Luther Campbell is an idiot

Maybe I did miss your point. For the record, I do have some concerns with the current 2nd and 3rd string receivers. I'm not overly optimistic about them. I don't see the game changers in those groups. I hope 1-2 emerge as everyday starters. However, I am willing to see their progress over the next year. I didn't expect them to get any playing time over this current group we have. I actually didn't think Horton would be this good this year, but look at his progression.

We probably do go to the portal for a WR. Even if we were confident in the returning group, I'm sure we will look to the portal. Nothing wrong with that. I've come to accept we will look to the portal to upgrade positions, no matter how solid those positions might be.

For the WR group, we might have to go the portal out of necessity instead of just upgrade. Hopefully, that is not the case.

As for the point about the Dolphins, I could care less about what NFL teams do with their receivers. I don't think it relates at all with what college's do at the WR position. College football does not rotate receivers like the NFL. I would need to know why Waddle and Hill are coming off the field. I don't think it's because the receivers replacing Waddle and Hill are actually better than them. NFL also runs so many more exotic and advanced packages. At the NFL level, every player is a threat.
I disagree with the way the portal is being used. It should be used to fill the gaps. Mario is using as a result of not developing some of the players. He'll be in year 4 next year. When does it wind down to a smaller number of transfers?

He and his staff have made the choice to not play the younger talent. He said he would, but the one's that have played have been purely out of necessity with the exception of Lyles.

It's the lack of development and more so the lack of trust that infuriates me. Let me be clear. Development includes game reps. For example, Lyles is now getting more game reps. It's easy to see and project what he'll contribute next year. You need that at every position. Even giving the backup QB reps, which we don't.

Our Podcasters and fanbase sound just like FSU fans and FSU media. No development. No problem. We'll just be kings of the transfer portal. All is good.

Do you attend practices? We don't know anything beyond our 1st team. All the Podcaster that attended spring and fall practices said JoJo is next level and should see the field this year. Thst didn't happen. I thought Shemar Kirk was outstanding in the Spring game. No sighting from him or any other WRs.

We don't know where these guys stand in their development. I don't think they're not playing due to development. It's my opinion that the coaches are all in with just 4 WRs thst Cam has the most connection with. He hasn't had games reps with anyone else. How can you play Jojo & company when they don't have game reps with Cam. They certainly aren't going to do it with the ACC and CFP on the line. I think it is a gross failure not integrating them into the offense.

It really should be no surprise as Mario went with veterans instead of younger talent at nearly every position. Frederique emerged out of necessity of a limited CB room. He was able to display his his skills.

I would argue that if Mario brought in 2 top high priced CBs from the portal, Frederique would have been pushed down the depth chart. He would be wowing us on the 2nd and 3rd strings, but they wouldn't risk putting him in critical game situations. Out of need, he was able to showcase his abilities and gain the coaches trust as he is now our best DB.
No, I don't attend practices.

So, there were a lot of positive reports about JoJo during the spring and fall practices. Perhaps he is really good and just needs to work on a few things to be trusted to earn more playing time. Maybe he's still learning the playbook or still needs to improve on his blocking, or route running. He's only a true freshman. Maybe another year of spring and fall practice and he's a solid contributor for us next year, like Horton is this year.

You thought Kirk looked really good in the Spring game. Maybe you are right and Kirk is good, just needs to tweak a few little things. Perhaps neither him or JoJo are on the same level as X, Horton, George, and Brown and they don't deserve playing time.

All our veteran receivers are very good. I don't want other receivers playing over them. One can argue Brown has been a disappointment. He looks the part on some plays, but then disappears for much of the game.

You also might be right that Cam has a better rapport with X, Horton, Brown, and George. Cam is gone next year and two or three of those receivers are gone next year. New qb. Time for those JoJo, Kirk, Carr, Ray Ray to develop that relationship with our new qb, whether that be somebody already on campus or a qb we get from the portal. We wont be the only team with these issues come spring.

It's just seems like they're all in on this year and are sacrificing the development of some of our players for next year.

We either come out against ND with a lot of inexperienced players or we are heavy in the portal again. Mario has to wind down the portal and trust the talent he recruited or he'll never get out of that cycle. He's gone to the portal as much as Norvell did. Norvell hit in previous years and Mario not so much. Now, Mario hit and Norvell didn't. I think Mario has somewhat of an obsession with the portal constantly trying to improve the roster, but that can be to his detriment. Trust the players you recruited.

