Golden still in play at PSU!

I agree he crafts his words very carefully and the guy is very aware of what he says and does in public, which is why I think his comment is TOO definitive. there is no way he can spin "not a candidate" if he interviewed, and then gets an offer after. I mean that is the very DEFINITION of a "candidate".

If you're Al Golden and you want the PSU job but it hasn't been formally offered, what would your statement say?

He had to say SOMETHING.

If he says he doesn't want the job, he's a liar. If he says he didn't meet with them, he's a liar. If he tells the truth and says he's considering the job, he gets his *** fired.

Exactly. Notice he never said "I was never a candidate" or "I won't be a candidate." I know it's parsing words, and I happen to think there's basically no chance of him leaving at this point, but I thought his response was very carefully worded.

On another note, I'm just not clear why, instead of deflecting the questions about the interviews, he didn't say "I did meet with representatives from Penn State, as it's my alma mater, I have great respect for the university and the football program, and out of respect for the university, I felt it proper to discuss the position with them. However, during that discussion, I informed them that I am happy at the University of Miami, feel very positive about the direction of the program, and look forward to the future as the head coach of the Hurricanes. I'm sure that Penn State will find an excellent football coach to fill their head coaching vacancy."

He could have propped up both schools, made it clear that he did meet with them (which everyone already knew), but is happy about where he is. Instead, he sounded like he was hiding something.

Don't set your selfs up with speculation, I hope everyone learned a little something this last weekend. ( Ivan drago voice ) if he goes ,.... He goes

See Art Briles statement when his name was kicked around with the Texas Job. "Despite rumors to the contrary, Im a Baylor Bear".

"Despite rumors in the media, I have not been offered any jobs, I am a Miami Hurricane". That is even MORE emphatic and explanatory than the bullsh*t that Briles put out, and yet it would not be a lie if later he says "I was LATER offered the job, and being my dream job, I accepted".

By saying "I am not a candidate for ANY job", he would flat out be a liar if it later came out that he interviewed, and was waiting for an offer from PSU. That would be a FLAT OUT LIE. No way to spin that.

There are ways to spin things, without flat out lying.

I think its crazy to continue speculating if he is still in play based off a single article. However, he definitely chose his words carefully. "I PLAN on being at the University of Miami."

Of course he is still in the running. PSU could give him 4 million reasons to be a liar. Until the position is filled Golden will be in the running.

"I have no desire to pursue other coaching positions," Baylor coach Art Briles said. "As I've said many times, I am both humbled and honored to be the head coach at Baylor University, and believe we have something special going here. I look forward to leading the Bears onto the field next fall at McLane Stadium and defending our Big 12 championship that our players and coaches worked so hard to win this season.

"There is tremendous excitement for our program's future, and I look forward to many more great seasons at Baylor," he added. "There is tremendous commitment from our University leadership, athletic administration, coaches and student-athletes - it truly is a great time to be a Baylor Bear."

THAT is an example of a statement that gives wiggle room???

I haven't seen this mentioned but I have a hunch. They wanted him.....without Dorito. They were firm.....and he couldn't convince him that he could hire his own coordinators? (remember - they have LJ and he's loved up there)

So, he got his first whiff (in recent years) of the Penn State mafia and of how those boosters run that program and it wasn't exactly the 'dream job' he's made it out to be all these years in his imagination. Just my .02

Per my sources, Golden was never offered. Plain and simple. They allowed him the dignity of "withdrawing from consideration" but he was never offered. Period.

Of course he was never offered. what happened here is clear as glass. Al wanted the job but the PSU committee had no authority to offer it to him. they had to interview others for political as well as due dilligence reasons. Al wanted and demanded an immediate offer as he couldn't afford a prolonged period with the **** storm brewing in miami. basically Al was forced to withdraw from consideration. I like Al golden but he isn't nick saban, les miles or urban meyer. those are the guys you come to see with offer in hand.

I always find this interview process for college coaches a bit ridiculous. Unlike the real world where a prospective employer has nothing to go by except a resume and recommendation, college coaches at major programs are known commodities. Between the talk shows, banquets, social media, and, of course, game performance, there is more than ample information to go off. Only the pseudo-intellectuals who actually take part in these hiring committees really think the interviews are of any use.

They are NOT real interviews, which is why this discussion is silly. The only team you really have an "interview" process, is when the school strikes out with their "wish list" and has to sit down and decide among the viable options. ADs ALWAYS have a "wish list" to go to in the event they need to go after a new coach. UM has had them before, all programs do. If AG was interviewed before any other coaches, that means he had to be right at, or near the top of the PSU wish list. His agent would not have let this speculation swirl, nor would PSU have come all the way down for a meeting with so much media buzz, with no intention of offering him. This isnt a regional sales rep position at Goodyear Tires. They know who AG is. They know his background. They likely had already had preliminary discussions with is agent behind the scenes.

And if this really was his "Dream Job", that he was SO desperately trying to get, why did he bow out? They rejected him right after the interview? Why? He showed up drunk? They came all the way down here and then said "Nah, you know what, your not what we are looking for". Does that make any sense?

