I agree he crafts his words very carefully and the guy is very aware of what he says and does in public, which is why I think his comment is TOO definitive. there is no way he can spin "not a candidate" if he interviewed, and then gets an offer after. I mean that is the very DEFINITION of a "candidate".
If you're Al Golden and you want the PSU job but it hasn't been formally offered, what would your statement say?
He had to say SOMETHING.
If he says he doesn't want the job, he's a liar. If he says he didn't meet with them, he's a liar. If he tells the truth and says he's considering the job, he gets his *** fired.
Exactly. Notice he never said "I was never a candidate" or "I won't be a candidate." I know it's parsing words, and I happen to think there's basically no chance of him leaving at this point, but I thought his response was very carefully worded.
On another note, I'm just not clear why, instead of deflecting the questions about the interviews, he didn't say "I did meet with representatives from Penn State, as it's my alma mater, I have great respect for the university and the football program, and out of respect for the university, I felt it proper to discuss the position with them. However, during that discussion, I informed them that I am happy at the University of Miami, feel very positive about the direction of the program, and look forward to the future as the head coach of the Hurricanes. I'm sure that Penn State will find an excellent football coach to fill their head coaching vacancy."
He could have propped up both schools, made it clear that he did meet with them (which everyone already knew), but is happy about where he is. Instead, he sounded like he was hiding something.
