Mel Kiper Opines About Kaaya, Njoku, Elder, etc.

I'm tired of hearing about Njoku as a potential first rounder. It won't happen. Period. Do you realize how rare it has become for any TE to go in the 1st?

First round TEs over the last 5 years:

2016 - none
2015 - none
2014 - Ebron
2013 - Eifert
2012 - none
2011 - none

Corn will get drafted in the 2nd-4th. If he's drafted later he may have some dirt we don't know about. Like someone said earlier ball skills>>>height. Look at Tavon Young, rookie CB from the Ravens. for example. Didn't really blow up the Combine and had average measurables all-around but was drafted in the 4th and is one of the better CBs in the NFL already. Corn should have a better Combine and has the school's brand behind him unlike Young who went to Temple ironically enough.

With Njoku most likely gone to the draft, I can see the fins picking him up in the second round with the pick around 50ish. I expect Nook's draft stock to soar after pro day and combine. Thoughts?

You put this kids highlight tape on and it's incredible, but if you put on his mistakes of the season, I bet none of the other tight ends on the board have it worse then him. He clearly has the highest ceiling so it's his decision to fix his issues in the NFL or at the U. It's a toss up anyway you look at it bc he has 1st round talent. Come back and play with your boy so you can try and slide him in the first round next year along with yourself.

I say he is not drafted in the first two rounds. Only second rounder last year was Henry, and Njoku is nowhere near as ready as Henry was.

Not bashing the kid, just recognizing the value of a second round pick.

Njoku would be the go for me if i was the gm in the 2nd for my fins.

We literally have nothing starting out there...dion sims is the inline guy but always hurt...and the white guy from usc is like the lb recruit witt we got a few years ago that never played for um. So ya..Njoku could come in and get reps early on

Miami has MUCH bigger needs than TE in the 2nd Round.

Actually we don't. We just need CB's and a competent TE...Njoku would be perfect

That's what makes scouting and the NFL Draft so much fun. I value your opinion b/c if i remember correctly your dad is in the business and i'm sure you discuss things all the time (i would give a body part to do that for a living - i still do it as hobby and have tried getting internships to break into the business with no luck), but IMO they have many issues that need to be resolved to move forward as a franchise and this TE class has depth, so there might be better value later. TEs can be valuable playmakers, but there's only 5 in the top 50 NFL receivers (in yards) and only 1 (Olsen) was drafted higher than Round 3. The impact is lesser than other positions.

The offense has been terrible at times and the Oline and Tannehill continue to struggle. Stills will also be FA, Parker hasn't made the jump yet bc of injuries and there is zero depth behind Ajayi (still don't understand the Drake draft position and role on the team). TE is a need.

On defense, we need a DE opposite Wake and DBs who can cover. I'm more terrified of the LB situation next year. Jenkins is good but can't seem to stay healthy. Plus, him and Kiko are FAs.

At TE, i do really like Njoku. He drops the ball (or double catches) more than my liking but he's an athletic freak with upside who's still learning. But the draft also has OJ Howard, Evan Engram, Bucky Hodges, and Jordan Leggett who could go rounds 1-3 and additional depth with Jake Butt, Gerald Everett, Jeremy Sprinkle, Jonnu Smith, Cole Hikutini, and Pharaoh Brown. The Senior Bowl, Combine and workouts could really separate these guys and change my opinion, but for now i like the value of the depth. Free agency and how the draft board falls would also impact value/slotting.

Oh Nooooo we don't need a TE. Sims is going to be good. We need a whole new secondary and more OL help because the starters can't stay healthy. No way in **** Dolphins use a 2nd round pick on TE.
We definitely need a TE. Cant go into next season with Sims as the number 1, with his concussion issues. LB play is probably the biggest need as well as a couple of other depth needs (OL, CB, DL), but the Fins will have potentially $55 million in cap space to fix most of these needs (hopefully LB being the top priority).

Plus I could see Gase campaigning hard for a guy like Njoku, with all the success he had with Julius Thomas in Denver.

NJOKU will be a star in the league. His potential is enormous. I would love for the fins to get him.

Njoku is still raw and doesn't have great hands. If his 40 is sub 4.65 at the combine he could go top 50 picks easy. If not I don't see it.

Someone is going to fall in love with Njoku, based on measureables, but I don't know if someone pulls the trigger on him the first two rounds. The potential is there, the film isn't where you would want it. Njoku is limited as ****, and it comes out in film, he isn't a great route runner, his hands are spotty as all ****, and his willingness to block is questionable to say the least. Physically, David is everything you want in a tight end, but he is still a developmental pick. That's why I think he should seriously consider returning, another developmental year at Miami, and he would be able to write his own ticket, and cash in on a big time first contract, instead of putting all of his eggs on his second contract. A lot of guys play that game with the second contract, and never get there, you have to maximize yourself every step of the way.

The other issue is the TE class is stacked this year. There aren't high picks but a lot of guys that'll get consideration with Njoku in mid rounds. He should come back unless he knows he's gonna pull a Vernon Davis at the combine. It'd be pretty cool to be able to ball with your lil bro for a year also. It's smart to let everyone know you're flirting now to build that hype regardless.
