan and website reader, first time poster so be easy on the kid...Now lets get down to business

So we struck out on this kid... To say that this might have been expected is an understatement. Kids at this age and time are fickle so things like this are bound to happen. What's more alarming is that we went all in with virtually no back up plan. I agree, this is on the coaching staff. When you you put all your eggs in one basket, the wolves (or in this case Nittany Lion) will have an easy lunch on you. No sense in crying over spilled milk ( albeit a pretty large spill) we have to regroup and attempt to salvage this QB recruiting class and look to hit big in 2020. With Perry, Jarren, and Cade still on the roster, I think we'll be ok if we nab a QB. I personally think based on what I've read and have been seeing is Jarren is the more talented of the bunch but doesn't have the time under his belt for the acclimation of the system just yet. That being said...

Replacements:

Scouring the sites and such I first present Justin Fomby out of Central Gwinnett. If the high school sounds familiar its because that the same high school Jarren Williams came from the previous year. That should work in our favor for one. From all indications he's current uncommitted and ahs been hitting the camp circuit He's 6'4 185 so that's pretty good size for the position. He's a Pro-Style QB but with him having been at Ohio State, that tells from a context clue standpoint, he has some mobility. That and he was clocked at a 4.68. Mizzou and NC state are also looking at him. With both of those programs having better QB play in the last couple years than ours, using semantics and logic (A=B and B=C so A must equal C) I think those programs have an idea of what a good or potentially good QB looks like, and with Miami being the higher profile and a follow GA in Jarren on the roster. I think we should take a look at him and go in. Lastly, from the film I saw on him, he looked like he has potential and after this season I don't think he'll be an unknown.

The other two are Zach Calzada out of Buford, Ga. This is purely on the basis of using Jimbo's QB evaluation against him. Winston had a good year under Jimbo and while he regressed some is second year, I think that was due mostly to letting the fame of winning a championship and Heisman get to his head. Francois was a good recruit from a football playing standpoint and Blackman is another one. If Jimbo knows anything its QB's. Coupled with the fact that our defensive line coach Simpson has high familiarity with the area and connections, I think it would be worth a shot.

Lastly, David Baldwin out of IMG Academy. Currently, uncommitted, he's originally he's from Calif but transferred for his senior year. He called Oregon and Florida State his dream schools. With the uncertainty at FSU and the type of offense Taggart incorporates and subsequently the type of players he needs for that offense, I don't think that's a good fit. Now with Oregon it's tougher. Cristobal is "from the crib" and a master recruiter. Don't know how good of a head coach he will be at THIS level, but he has mouthpiece to snag any recruit in the country given a chance. Baldwin is in state now so I say lets roll the dice on that after an evaluation.

SO, that's where I'm at on our QB situation. Looking forward to what anyone else's suggestions.

Great Day IMO! Sorry, was rooting against his commitment. Can't say I'd rather have no QB, but this guy is Emory part 2. I'm on the Tai train. But watch Emory at Floriduh. And I'd rather have nothing.

And for numbers:
The top 29 Pro Style QBs are currently committed.
22 of the top 25 dual threat QBs are currently committed.

I've been saying this was retarded from the very ******* beginning however many months ago it was. We should have cast a wider net, and we should have focused on Taisun.

Now I Honestly doubt we get a QB this year, which really is fine. Like its not that big of a deal. I'm actually hoping we only sign like 20-23 players this class. Because the way its looking, we're going to need a lot of attrition to get a big class in 2020, and that class looks better than 2019 to me....

Just move on to 2019 for the QB position as far as I'm concerned. And if they don't get Max Johnson or some other top player, what the **** is Jon Richt doing on this staff?

Many of us saw this coming - the proverbial putting all the eggs into the OOS bucket when we had a kid dying to come here? Shame on our staff for missing this one.

No surprise there. QB recruiting IMO needs to be reassessed. Seems like it is becoming a trend where we are late in the game looking for a QB. Im not stressed about this year. But 2020 this can not continue.

The kid that committed to Clemson is likely not going to play or I wouldn't be surprised in the end if he signs elsewhere. They are all in with Lawrence who outperformed Bryant in their spring game. Will Lawrence win the job? At some point in the season. That kid from Connecticut sits for 3 years.

And with that, he still committed there!!! Lawrence looks like the real deal and it didn't scare him away. That's someone I want!! Thats a players who likes to compete! That's what this program is built on! Again I love CMRs energy but continuously recruiting one guy and telling everyone else to kick rocks isn't an approach anyone else takes either. UGA and BAMA play in the NC last year and both are heading into fall with QB contoversys. You recruit the best players and let them settle it on campus. I don't think you should ever have a class without a qb. And recruiting one guy only with any fallback plan seems misguided

This isn’t by accident. Depth chart will be wide open for a 2020 QB like Max Johnson, who I would expect to commit early. Let’s not give too much life to such a non-issue.

A great season where our young skill position players ball out will make this the opportunity of a lifetime for any uncommitted QB.

The problem is more and more of them are comitting early and sticking.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Imo it won't be a disaster, but definitely a disappointment not to have a QB in this class.

Agree with everything you said, except it was clear they didn't like what they saw from Taisun or they would've offered him....right or wrong evaluation tbd. Neither were that inspiring can't miss guys. Seemed like an intentional half hearted effort by staff at landing a QB this year.

I like the way this staff recruits qb's, the track record is clear, "you're our guy, that's it" especially when we set up decent with 3 qb's ready to battle it out behind rosier. This staff is only looking to bring in an elite qb every cycle so there approach makes sense. As oppose to just log jamming the qb roster by getting one every year just for the sake of getting one. You can normally recruit a bunch of db's, o & d linemen, receivers, but you normally only bringing in 1 or 2 qb's so the margin of era is real small. I dont like to use this guys name as an example because he'll always go down in Cane lore for beating Fsu on that last drive in my book, but under coach richt, we not ending up with no more kirby freeman's on the roster.

Now if we dont get a qb recruit or 2 come next year, than yall can panic!
Kirby was highly rated coming out of HS as I recall. Hard to predict how QBs turn out.
