Manny Navarro on Guidry

What was the flaw that you noticed during the hiring process?

??? I'm not in the **** interview

I also don't think Guidry is an automatic "Fire" just yet, I'm just saying

I think we can all agree that the defense has been disappointing…I didn't expect top 10, but I did expect top 15-25. Many on this board are down and at least asking legit questions with scheme stuff…And when we are talking a failure like Gattis and now a DC with a distinct standout scheme and issues arising from that scheme. Your HC should be knowledgable enough on both sides of the ball to know there may be issues with this scheme, what they are, etc...

If we are going to say "Mario will make the decision accordingly"…Why was the incorrect one made in the 1st place?

Like how in the **** after this so-called strenuous, overboard hiring process…Do you end up with Josh Gattis? And again, I'm a Mario fan who has actually been called an apologist on this board. I'm just saying…Is he a complete meathead with no X/O acumen?

How many guys from last years defense are playing in the NFL this year? I don't know why the position coaches are getting a pass... they all look bad. Also, Mario has made 4 coordinator hires this since he got here and apparently 3 of them will be fired with in two years of their tenure. That's ******* terrible and I really don't know how we're supposed to expect him to get the 5th on right.

To be fair, we've gotten incrementally better at each coordinator spot each time.

So...I'd assume we can get incrementally better again?

Dawson will be in some HC decisions this offseason, for sure. Whether he gets one or not is another story.

I'd go with Meathead (and I'm a Mario fan, as well). ...

A few additional thoughts. 1. no one gets every hire correct. 2. Mario has a personality that is extremely hard to work for when you're already somewhat established like coordinators are. 3. the best candidate isn't always available so you take best available, which may not be good enough. 4. as you say, who's to say Guidry doesn't turn out to be a home run? We've had a really rough patch. But he looked good last year, his resume checks out and he seems smart enough to adjust.

Let's hope he gets a lot better with his choices. We all need him to get better. As far as Dawson goes, it seemed like there were some questions regarding him coming into the season and Guidry was the one teams would want to poach. This season Dawson has Cam making the offense god like and Guidry lost some talent to the NFL and looks like saggy ***. It'll be interesting to see what Dawson has next year when he loses Cam and X.. maybe some others. I'm not trying to be the mope of mopes but **** I better not see the same ******* terrible D over and over anymore. I'm hurt dog and I don't want to hear about 9-1 when with a little bit of competence we'd be 10-0.

Look at his press conferences the last couple of weeks. Super defensive and condescending

I think he’s already gone and knows it

My thoughts on Guidry are that every week during his press conference he just smiles and repeats what he has said in previous weeks.

Something to the effect that it takes us a few quarters to adjust to what the offense is doing because we prepared for xyz and that by the third quarter we start playing better etc.

Dude, it’s your job to have the defense ready at the start of games!

We are not in a position to wait until the third quarter anymore and we’ve had the same issues going on 2 months.

How about you scheme something that their offense isn’t ready for, for a change. Now that would be refreshing.

Don’t want to sound negative going into such an important part of the season but I have kept hoping something good can happen on defense for the last 7 or 8 games, yet nothing changes.

Hoping the bye week can create some sort of miracle on D, starting vs Wake.

That would be rough 3 DCs in 4 years. Definitely calls into question his judgment and/or his ability to get certain coaches to work for him.
I think Steele is a very smart DC but the timing of the hire and situation was just “off” I guess is all I can say. Guidry I like as well but something just isn’t right

And when you keep feeling that way you gotta start wondering if it’s the obvious

Any names of potential candidates? No teams seem to have a great DC and Manny at Duke isn't available. Especially no DC in the ACC aspires to greatness, how about Indiana Bryant Haines? or ND Al Golden....both have top 5 defenses.

Mods, is it possible for me to delete someone else's account?

For the x's and o's guys, did Guidry have scheme issues last year, or trouble having his personnel align properly?

Last year it seemed like he was the talk of the board because he was available to overcome the many injuries the defense suffered, and in doing so kept the team in many games despite TVD's inability to function as a QB
SP+ 40th defense a year ago, 35th now

I was going to say the same thing. Kevin Steele came from the old establish roots in strong conferences and programs and historically always had a good defense. He just runs a defense that has equal to, or greater talent then who he's playing and he'd do fine. He was good from his Clemson stop in 2009 all the way to Alabama after us.

Just got hired at a time we didn't have any horses and had a offense where the defense have to keep us ion the game. The fundamental and schemes were solid, but didn't run gimmickery type defense like Manny Diaz, which only works for so long.

His defense you have to play good balanced football with good players, assuming you have equal or greater talent. Then you'd have to rely on the ability of the OC. A la UGA, Alabama, OSU, etc.

Were at a point now in the program because of talent acquisition we can begin to start running more conventional NFL style defenses
