Kyron Drones as a potential option (not in portal)

Crazy seeing a ton of positive takes on Drones after all the dumping that took place on Beck, Ewers, and Mendoza. A lot can change in a few weeks.
It’s 1:55am and the bar is closing at 2:00am.

May uninformed opinion, I still think there is also still time with Milroe, Ewers, and Beck. The last two more likely since they’re probably day 3 picks, and we’d probably overpay to shore up the position.

No doubt. Emory played in our bowl game and a bunch of us saw that the previous comments about staff being happy with his development and liking what they have was bull****. Dude didn’t get a lick better.

The right side of the line should be very strong. Mauigoa is a beast and Cooper is solid (despite him taking a slight step back in this season). I’m not completely sold on the left side of the line yet. Bell has had some shaky moments.
Yeah I’ve said this a few times already but I know some people that are good with OL and over the summer the consensus was Bell was a year away but he could be really really good. So I think we saw some lumps especially early on but yeah hopefully he takes that step

Left guard is a weird one for sure. The staff is sky high on McCoy but it would be nice to see someone like Kinsler step up there

I’ll also be curious to see if Mauigoa gets a look and pushes for LT. Bell seems like a RT to me anyway

We won't have a proof of concept until we prove we can do it a second time with someone not named Cam Ward. What we have is a pathway through which we can show prospective QBs what the end of the pathway looks like. But right now it's just concept.

I don't disagree on the money and opportunity. Still, all of those things are there, while the results are not.

And to say the QB class is not as good as last year's is a cop-out. Last year, there was a serious drop-off after Ward, at least in regards to individual ability (I am not knocking what Will Howard did with an amazing Ohio Taint team).

This year, there is a serious drop-off after Mateer, who might have been able to replicate something close to what Ward did this past year if he had chosen Miami. There will be a couple of guys who find "right situation" just like Will Howard did.

Essentially, last year's QB class and this year's QB class are nearly identical, with any "last year superiority" being due to the individual greatness of Cam Ward, and not because of the overall QB class.
“We“ as in Dawson do have proof of concept. Look at Clayton tune before Dawson and after like canes chief posted

Look at all the WR in Dawsons offense.

I do not understand how people think these things correlate to programs historically rather than the coaches who actually impact things

Man, I disagree with most of what you said here. Respectfully, lets not go back and forth for pages. I'll simply respond.

-In most cases in football and in life, one doesn't need a second proof of concept. We're shown the pathway...that this operation can turn you into a Top 5 player in the NFL Draft. Mario has done it twice with Herbert and now Cam Ward. Its not just a concept of a plan. If this + the good (usually highest and best) money isn't our first foot forward with these players...I'm not sure what to say. Those are our best attributes.

-Subjectively, the transfer portal was far superior at QB in 2024 than 2025. I personally don't think its close. I don't even like using the portal rankings for individuals - because it has Mateer rated a .95, but had Ward a .94 and Ward is a superior prospect not even using hindsight.

But on the whole...Objectively, 247 has 25 QBs rated .90 or better in 2024, with only 10 at .90 or better from 2025. That could change still with these bowl and playoff games still to conclude, but its a weak crop however you look at it. Two of those transfer QBs just broke career records this year with Ward and Gabriel. You don't have these really long career players in there like there was last year either. Will Howard, Riley Leonard, Will Rogers, played a ton of college ball in the P5. Kurtis Rourke led a playoff team, too with a ton of good starts under his belt before he got there.

Jacolby George 1,600+ yards 16 TDs
X 2,300+ yards 17 TDs

Young and Horton basically had the same production in 2023/2024 (600 yards 5 TDs)

That’s some pretty **** good WR production in 2 years for guys that were not heavily recruited

Once again? Think it ended up ok last year.
How about TVD, Jacurri, Emory, Judd? Judd will never take a snap here. It’s looking like Emory won’t be neither even though the staff believes in him. Luke won’t be ready against ND.

We missed on other QB’s this portal. If Drones is the best we can do after Cam then we are in trouble.

WTF is this staff doing?

so Beck and Milroe both declared for the draft,

but in your uninformed opinion they will come to Miami instead...

My theory is that Mario has been aggressively pursuing big fish like Mateer, and that’s why we haven’t settled on a guy like Mendoza yet.

We’re still going after larger fish, so there’s not a need to pull the trigger on guys like Drones just yet.

I may or may not have sources.

TVD? I didn’t mind playing him. He came out hot first 4 games last year and this fan base was rejuvenated by it. And Emory was supposed to come with Rashada.

I think we should let Drones play out before we say if we’re in trouble or not.

Yeah I agree. Just think Milroe is the scarier QB of the two. I think ND would be really worried about facing Milroe and less concerned with Drones.
I tend to agree with you. I don’t know how much you can improve, but I do know that Jalen hurts was worse than him passing wise at Alabama before he transfers to Oklahoma and got fixed.

Not a fan of Drones because how bad he was this year but after digging a little bit, seems that was probably mostly how bad the team around him was.

In 2023 he was much better which is what put him in preseason awards watch lists including the Davey O'Brien and Heisman.

In 2023 he was:
166/285 passing (58.2%. so definitely needs to improve there)
2084 yards (7.3ypa)
17 TDs, 3 INTs
137.2 rating

Also added rushing stats:
166 carries for 818 yards (4.9ypc)
5TDs

An improved version of 2023 Drones could absolutely do damage in an offense with:
Better coaching
Better OL
Better receivers
Better RBs

He had a big dropoff in '24 which is concerning but obviously there's some talent to work with based on 2023.

Drones was big time injured this year while he was playing.
