Kyron Drones as a potential option (not in portal)

My theory is that Mario has been aggressively pursuing big fish like Mateer, and that’s why we haven’t settled on a guy like Mendoza yet.

We’re still going after larger fish, so there’s not a need to pull the trigger on guys like Drones just yet.

I may or may not have sources.

Your theory is the only one that makes sense. That and the fact they truly believed they were getting Mateer so didn’t have much of a plan B in place. Either way, clock is ticking.

Everybody that thinks Drones wouldn’t kill it here, I question your football knowledge. No he is not Cam, but if Dawson knows what he is doing he could cook something up with Drones easily. The offense would look completely different and still be dynamic.
I always enjoy a good debate - but i never liked the broad strokes "you don't know football" posts, especially when we see example after example of even the best talent evaluators being wrong. Projections are theoreticals, nothing more. There is no right or wrong today.

If you break down film, show specific examples, etc...that's a good starting point of football knowledge. If others disagree and have their own arguments and examples, how can you claim they don't know what they are talking about just bc it's different than? You actually need to see it proven as FACT, not theoretical, before you can speak in certainties like that...and even then other variables could have impacted it from coach to system to injury.

Or....better yet....both sides could be right? Drones has skills that COULD translate and kill it and lacks skills that COULD result in failing to improve. Plenty of examples of QBs who improved, regressed, or stayed the exact same in different systems or as they got older.
- Milroe regressed from Tommy Rees to DeBoer/Sheridan, a system that elevated Penix from mediocrity to NFL R1.
- Hurts couldn't elevate his game at Bama but did at OU under Riley.
- Riley Leonard? Almost identical stats as a senior at ND vs as a sophomore at Duke. Game did not elevate even if the team talent and wins did.

Coach, scheme, fit, work ethic, maturity, opportunity, luck? All?

Swap Drones into that situation surrounded by all that talent and great offensive mind HC.

Then put Milroe in Blacksburg. I think both would look different.

Situation is as important as anything with qb. If I have more time to pass receivers have longer to get open with bigger throwing windows. Better coaching produces layup completions. Lastly it’s much easier to throw when you know you won’t be pressured. Comparing playing QB at Bama versus VT is silly.

If Mahomes is drafted in Chicago we’re having a different conversation with the trajectory of his career.

Btw I’m not saying Drones will hit the portal or would be great I’d just expect a better version of himself here with this offense / staff. He’s currently coached by a guy that looks like he installs mufflers at Midas. He coaches like it too.

We are at the “it’s 11am at Club space” phase of QB recruiting and the @JHallCanes cocaine and Molly are wearing off.

Is UM even interested? Do we have any idea what this staff is ******* doing as it relates to the QB position that they saw saved their entire season from mediocrity lol
I mean seeing how Mario runs things, do you expect him to be tweeting out daily updates lol?

Gaby and others have said let it play out and that’s all we can really do at this point. I’m sure Mario has some kind of plan just gotta hope it works out.

Hopefully he would have a Hendon Hooker impact

TVD? I didn’t mind playing him. He came out hot first 4 games last year and this fan base was rejuvenated by it. And Emory was supposed to come with Rashada.

I think we should let Drones play out before we say if we’re in trouble or not.
You’re kind of making his point here. When Rashada didn’t come with Emory it was a huge failure to follow that qb class with Judd the following year.

There was nothing we could’ve done with Florida sweeping in late there with Rashada. Judd was a failure should have definitely done better there.

At least Nickel is already on campus and working out with the team ... learning the playbook. Kaaya was NOT an early enrollee, arrived in June, and was given the starting nod. Nickel will have 8 months to get acclimated, work with receivers, have full Spring practice. He should be better prepared than Kaaya was.
Nickel has had Dawson’s playbook shortly after he committed so he should be way ahead of the curve.

Yeah I’ve said this a few times already but I know some people that are good with OL and over the summer the consensus was Bell was a year away but he could be really really good. So I think we saw some lumps especially early on but yeah hopefully he takes that step

Left guard is a weird one for sure. The staff is sky high on McCoy but it would be nice to see someone like Kinsler step up there

I’ll also be curious to see if Mauigoa gets a look and pushes for LT. Bell seems like a RT to me anyway
I thought McCoy did well as a first year starter, but Rivers was better when he played LG. Not a huge surprise. I'm optimistic he'll continue to improve. Think he can be our LT if he sticks around for his final year and Bell moves on account of success.

CiCi has gotten better against the speed rush, but if you're concerned about Bell holding up against the speed rush, I think CiCi would fair far worse against speed rushers on the left side.

I'm more worried about Bell at LT in the run game than the pass game. He got beat a few times by NFL quality pass rushers in his first year. To be expected. He reaches a lot attempting to engage in run blocks and will occasionally whiff completely (like on Fletcher's last carry against ISU) or get beat to the inside then he gets his right arm way outside to compensate. He's lucky he didn't get called for holding a couple of times against ISU. When he engages cleanly and seals the edge it's a thing of beauty and we ran off his backside quite a few times later in the season.

This should be our best pass blocking OL since Mario has been here. I think we're going to look different running the ball as our RB room doesn't have a bully back to replace Martinez yet, Brockermeyer's strength isn't run blocking, and Bell can't pull from the Left side like Rivers could.

Dawson gets the blame for picking Judd over Bailey

Was an easy local choice and they picked another project who shouldn’t be here. And then when they tried getting Bailey, it was too late

But at least they got a good one in Nickel
I agree, but how do we know Judd isn't better than Bailey? he *probably * isn't better than Bailey, but it's not like they both played and we can compare. one sat behind the best qb in the nation, the other played on a team that sucked so it benched their qb

it's likely Judd will never get his chance here, but the point remains
