HS coaching talent moving to ATL

Hope those 100k+ head coach salaries are privately funded. That is a ridiculous amount of money, especially if it's some public school job on taxpayer's dime.

I live in Sandy Springs. Love it here. My only complaint about Georgia HS football is that the schools are constantly moving between classes. Doesn't make sense to me and I don't understand it at all. My kids are at Marist, which is always pretty competitive in football (state finalist this year), but the coach (Alan Chadwick) has been there for 40 years and literally runs a wing-T. Kyle Hamilton of the Ravens went to Marist. Good football here in this state.

More like cost of living in Florida is getting out of hand. There's some other factors too, but that's a big one.

While the cost of living is rising, the high school teaching/coaching salaries have been stuck in the dark ages for decades. As people have pointed out, the head football coach is getting an extra STIPEND of a few thousand dollars. The SALARIES in Florida are terrible, regardless of whether the cost of living is high or low.

Florida head coaches and some assistant coaches at public schools only get a stipend, unless they also work and draw an employee salary at the school in some capacity. Private schools in Florida can pay the coaches more but many don’t pay that much more because the market is so low.

Many good coaches also do off-season training, camps and also coach other sports to supplement their income. Some coaches work at one school and coach at another.

Coaching football in Florida isn’t glamorous and many do it because they love the sport and they love impacting young athletes

Living like a south ga king. 225k for the head coach of Carrollton ain’t too shabby either. Its a little more affordable out there, hour from ATL

No doubt. I work for a publicly-traded company that is headquartered out that way. We also have offices by the Braves stadium in The Battery/Galleria area. I only drive that far west once a year, for our company Christmas party.

But the housing is definitely less expensive. My sister-in-law's sister moved up to Woodstock a few years ago, and now her parents are moving to Canton. We may need a second beltway for ATL soon.

The one I mentioned making $125k got fired last week I coincidentally just found out. He was on the list shared as well.

At those salaries, they won't let a guy stay around long if they aren't winning. Darlington only made it a couple years at Valdosta and he went to the state finals one year.

50-14 in 5 years since he took over and got fired lol

27-28 in the 5 years prior to him.

Wondering if there’s something more going on there

Florida isn’t exactly known for spending money on public schools. Our schools barely have books, let alone money to pay coaches.

The only coaches making six figures here are the private school guys. There’s not a ton of those positions open.

Not disputing you at all, but things must've really changed in the ATL metro. I lived in Tallahassee, but worked and had an apartment in ATL back in the late 90's/early 2000's and it was cheaper to buy a house in ATL than it was in Tally/Jacksonville. Homes in Cobb and Hendry were MUCH less expensive than most neigborhoods in Tally. For instance, a 1700 sqft home in my neighborhood back then was around $110K and I walked through a couple of new 3000 sqft homes in Hendry that were only $135K-$140K. As you mentioned, homeowner's insurance is also a lot more expensive in FL nowadays.
Yeah there has been a surge in people moving into metro Atlanta over the past 30 years. Homes in Atlanta are not expensive relative to Miami, but people are having to move farther from Atlanta to find reasonable housing prices. Again, not relative to Miami, but certainly expensive here now compared to most of the US.

Meanwhile teachers in GA....

It’s not only income, the property tax and homeowner’s insurance rates are just ridiculous in this state now. Some people are starting to pay more in escrow for tax/insieance than the actual mortgage payment.
I’m literally considering the move myself if my rates go any higher.

Nobody wants to pay 2 mortgages for one house.
Don’t move to NY. Insane here. But no one moves here anyway. This state blows. You only live here if your from here.

It's insanely expensive. But 2 mortgages is never a good answer.

I'd go as far to say that most salaries in FL are stuck in the dark ages. When I was in college for engineering/IT back in the 80s, we all talked about needing to leave FL to make more money and then coming back once our salary histories were established. It seemed that FL companies were willing to pay more once you'd made more in other places.
