However, fewer well paying jobs, gentrification and higher costs of living in Florida, we are also seeing changing demographics in areas that are fertile recruiting grounds for the Canes and other programs, especially urban areas like Miami. many high school athletes’ families are relocating to Georgia for better jobs, cheaper housing and a more receptive communities. Travis Hunter is a high-profile example of Florida-born talent families moving out of state (W Palm Beach) to Georgia (Suwanee). There are others too

Y’all can relocate outside Metro Atlanta and find affordable housing. But, Marietta isnt that place, even within the city limits. Lived there when it was affordable 40+ yrs ago, my oldest daughter graduated from Marietta HS. The other things, community and salary, are all good.Salaries have improved, back then I barely made 21k with 9yrs experience and a M.Ed. As a coach and school social worker. But either way getting out of Fla. is a good thing.

I don't comment on these topics much on here, but I agree. I will add a historical wrinkle to Florida, though (which is unique for Florida - other than Texas - as a big state). Unlike other states, Florida's been a one-party state since the late 90's. GOP has controlled the State House since 96', State Senate since 94', and they've had the governorship since 98'. The problems definitely pre-date, but only one party has been running the show here for awhile.

All true. One of my best friends from middle school/high school was a state senator from SoFla, and he retired a few years ago because he was tired of the one-party rule.

All Florida teachers need a $25,000 annual pay raise immediately.. if not sooner, as we say in the Navy.

So, that leads to this little statistic from AI .

Nearly 10,000 public school teacher and staff positions are vacant as the 2024-2025 school year opens, according to Florida Education Association data. Of the 9,842 vacancies, 5,007 are instructional positions and 4,835 are support staff. The number of vacancies is down from 11,992 in August 2023.Aug 16, 2024

As a holder of multiple Florida teaching certificates, I can honestly say that since the 90s the amount of bureaucracy that has been heaped on Florida teachers and their students is purely motivated by political greed. None of it is research-based and demonstrated to be of any benefit to student achievement.
The only people benefiting from public schools in Florida right now are the politicians, their family members and the many useless and unnecessary vendors funneling huge kickbacks to them while administering useless and unnecessary services under the guise of accountability, again, without any proven benefit to student achievement.
Could go on but it's already long enough. Thanks Florida teachers who continue to find a way to service their students despite the challenges. God bless you.

Florida head coaches and some assistant coaches at public schools only get a stipend, unless they also work and draw an employee salary at the school in some capacity. Private schools in Florida can pay the coaches more but many don’t pay that much more because the market is so low.

Many good coaches also do off-season training, camps and also coach other sports to supplement their income. Some coaches work at one school and coach at another.

Coaching football in Florida isn’t glamorous and many do it because they love the sport and they love impacting young athletes

anytime i coached hs ball here it was for free. I literally paid to coach and lost money. I dont work at the schools so just did it out of the love of my alma mater and a friend asking me to help out.

The last time i literally was passing by after work an saw them on the field and stopped quickly just to see how they looked, an old hs teammate noticed me as he was a coach and just said you on the staff i aint taking no for an answer and walked me to the hc who said the same lol

Just curious what is the property taxes like in Florida?

In California, because of Prop 13 (thank god) they are capped. That hinders how much schools get but honestly it wouldn’t matter because any extra money raised from taxes wouldn’t go to sports, the teachers union and politicians would never allow it.

The top coaches are in single high school systems. Metro ATL schools are the lower paid schools and why they have the higher turnover.

We do pay more. Way more in some instances. There are middle school head coaches up here in GA that’s making close to what some FL HS coaches are making. No cap.

Yeah. A lot of dem higher numbers are because its a combination of base teacher pay, local education supplement, advanced degree, then your football coaching supplement, and any “little bits” that the booster club wants to add in. Some of dese coaches up here are pulling in some nice bread.

They all started to ignore school district lines, and recruit like ****. So now there are some schools up there that are fuccin loaded with talent.

If you throw in…lets say a Master Degree, and if you in the right county, yeah… you would get 6 figures. Sone of the smaller counties still allows the head football coach to be the AD, so there’s a supplement for that too

It depends on the county you live in. Some aren't too bad, others are high as ****. If you live within the city limits of the county, that's an additional assessment. Florida residents can "homestead" their primary residence which comes with a $50K deduction of assessed value, along with a 3% cap on any tax increases. Anyone who owns an additional house/property that isn't homesteaded can get hosed on their taxes with no cap on any tax increase.

I loved teaching high school and coaching but the pay is trash. Teachers running out of the buildings as fast as they can, unfortunately.
