Golden still in play at PSU!

Golden is looking like Penn State's only viable option at this point. None of the other guys seem to really want the job (Schiano, Munchack, Franklin.) Whether he was offered the job or not it starting to look irrelevant because if they can't get one of their more preferred candidates, they will come back to Golden, hat in hand, and try to lure him away.

Why wouldnt Munchank want the job? Isnt he currently unemployed? Why would a dude with no current job turn down an over 3 million dollar a year job at a big time football program as HC?

I believe He wanted it.

He couldn't afford to be left in limbo once he found out they were gonna follow protocol and interview more coaches.

He issues a non-committal statement to break the silence and get him through his media obligations.

If PSU comes with a concrete offer this week, Golden goes.

I dont think so. Not impossible, but that would then make him a FLAT OUT LIAR. He said he was "not a candidate", if he interviewed and they then come an offer and he takes it, that is a flat out lie then. He will have lied to everyone. Not his style IMO. I think he would have said something different if that was still open.

The hatred some of you have with Coach Golden is awful. The man has held this program firm over the darkest days the university has faced and yet many of you want to rejoice his departure. Guess what, it's not happening.

He crafts his words very carefully, and is extremely mindful of public perception. Technically, he can claim he wasn't a candidate after meeting with them and leaving without an offer.

My biggest issue with Al is his inability to put the program above his friendship with Dorito. In most situations that is a commendable characteristic, but when it comes to business its a red flag.
If Coach D wasn't his friend he would have been fired at the conclusion of last season.
That is my biggest issue.

I agree he crafts his words very carefully and the guy is very aware of what he says and does in public, which is why I think his comment is TOO definitive. there is no way he can spin "not a candidate" if he interviewed, and then gets an offer after. I mean that is the very DEFINITION of a "candidate".

Your point is well taken. But he felt pretty boxed in on the timing. He could not return to Miami, do interviews, and press conferences, without stating he was not in contention for the PSU job. Saying "I'm not a candidate" is currently truthful, and it shuts down the follow-up questions from the local media. That is all he needs right now.

But if Munchak declines, Golden will be the pick.

He will quickly accept, and depart Miami, where he won't face questions about the circumstances of leaving UM. it will just be about what he's going to do at PSU. That said, if he does get a question about stating that he was not a candidate, he'll just respond: "I was not a candidate on Sunday/Monday; thereafter, my beloved alma mater contacted me, and offered me an opportunity that I have always dreamed about .... blah, blah, blah."

Then he'll decline to talk about UM anymore, pulling out his patented, "I'm focused on moving forward, and preparing this team to return to its rightful spot atop CFB."

agree 100% except for the part about next week. i don't believe he will take it if they come. he had to go all in with miami for the press conference and now he has kids enrolling.

Who knows, but like I said during and before, I think it's better for everyone at this point.
