Manny Navarro on Guidry

1. No way we recruited the worst safeties with the poorest eye discipline in the entire acc. Was Meesh making the same mistakes at UW?

2. Please tell me in what other games this season did GT run for more yards.
What game this season did Duke have similar or better offensive stats?
What game did Cal exploit a teams defense, they scored more points against UC Davis and wake. They beat down Oregon state. Other than that they got mostly shot down by everyone including fsu. Freaking fsu!!!!!!.
What other game did GT convert a 3rd and 18 for 30 yards?

This is an extremely concerning pattern and trajectory with multiple threads addressing the issues on defense that no one has answers for.

I don’t see a way you keep him. I don’t see a way you keep the db coach.

There’s huge money being thrown around to defensive players and you have 2 years of average to below average performance to show them. Sometimes money isn’t enough.

From a pure optics and business person he has to be let go regardless of he’s good or not. You have nothing to sell unless we lock teams down for the rest of the season.

Unfortunately, my prediction is that the defense isn’t getting fixed and it will be the reason we either don’t make the playoffs or get bounced out of contention early and easily.

I already had a opinion on Guidry's adjustments last season and they were red flags. I approved overall with what he did last season with injuries and running a 3-3 stack. I very much liked his D at Marshall. I have personally seen enough now. I think we give D. Nick a look if he just doesn't take the FSU job. I say that believing D coaching has been bad across the board. I didn't believe we could hold onto D. Nick and JT this off-season unless D Nick were made the DC. Not saying that's my move, but he gets a interview.
Golden sued Miami to get paid, that's a done deal. Who knows if he runs his AL Grohl D (Miami) or Freemans D (ND) at his next stop. If he has common sense that Grohl D is gone. Regardless, I don't think this happens until after the portal and then we get the unfortunate process of Mario making staff changes. 3 or 4 months probably. He should already have a short list of coaches at every position ready to contact for interviews. I think his pool shrinks smaller and smaller because his expectations of work hours and recruitment. That puts a emphasis on up and comers who want it. Not many proven vets are looking for a position like that when they have options with basically the same salary.

Bit of an underrated comment. Hard to explain Powell going from playing in the national championship game on an outstanding defense to looking like he’s never played organized
football. 6th year senior who played slot CB and safety This is a kid whose dad went to Harvard and mom went to Columbia. My guess is that he’s a rather intelligent player. Guidry’s scheme (or lack thereof) is making him look much worse than he is.

Btw- if looking for a DC, I would recommend Cristobal look at Powell’s DC at UW, Bill Inge. Runs a 4-2-5 so not something foreign to the players on the roster. Currently the LB coach at Tennessee. I liked how UW played defense last year. UW tends to have to make up for lack of talent compared to a school like Oregon through being smarter and better disciplined. It worked for them.

Some of you never had to hire anyone and it shows. Most employers have a 90 day probation period for a reason. Guidry was good, now he’s not. Move on.

Any names of potential candidates? No teams seem to have a great DC and Manny at Duke isn't available. Especially no DC in the ACC aspires to greatness, how about Indiana Bryant Haines? or ND Al Golden....both have top 5 defenses.
What makes you think AL Golden would ever come back to UM?
Are you under the impression that it ended in good terms?

I realize I lean to the side of the Slurpers, but is this little nugget really necessary? Technically, you're not wrong and we can both manipulate the statistics to "prove" that to this point, he has indeed been mediocre. However, in doing so, it would require us to omit the trajectory of the program and culture.
Before you reply with the canned "If we didn't have Cam Ward, we would be 3-7" hyperbole (I just hyperbole'ed a hyperbole there - hope you caught that!), I am well aware that our defense sucks and has sucked all year. I am also well aware that Cam is awesome and has carried the team. My point is about the excess negativity that's come out amongst a fair share of our fans. I find the people who find the negative in everything generally suck in life. I'm not accusing you of this by any stretch - it's my own hang up. I'm simply stating why I get annoyed with the over-the-top negativity exuding from some people on here. It's like listening to Veruca Salt demand things NOW!
I admire you’re willingness to try and save these ppl.

We get the defense has been bad. But the crazy confirmation bias that happens here and toxic levels of negativity is just mind numbing.

Literally 90% of CIS approved HCs,OCs and DCs have flamed out, got fired or just been “good” and ppl act like they are football coach hiring gurus.

Lebby* fired by Deion, aranda, Riley, frost, Herman da Savage, heupel has been good but his offense struggles against good teams. this list can go on and on.

Lane is the flavor of the month as CIS gooroos who dissect which hands Mario uses to whip his butt willfully omit Lanes disastrous tenure at big time programs.

Now it’s duhvelopment problems cuz we aren’t playing a ton of soph or freshman. (None of the top are relying on more than 2-3 as key contributors).

CIS celebrated the Powell signing since he was the top safety in the portal and hand a bunch of offers. Now he’s having a bad year and it’s “oh evals suck”… then literally everyone was wrong not just the canes staff.

I could go on. The buck stops at Mario, He hasn’t backed down from that. And no it wasnt the quick fix turnaround.

But the reality is that the program was in a really bad state many on this board just refuse to accept that.

They expect us to dominate every game and win by 35 when the roster is no where near that level of talent to not occasionally be in these dog fights and even lose to some of these teams.

I'd go with Meathead (and I'm a Mario fan, as well). ...

A few additional thoughts. 1. no one gets every hire correct. 2. Mario has a personality that is extremely hard to work for when you're already somewhat established like coordinators are. 3. the best candidate isn't always available so you take best available, which may not be good enough. 4. as you say, who's to say Guidry doesn't turn out to be a home run? We've had a really rough patch. But he looked good last year, his resume checks out and he seems smart enough to adjust.
5. Mario’s hiring process taking forever leaving us with Barebone coaches that are available.