That was the formal statement that was issued later though the school. The first comment he made, was "Contrary to rumors, Im a Baylor Bear". And that was DAYS after the newspaper in Austin QUOTED "sources close to Briles" that he was VERY interested in the UT position, and that he would accept it if offered, BUT... they also reported that Strong had also interviewed for the job.

Briles issues a mealy mouth statment on Twitter....... then LATER we get the formal statement through the school, just before Strong is announced as HC.

See, I disagree with you. The media's questions were directed at not only determining whether he is still a candidate, but whether he was ever a candidate. Fans, the media, the team, all wanted to know if it was something that he even considered and if he was still in consideration. While he addressed the 2nd part, he didn't address the first part, despite the fact he acknowledged the speculation which caused him to issue a statement yesterday. So, why not acknowledge what everyone knows and use that opportunity to speak positively about both his alma mater and his current job. Instead, he decided to be evasive and say that as in years past, he won't address it. Where does that get him?

Instead, he decided to be evasive and say that as in years past, he won't address it. Where does that get him?

It gets him exactly where he wants to be. First off, I believe he really does love PSU. I dont think he would say publically, "yeah I turned down the gig, just sounds like too much of a headache, all the NCAA sh8t still going on, I just got over that here, and dont want to deal with it again, and it wasnt enough of a raise, and my wife didnt really dig the thought of moving back to PA". Instead, he does the "gentleman" thing and just says "Im not a candidate". That is usually how this is handled anyway, either when a coach doesnt get a job, or when they turn it down an offer. Saying they spurned an offer would embarass the school and make it look like the job is beneath you, which I dont think Golden would ever do to PSU. Schiano did that to us, and it was humiliating.

If any recruits later are unsure, he can give them the "heart to heart" conversation, "look, I never made a big deal about this, because its my alma mater, and I respect them so much, but I was offered that job, and turned it down, my family and I want to be here, etc".

You're splitting hairs.

"Contrary to rumors, I'm a Baylor Bear" wouldn't preclude anyone from calling him a liar if he later took the Texas job.

Maybe that distinction will pass muster with grammarians, but nobody else.

Also, if Al was forced to make an actual statement, not a tweet but a formal statement, how could he word it without being branded a liar?

And finally, going to such great lengths to phrase the text in a way that doesn't portray as a liar down the road, means you're a liar. You had every intention of leaving, but wanted to get off on a technicality.

This is the nature of the business. All of these coaches have to do the dog & pony show while they're making moves behind the scenes.

Lol we might be the only college in America who wants our head coach to leave while we have a top ten recruiting class coming in. The reality is that it would be best for us as canes for al to leave. As long as no D is on staff we will be mediocre at best.

People could call him a liar, but he has a ready made out. "I was still a Baylor Bear when I made that statement, I had not been offered, NOR accepted ANY jobs at the time". What he would have said was true. Again, it was DAYS after the MAIN newspaper in Austin, QUOTED "sources close to Briles" saying he was very intersted, and would accept the job at UT. And as late as early Friday, all Briles says is "Im a Baylor Bear"? That could easily be construed as "I havent currently accepted any other jobs as of now". And the big "Im staying" statement doesnt come out until just before we hear that Strong got the Texas job.

I dont think it was meant as a long term "cover" but to buy time. Look, I get it. There is nothing wrong with listening to a better offer, and nothing wrong with someone that is sought after, from moving up the career ladder in their profession. But in this business, people get very touchy too. Perception is important. So these things are always handled very delicately. Its like the VP search in a presidential election. No one wants to say "Oh I was a finalist but got rejected". Same thing here, no coach wants to admit they are considering another job, nor do most programs want to make an offer to a coach and publically be rejected. So there is a lot of doublespeak, and vague denials, and mealy mouth comments designed to give people wiggle room. Its just the nature of the beast.

Im sure your right, and Baylor people would have been livid at Briles for leaving, BUT, would the media have crucified him as a "liar"? Like they did Saban for example? If all he said was "Despite rumors, Im a Baylor Bear", and later said, well, I hadnt been offered the job at that point, so it was true. Fans would always be disappointed and ****ed, but I still think he could thread the needle.

With Golden's statement, not just So Fla, but nationally I think the media will call him a flat out liar if he turns around and now accepts an offer. There are many things he could have said, but he specifically said "I am NOT a candidate for any jobs". Meaning he is out of contention, either by his own choice, or it was made for him, but that does not leave much wiggle room.

I wonder what happens if Blake James just fires D'Onofrio anyway. What does Golden do? Threaten to leave to Penn State? He can pound sand and we'll help him out the door.

Have to see if the contract allows us to fire his coaches without it being a breach of contract.

In a moment of weakness we allowed this guy to get WAY too much leverage.

There is no way that an AD would fire an assistant coach like that against the HCs wishes unless it was for cause, or a clear violation of their contract/employment terms. Getting arrested, or doing something unethical. Just being a "sorry @ss coordinator" isnt grounds to ignore the HC and fire his staff members. What HC would want to coach at a school that micromanaged his staff?

And if anyone says "Good I hope it makes Golden leave" you should consider driving your car up to 120 MPH, and throwing your self out of it til the skin flakes off your body, because its not just about Golden, but any future coaches too.
