Lu and DMoney: Thoughts on the Offense?

Lu or anyone else who dissected or analyzed the game a 2nd time:

How would you grade Flowers? I caught the replay last night starting late in the 2nd quarter and while I was doing several things and watching the NFL games, it seemed that he fared poorly each offensive play I watched.

On one play, UF's end used him like a sled and drove him back easily and Morris, sensing pressure, had to release ball much quicker than he wanted resulting in errant pass.

Next play - from shotgun - he whiffed on block and Duke had to chip that rusher inside leaving a second blitzer (had Flowers not whiffed on his guy, Duke would have likely chipped) with a free lane to Morris again resulting in incomplete pass.

Then, on the long Clements run that was called back, he was flagged for holding.

In the few plays I saw, he did not look good. Looked overmatched physically.

That wasn't holding on the Clements run.

In any case, he's struggled in space moreso than I thought he would. Doing more leaning that I had seen from his last year. I'm not an OLine guy, but some of the other guys (GoGeta, Courcy, etc.) would probably tell you he was off balance on Saturday. He actually looks a lot like a RT playing LT right now, but I think he still has time. I keyed on the OL in my second watch. It was an ugly day, obviously, but it was scary how often those 1 on 1 battles were lost. Your observations are a microcosm of the entire day. What caught me off guard was Feliciano. He had a rougher day than I thought he would.

that was an awful awful call. There was nothing there and it was a crippling call for our offense. We desperately needed a big play and that put us inside the UF 30.

Disagree with both Terd and NFC. Again, I didn't watch every play, but the passing plays I did watch Morris had little to no time to throw. I think he was very uncomfortable back there. I'm not excusing his performance, but I think the OL ought to shoulder a little more blame for the poor performance. (That said, UF's DL is just nasty.)

gee NorthFlaCane I wonder what causes those bad throws and only watching his primary receiver? Could it be that the gatahs defense was actually penetrating our backfield literally anytime the wanted to? That's why duke had 59 yards for the entire game, and when we did crack a good play it was called back for holding, it's because they collapsed our o-line WITH EASE.

I just rewatched every ******* pass play, he was not under pressure on every play or even close to that

Morris was rattled before the game started. He must have had nightmares from ESPN building up the SEC teams.

re-watch every play then - Morris had enough time on most plays, especially for a senior QB that is supposed to have NFL aspirations

He was uncomfortable. And he was under pressure on a number of plays. But the guy's a senior qb, with lots of experience and aspirations of playing in the nfl. He can't let some pressure on some plays rattle him on ALL the plays. He needs to have better pocket presence and the ability to stand in the pocket and go through his reads on the plays the OL gives him time. He wasn't doing that.

Don't disagree, Terd. But I think NFC is stretching when he says he had "enough time on most plays." That was not what I watched (from my sample size).

EDIT: Regardless, play by both Morris and OL has to improve.

We scored 21 on a real good SEC defense, including 2 TD passes. When was last time a gator gave up two like that. One took the top off secondary--no easy task. If we have all 11 men on field on the one long gator TD, we might be talking a 21 - 9 trip to woodshed. Even in glory days our offense had its ups and downs, especially against top D's with speed. With D playing like this, we have until 11-2 - 13 for O to get a lot better. If we had gotten up 14 on ND last year, might had been different game. I'll leave the x and o stuff to the guys who know it. D brought pain Saturday; I'm real good with that. O scored every good chance it had and did not back down an inch in the slugfest; I'm good with that. Did Dorsett and Morris miss on a couple, yeah, but 54 yards on TD was a thing of complete beauty. Did Duke get stuffed and beat up after 1 quarter, sure, but they had to put 15 in the box to do it. He gashed them repeatedly in the 1st quarter, never back down a inch in the face of their dirty play, and in the end cut their heart out going unfriggin touched into the endzone for the winning score.

