I just can't get passed hiring a DC who has never been a DC before even if they've been a HC
I did look up Fitzgeralds resume. And yes never an actual DC but has a lot more experience coaching defense than I expected; a few years coaching db's and a lot more years coaching linebackers so experienced coaching up our two worst position groups at a school in Northwestern where you aren't getting blue chips and can't rely on pure talent. But can he manage the entire unit on that side of the ball ? Maybe, maybe not but I guess anything better than Guidry right ?...............right 🤷 ?

he seems like Manny. comes in has a decent year with other guys players and then it goes down hill plus he doesnt like to recruit.
I think he is to blame for personnel. He's stubborn and ****y. There is a reason Mario wants a former HC at DC. he sees letting Dawson to his thing on offense has worked. He just wants to be a CEO and recruit. He knows his limitations. I'm not defending Mario but there is a reason most of the assistants dont get along with lance.
Guidry is a terrible coach with an awful scheme. All of the signs are there with blinking red lights.

That's why I'm guessing it's one of them by following the clues. My better guess is Fitzgerald would be the guy more so than Tucker. Personally, most of our defensive players probably deserve to get hazed so 🤷
Yes, he is the one who has never been a DC

But he has coached linebackers and db's directly for multiple years each position group so it's not as egregious as it sounds, like we hired Mario's twin who only coached OL to coordinate the defense.

I love Fitz, I'm an NU grad, but I would worry that his system wouldn't fit at Miami. He's Big 10 style, kind of like AL Golden was. Can't say he wouldn't be willing to adjust, but one of the knocks on him as head coach was that he was too conservative too often, and hesitant to move on from assistants he should move on from...things we've already been complaining about here.

Conservative on defense ? What we need most is someone who will bring emphasis on fundamentals and discipline. If he can do that part it's an upgrade but if he really is hesitant to let go of assistants that's no doubt a big worry. It's interesting you brought up Golden as an example cuz that's worked out super well for him becoming a DC.

Everyone I heard is a former HC. He was the most successful. Winning 10 games and competing for conference titles at that program is impressive.
So he’s coming in to replace Mario if he continues to underperform

Gotta be Mel Tucker or Pat Fitzgerald based on this description

Male Tugger would be an absolute homerun DC. He & Mario worked together on that 2015 Alabama National Championship team so there's some connection. We'd probably only have to cover a portion of his salary & at this point he's probably highly motivated to redeem his name.

Sign him up & give him free reign to run this defense...

Ward was amazing this year and put up great numbers and could just barely cover this team’s defensive deficiencies. With Ward gone, it’s going to be a long season next year if nothing changes on the defensive side.

Pat Fitzgerald is not going to work for Mario.

It worked out well at Notre Dame for Golden, but obviously not at Miami. How much of the defense here was his system vs No D, I have no idea.

We get different types of athletes at Miami than at Northwestern/Note Dame. I'm not saying Fitz wouldn't translate well here, I certainly dont know the Xs & Os well enough to say with any certainty. It's just a bit of concern. We had great defenses at NU under Fitz with Mike Hankwitz as DC, but there was a definite drop-off when he retired. Maybe it was because he just didn't want to subvert Jim O'Neil (his new DC), and was more hands off as a result. I do think he would teach fundamentals well, he was a stickler for doing things right.