I think you made a good point in a previous post. You said we really don't know where these guys (Carr, JoJo, Kirk, Ray Ray, etc...) stand in their development. Hard to gauge their development since we don't see them on the field.

Both you and I admit that we don't know if our current group of 2nd/3rd string receivers are being developed. I happen to think they are, based on our other current receivers, but I don't know for sure. The point of this thread was to point out the fallacy of Luke's claim. He took a shot at our WR coach and stated our WR's are NOT being developed. Bold claim. He doesn't know either and it was wrong for him to attack and make such a bold claim with no facts and supporting information to back up his claim.

His justification for the claim was that we only had 4 receivers with significant targets and receptions. However, if you look at the college landscape, it's the exact same thing for every team. The WR position group at the collegiate level does not rotate players. It just doesn't happen. Our top 4 receivers also happen to be very good.

Also, three of our top 4 receivers were all recruited by UM. Although Beard didn't recruit them and has only been the WR coach for 2 years, all three (Horton, George, X) have improved each year under his guidance.

You’re guys are going to flip a lid when you see the other top 4 offenses and how much they rotate their wrs. (They don’t). Rotating young guys is nice and all when you’re 7-5.

we have the most productive wr room with the number one offense in the country but we are defending this bull****. Sometimes I wonder if we even deserve the success with how retarded our fan base is.

I agree. The 1st thing I posted was that Luke was wrong for going after Beard. It wasn't going to help anyone, but I know he wanted create attention to development. He got it, but went about it the wrong way. They aren't going to play any of the WR regardless of what he said at this point. There's too much on the line.

I don't think we need to be following the rest of college football. The reason is Mario’s propensity towards players with experience. Not playing the young WRs nearly guarantees portal WRs next year playing over them and I hate it. When do they get their shot? It can't be only low risk situations.

We make a big deal out of every high school class. Once they've signed on, it's like they're forgotten. I want to see these young players succeed. I like the guys that have put blood and sweat into the program. I feel that's missing. When there's so many transfers, I don't think they take the same pride in the program. They have a lot less skin in thr game. It's just my opinion. Nothing factually based.

Alll I’m saying is that Butch Davis is giving too many reps to Reggie Wayne and Santana Moss. We keep hearing about how good Andre Johnson is in practice it how do we know until he gets game reps. We’re going to have to open the season with Andre Johnson, Ethenic Sands and Kevin Beard at wideout with no experience. It just seems like Butch is sacrificing tomorrow for today by only playing the upperclassmen.

It’s the same old story. There’s still fans that think it’s possible for college teams to be experienced at every single position as if players aren’t constantly cycling in and out of the program. That and there's always fans who have a favorite recruit and then lose their minds when he doesn’t immediately become the superstar they just knew he’d become.

The early season non-conference cupcake games were the time to play the backups and the benches got emptied, especially against FAMU and Ball State. We’re now in the stretch run and we’re trying to win a conference and even a national championship. It’s not the time to get some third or fourth stringer “important reps for the future”.

This year has been quirky. Never expected to be 10-1, possible ACC Championship and CFB playoff on the line. Mario’s riding this team till it’s done. We have scored a lot of points, but no real blowouts that we could afford some playing time to these kids. If we were 8-3/9-2, and just playing for a bowl, I would expect to see the younger guys, especially at QB, late in games. Right now it’s win and move on. Let’s be like Mario and ride this mfer till its conclusion and the worry about next season. Go Canes🙌🏽

Top 3 teams in the country and Miami just behind. Looks like we are right on par with the best and how receptions are distributed. Most teams have their main 3-5 and then 2-3 after that.

Yes, Luke's comment was inaccurate and just plain wrong to publicly attack coach Beard. It comes off as just grievances for not playing Ray Ray. He should not have posted on Twitter/X. However, I think people should watch the Canesville podcast instead of just dismissing his post on X formerly Twitter as crazy disgruntled Luke.

On the Canesville podcast, Luke explains that outside of the QB room, the WR room is the ONLY position group that backups haven't played any significant game reps. So, his position is either Mario is telling Beard not to play backups or Beard is making that decision on his own or perhaps Dawson is telling him not to rotate WRs. Luke hedges that Mario would NOT put his thumb on WR coach Beard, but allow all the other position groups to rotate as those coaches see fit. He wouldn't single out Beard, but allow the other position coaches to substitute .freely. Therefore, he points his finger at Beard.