After watching Mark's year 3 defense on Saturday, can we really doubt the Golden has a plan and it is working. He wants a NC fore these kids as bad as we want one for ourselves. They walked the walk while other only talked the talk. Man has been on a mission in overdrive since the second the NCAA hearing ended this summer. Might be drinking the cool-aid, but it taste like gator blood to me with just the hint of elephant blood.

i agree with NFC. morris was definitely rattled, and threw some panic passes when he had the time to properly read the field. wonder if they told him in practice to get the ball out faster, 1-2 reads, and not chance it with the UF DL? might be what golden meant when he said on the radio miami decided to be a little too conservative this game.

that's what this thread is for. there are plenty of threads where people can have fun being casual, excited fans. this thread is for people who want to analyze the game.

I knew Florida could bring it on defense, but I was still disappointed with the play of our OL. They need to step up in a major way for us to reach the level I feel we can get to.

Technically we scored 21, but it was really 14 because the last one was gifted wrapped by the defense for us. We did well in the first and then they adjusted and we had no answer whatsoever for them. We won so its all good but the offense could not give us anything. We could not make a play to extend a drive just so we could give the defense, a unit that was giving its all and more, a breather. Morris is our 5th year QB and he just could not make a play, not one, sure he was pressured most of the game but not every play. Look at our numbers after the first quarter. Now yes they were a good defense but you have to look at the bigger picture and notice there is a pattern. We score in bunches on average to below average teams, and struggle mightily against the better defenses. KState was different because we were behind from the jump, but FSU, UF, ND, and yes UNC were all games that we were in and our offense just could not make a play in the second half.

I understand not scoring a ton of points on their defense, but we need to reduce the number of 3 and outs - It's leaving the defense on the field too long and in poor field position

Pretty much. We did it a ton last year and it has to improve.

Morris' streakiness makes Jacory look consistent.

Our oline seems to have a problem locking on guys. Its not just one player either. A ton ended up on the ground play after play as their man was in the backfield making plays. Feliciano looked like crap but so did our Center a number of times. I dont know if its been mentioned but Seantrel seemed to be on of the few who played well (in comparison to others). Also found it interesting that when the chips are down, Seantrel starts and doesnt rotate much at all

We need Rashawn Scott playing, that's one guy that seems to get what Morris is doing. I think other guys are more talented, but it doesn't matter if you don't turn your head to look for the pass.

I don't care what anyone says, the excuses they bring to the table.

Their defense is being praised in here, like this is ESPN In Sight.

They should have never been in the game period

The tempo we came out with in the 1st had them sucking wind as if it was the 4th qtr. Easley was pulling a Clowney hanging on the sideline looking like a *****.

They should have been out of it by half, and been forced out of their ball control offense, and made to play how we wanted them too.

Their mighty defense was nowhere to be found, until our QB took his leave after 2 TD in the 1st. That is Morris, not Coley, cause this **** stemmed back to last season with Fisch. He shows up for certain qtrs and then disappears and allows the other team to stay in the game.

Miami OL held Florida's 4-man (or less) pass rush to affecting QB on just 15.8% of dropbacks. Would have been best of any team last year.

On designed passes, we had Clive lined up on the outside over Lewis and coley. I wonder if Lewis isn't fully recovered, or if it's something else. I would like to see coley and Lewis out there more. I'm sure coley will get more time as the year goes on.

Hurns doesn't provide a deep threat, but he catches everything and is consistent. You know what he brings to the table every game.

Miami OL held Florida's 4-man (or less) pass rush to affecting QB on just 15.8% of dropbacks. Would have been best of any team last year.

Morris has never showed the type of poise in the pocket I would like to see. He gets too jumpy even when it's not necessary. Don't think that'll change at this point

LuCane, gotta disagree with you. Not being biased but i watched my boy the whole time and thought he did well. He allowed zero pressures. Moved his guy off their spot during running plays and made some nice cut blocks. I did see him whiff pretty bad one time though.
