For those bashing our defensive staff for not closing...

Why stop playing when there’s time on the clock? Recruiting is crazy.

I remember when we used to bash our staff for not being persistent enough. The important thing here is that we kept recruiting Martin Emerson. We didn’t put all our eggs in the TS basket.

Come on D. You can continue to recruit the kid and not do stuff like that. You know that's not a good look. Same way with that Jobe crap. Or with Rumph wishing kids well AFTER they committed elsewhere. Seriously man, I get you want to be positive, but is there ANYTHING with regards to recruiting with the current group that you'd criticize? In a nutshell you're saying their only problem was the offense sucked. Water is coming through more than one hole in this sinking recruiting boat.

James Coley was the lead recruiter for Tyrique Stevenson. Joe Pannunzio was the lead recruiter for Khris Bogle. I guess they got a lot better at recruiting since they left Miami.

Today wasn’t about individual coaches “whiffing.” It was about a program that needs to regain its respect on the field.

Not to mention the coach that recruited Bogle for 2 years here is now the coach at Bama. Hard to judge in this situation. Especially when Tyrique signed Richt was still the coach and manny was at Temple. People forget he signed the Friday of the early signing period, not yesterday, he just made his signature public yesterday.

My big knock on the defensive recruiting has been LB. I don’t like what we’ve done there and have said it several times. We all know the issues with Kool and the DL. I like Jess’s approach much better.

In general, I think our defensive staff is the least of our concerns. They know what they are doing and they got immediate results on a defense that was brutal to watch for a decade. We need some perspective on that.

I disagree, yes winning helps to grab elite talent, ie Bama Ohio St, but look at the rivals top 25 class rankings, Nebraska FSU Oregon Tenn USCw USCe Arkansas

Guys aren’t going there because they are winning 10 games. They are going there because Miami has the worst group of recruiting coaches I can ever remember.

Players want to get to the league, they don’t care about having a young coach they can “relate to”

Our two best recruiters on the entire team are gone (Hartley Dugans). We need some absolute snipers to help the offense or expect the same going forward.

What SFL kid is gonna get excited about being coached by Patke the intern? That hire still ****es me off

The net must be casted wider. More backup plans at all Positions

You hit the nail on the head. We seem to put all our eggs into one basket and when we whiff, we scramble.

A better strategy would be to continue contact with the multiple Plan A's so if you miss one you don't miss a beat. If anything, I hope Diaz learned this lesson.

What would have you rather have seen from the LB recruiting?

Oh I definitely have perspective. In no way am I saying the offensive side isn't a major contributor. I'm just saying I don't think it's that simple. I think there are numerous things that impact recruiting and if we only worry about plugging one hole another hole is still going to bring on water.

We need to figure out how to recruit in spite of, especially in the short term. For example I fully expect us to lose 4 games next year, including the opening game to our bitter rival. Will Coach Diaz and crew be able to recruit in spite of that? Kirby Smart lost 5 games his first year including losses to Vandy at home and to Ga Tech. He still pulled a top 3 class. Malzahn has lost less then 4 games only once in his tenure at AU (his very first season) and yet they continue to recruit well (oftentimes with kids that we don't even offer ). You got people like Luke who despite what some on here want to say has his ear on the pulse of the community already talking about the "type" of coaches that Diaz seems to be interested in. Just my opinion, but it's just way more to it than win and they will come.

When he was our QB coach, we signed Brad Kaaya (unknown at the time of his commitment), Malik Rosier and Evan Shirreffs.

Maybe he is a better recruiter. Maybe not. His results at Miami don’t suggest it.

DMoney cmon man! Coley has been around. He can close better than anyone UM has on its staff, the dude is very familiar with the SFL recruiting landscape. Even Richt wanted to keep Coley but didn't want to surrender play calling. Banda can't go toe to toe with Coley at this point in his career.

I don’t like the two-year haul of Jennings, Steed, Wilder and Joyner.

Joyner is huge and could end up at DE permanently. Wilder unfortunately has to deal with a neck injury. Jennings and Steed still need to take the next step.

It’s not easy to recruit studs with Shaq/Pickney entrenched but I would have liked us to take a couple more run-and-hit developmental guys.

Continuing to recruit a low three-star from Pensacola (Emerson) is not some silver lining in the wake of missing on our top defensive target. We're in this position because of several misfires/misreads at safety, not just Stevenson.

- Jordan Battle flipped from OSU to Bama on signing day, but this staff was rightfully hammered for failing to prioritize him earlier. Early eval should've made him a Plan A target.
- Gant was prioritized over Battle in the early stages, but he has stuck with FSU.
- We flipped Cornelius Nunn, but then lost him right back to Syracuse.
- This staff continued pushing for Mark-Antony Richards to play safety for entirely too long, even though he's made it clear since the beginning that he wants to play RB. Now finally being recruited to play offense.

It's just as bad at CB.

- Lost the battles for Stevenson/Dent.
- We were rightfully hammered for not prioritizing Elam until it was way too late. Similar to Battle. Sensing a theme here.
- Steele was a top target in the spring/early summer, but he never OV'd and ended up signing with UF.
- We coveted Renardo Green early in the process, but he has stuck with FSU.
- Brownlee flipped to FSU.
- We decided to pass on Jaden Davis, even he's good enough to sign with a team that has made the CFB playoff in back-to-back years (OU).
- After missing our top guys, we also lost John Dixon to South Carolina.
- We accepted the commitment from Damarius Good back in May, but pushed him out despite not having a replacement on board. Whether it was a poor early eval or a poor decision to push him out, this is straight up bizarre.

Nunn left because three of his friends got killed in one month. Our defensive staff recruited MAR harder and earlier than anyone. If anyone mismanaged that, it was the HC and the offense. As for Battle, I am on record that we should’ve offered earlier but it wouldn’t have made a difference.

Te'Cory Couch and Keontra Smith are terrific players. They legitimately belong in any Miami class.

But to have just 1 quality CB and 1 quality safety signed, considering the boatload of *****-ups that keep happening with DB recruiting the last few years, is nowhere near good enough. This is far bigger than just losing the Stevenson battle, it's an accumulation of a comedy of errors.

Why should we expect anything to change in 2020 with top targets like Henry Gray (already decommitted), Jaiden Francois (already decommitted), Avantae Williams (already decommitted), Lejond Cavazos, and other blue-chip DBs with Banda & Rumph staying for a fourth year?