Luke says that player development is not just about practice. He said game reps are critical to player development. If you're not getting players game reps, they're not fully developing.

Another point Luke made is that based on the lack of game reps, we will have an inexperienced WR room in 2025 not knowing who will emerge. So, they're either going to play inexperienced players at the WR position or they're going to bring in transfers with experience to play in front of them.

I get Luke's point in the podcast. There are 13 players in the WR room. Only 4 play any meaningful snaps. If none of those other 9 WRs are ready to contribute, then whose fault is that? So, if we have an injury to any combination of Restrepo, George, Brown, or Horton, then we'll get the other WRs ready to play? It's a failure not having backups ready to contribute at any given moment. The same thing goes for QB, which we haven't provided any meaningful game reps to keep them ready.

At this point, none of the 9 backup WRs are going to get any game reps barring injury. We'll go into the 2025 season with only 1 experienced WR in Horton if Brown moves on. So, Mario is either going to play inexperienced WRs against ND and FL or he's going to hit the transfer portal for experienced WRs to play in front of this year's backups.

So, when does the talented WR classes see the field? If anyone says they'll work them in with the transfers next year, I'd argue why? Inexperienced WRs aren't playing this year, why would they play next year? The expectations for team next year won't be any different from this year. If anything, the expectations will be greater. If they integrate inexperienced WRs next year, why aren't they doing this year? Again, the expectations for the team aren't going to change. If you say the backup WRs aren't ready this year, but will be ready next year, then whose fault is that? That is the reason why Luke attacked Beard. There are no backup WRs ready to play this year in that entire WR room. That is a coaching failure or you're simply choosing not to play capable backups in any meaningful snaps, if even to just give the starters a break to keep fresh legs.

For those that argue Horton put in work to make himself a bigger contributor this year I would point out that Horton got significant game reps last year, which is why they let Colby Young walk. Horton played a lot and had more catches last year than the entire backup WRs have this year. They knew what Horton would project into because they saw it in the games he played in. That is my point.

At the end of this season, we'll know nothing about 90% of our WR room because they'll have little to no game experience. That's 3 years of WR recruiting going into year 4, and 1 WR will have experience. That's 3 years of WR recruiting that is going to be "portaled over" in year 4. How is that a sell to WR recruits? The decisions Mario, Dawson, and Beard have made this year regarding the WR room will have consequences next year.

Ray Ray has had opportunities but he has not done much with them. He had a touchdown that hit him right between the numbers and he dropped it. Ward didn't look for him since. This is about winning games and trust and if QB1 can't trust you and someone else makes the plays they will continue getting targets and Ray Ray won't simple as that.. cream rises to the top.

Luke is no more relevant than 99% of the fans on CIS and less relevant than the remaining 1%. Some random wanna be posting nonsense.

I still have faith in Ray Ray. Think he doesn’t take risks as a punt returner which in the games we’ve played is essential. He’s not getting a lot of help back there. As a WR, this is his opportunity. If he steps up over the offseason a spot is there for the taking.

Your post is fair and well thought out, so this is not an attack of you or what you wrote.
The WR room has avoided injuries and has produced so the top 4 will play a lot outside of garbage time. The other rooms have played backups in significant time due to injuries. Last year the OL starters played all the time, and no one complained. Same with the two safeties. DL is a position that rotates a lot normally and never just plays the starters.
Maybe just maybe Ray Ray is not good enough and the coaches that are making the decisions are the same ppl that see him practice everyday. The other players in that room are basically true freshman and I would prefer they not play a lot when our offense has to score on every possession so we can win.
I have watched Ray Ray for a few years, and I have never seen him make a play on offense where I was like wow this guy needs more reps. He makes me so nervous when he is back to receive on special teams. His body language back there screams a player that is afraid to mess up.
I don't know the answer to this, but does he block well? Cause they only play the RBs that do and the top 4 Wrs all do an excellent job of it from what I see.
With the way Mario is, I have a hard time believing that Beard is allowed to decide who plays alone and that Mario and Dawson don't have major impact on that as well.

Again....how many reps do you think the young receivers should have this year?
Give us a number.

The amount of assumptions you are making about what will or won't happen next year is asinine.

Since the ACC schedule started, exactly which dogfight game we’ve been in should we “try” these freshmen WR and backup QB in?
