Lu and DMoney: Thoughts on the Offense?

I would've liked to see us attempt a more straight-ahead running attack. Anything East/West is gonna be tough against a defense like Florida's.

The best way to run the ball against a fast defense is straight downhill. I'll take my chances with our O-Line vs. their front-7 in a downhill running attack. The few times we tried it, it looked good.

I see Coley and Waters down the line a little as elite receivers. If Malcolm was healthy he'd be in that elite mix too. People forget how smooth he was early in his FRESHMANS year.

I disagree fincane...our WR's are elite. If the qb has literally no time to throw he will get jittery, I don't care who you are. Don't believe me, just ask Dan Marino in 1984.

Morris has plenty of time to throw, and if our WR's were elite they would be getting off of coverage.

I think we have one elite WR and I imagine he'll be getting in on 50% of the snaps by the time FSU rolls around.

Agree.

I had the exact same feeling while watching the game. Get a crease and hit it downhill. Duke is great at that. Trying to get outside was never going to happen. Nothing slow-developing will work against that u*** D.

Obviously I haven't seen the All 22 angle so it's hard to say for sure, but the main thing I have noticed is that unless it's play action, our WR's are being blanketed. Now this could be a number of things:
-Coley's play design isn't getting guys open
-Morris is throwing to covered guys and not seeing open WR's...assuming there are some open
-Combination of both

With our whole offense back except Mike James, i tend to put the blame on Coley. He's the variable. Everything else is the same. Some may say Carroll is a new WR coach. Ok maybe so...but he doesn't design the plays.

Go watch what Georgia is doing. Pretty fun to watch.

We had one quick-hitting handoff to Duke and one to Hagens and then went completely away from it.

Georgia almost looks like the Niners. It's awesome to watch a team be 100% fully invested in a smash mouth running game. None of this reaching and diving and zone crap.

Double the nose and PULL THE FREAKIN GUARD. Send Mongo screaming through the hole and let him and Mo Hagens plow the road for Duke.

No. Doubt.

Malc is just one of those cats that knows how to get open and a kid like that can abuse college DBs that may beat him in "measurables"

Watching the replay, we had quite a few open guys on a number of plays but Morris wasn't going through his progressions

Not sure what the deal is, maybe we're more Miami 2000 than Miami 2001 and this was his Huskie game, and, if that's the case, at least we won this time.

We ran the FB dive with Hagens, mashed the UF front and got like 5 easy yards. Ran ISO with Duke and got 8. *shrugs*

Someone is going to have to show me these wide open guys Morris kept missing because I've now heard it from a few people. Still don't agree with anyone who said he played bad. He should have checked down to Walford a few times but besides that I didn't see anyone running open.

I would have liked us to be more creative to create better down and distance situations but this was one of those grind your *** off games. Florida is a top 5 defense and has one of the best DLines in CFB. Yes, the O could have been better but sometimes you have to tip your cap to the other team and say they had a **** good defense.

I'm not too worried about the offense, think they will be clicking by the time ACC play rolls around.

There was one play where he was rolling out left and had Walford by himself in the middle of the field and he throw the ball to a WR near the sideline in the dirt.

Saw a thread on another site where they broke down the missed throws....the middle was open all day. Morris is making his reads pre-snap, he's locking in. It was pretty clear on a lot of those throws. The line was giving him enough time. On the throw to Dorsett along the sidelines when Dorsett was blanketed and out of bounds he had Walford running a deep in open. He never looked. Same thing on the pick....he had Waters on the other side open in the middle. Look back at the game and find ONE throw where it was a second read.

As far as defense, I was really impressed. We gave tons of different looks, 4-3, 3-4...brought blitzes from different places. Driskell was confused. He got lucky on a couple of long balls and that's why he ended up with 300yds. We also got pressure with 4 and even 3 while maintaining our lanes and not letting him scramble. It was night and day from last year. This is a top 20 defense if they play like that all season. Also, no Bush.....so there is room to improve.

Completely agree here. Stephen struggles going through his progressions.

on the show tonight, golden said a few interesting things. first, he said that he believes they went too conservative. the way it was phrased, he was in on it and it was his call. second, he said that morris' interception was his fault because he called/sanctioned the call or the type of play and he believes in retrospect it was the wrong call. and third, he says the next few weeks and games are an opportunity for the freshman to get some game time in preparation for the ACC schedule.

If he hadn't had those drops against FAU he would have got more burn Saturday and would've helped a ton.

Coley - new offensive coordinator. He is new to the players and them to him...their strengths/weaknesses/tendencies, etc. His first game, ever, calling plays was last week. His second game, ever, calling plays was against a very good D.

IMO, gotta give him a little more time to get acclimated to these players and calling plays. Granted, he had fall camp and a good amount of practices...but I think we'll see more continuity (and better results) pretty soon. Savannah St. and usf hopefully should help foster some of this time and continuity.

This!

That's why I don't get why everyone is dogging Coley. Coley was calling a good game until Golden put the clamps on the offense. Since it worked out can't really complain.

No disrespect to Sav. State, but we have two - really - three weeks off to get guys healthy and work on the offense. I'm not worried. Not yet at least.

Someone is going to have to show me this tape where Morris had a ton of time and WRs were running wide open.

he was off on 3 passes to dorsett. one was the when dorsett was running up the sideline that was nearly picked off. a second one was an adjustment when the corner or outside LB blitzed and the third one was on the 3 and 25 and dorsett ran a long route with a sudden stop at the first down marker. it was thrown 10 feet over his head. however, there was some discussion that the ball might have been tipped. there could have been a few more. i think he's playing a bit off.

There was also a simple curl to Dorsett with the DB playing way off and Morris threw it over his head. Should have been an easy first down. His accuracy issues are still there. He looks amazing at times but then goes through crazy droughts where his footwork and mechanics just aren't there.

I will say I am shocked that we have not ran one screen to Duke to 2 games. Screens to the backs were a huge part of our game last year and we had a lot of success doing it. Surprised Coley has taken that out of the offense.
