I’m not sure how people can’t get the difference between mentioning that something is the first “x”once a hire is done in a bio versus hiring somebody because they are the first “x”
I’m also kind of confused that some of you apparently don’t know the difference between Mexico and Cuba as if being Mexican in South Florida is the Hispanic you want to be because they’re all the same….
Pox on your houses for making me even on one level have to defend him when I’m so glad he’s gone but bs is bs (being kind just using bs) and needs to be called out.
If you are directing your comments at me, I'm happy to respond. If you're making general comments regarding most who mentioned "Latin," then ok and disregard.
I can't speak for everyone, but I do see the difference in the first comment you made. It wasn't "mentioned" though; it was promoted by the University. Do I thnk Frenk was hired because he is Mexican/Latin? No. Do I think it helped? Maybe. When the University promoted that he was the first Latin hire at University president, it didn't confirm that it helped or was a considerationin the hiring process; nor did it refute that concept. Is it a big deal? To me, no not really. To some, yes I guess.
Defending his ethnicity and Frenk as a person is quite different than defending him as University president. I hope you see that. If I have offended you, I do apologize. I also feel like discussions like this are beneficial if both sides listen to the other with the intention on listening to understand, rather than listening to respond or defend. I used the term race earlier in this thread. I was corrected. The proper term is ethnicity. I'm grateful for the gentleman (ok, that might be a stretch - joke) who pointed that out to me. I had never really thought about it lke that before. Shame on me? Eh, not really but it was a learning moment.
Isn't this sort of how it should be? And I get it, you don't "know" me; you just know my internet persona as Mr. Cincinnati.
I hope this puts this to rest, at least from me. If there's more that you'd like to add - especially if I'm missing something - feel free to direct message me. I meant for this response to be completely respectful, so if you did not receive it that way, please do let me know.
