This thread would not be complete without bringing in the third and fourth components: our receivers and our pass protection. How many times did we watch receivers - AJ in particular - run the wrong route or better still not even run the route but sort of trot it? How many times did we watch teams line up in what was an obvious blitz package and the hot read forget that he was supposed to look back at the QB? Then there was the horrible pass protection. Horrible in part because we were often in obvious passing situations with a nervous wreck QB, gunslinger OC, and wide receivers who often seemed lost. I harken back to the game up in Charlottesville, VA when the University of Virginia trotted out their JV team, ran like five plays all game (just ran them repeatedly and efficiently), and we laid an egg. First win over a D-1 opponent in forever if memory serves. I watched AJ give no effort during that game. It was so obvious the Canes in my section were asking why the &ell he was still in the game. We made that defense look like the Baltimore Ravens. Then they came down this past season, clearly a better team than the year before, and they beat us again. Being an old school Cane it has taken tremendous fortitude to watch my beloved program over the past decade. Better days ahead.
