First Scrimmage Thread - BOOM

A true freshman is neck and neck with a fifth year senior...go with the freshman because the year of experience will only make him and the team better going forward.

This...but Alfraud will go with Heaps and ensure himself the "first year QB" excuse for next season. Why else would you start Heaps? Sure, we may take some lumps with Kaaya, but if the kid shows flashes, recruits will still jump on board. But naaaah, Golden needs to buy himself another year after he **** Cannes his BFF after the defense falls flat for the third straight year. Just sayin'...

If Golden wanted to make an excuse, he'd go with Kaaya as he can use the "freshman QB" excuse for next year.

If Heaps is the starter, then Al is going all in for this year.

Miami's defense was active in the team's first scrimmage of #CanesCamp. The Hurricanes had seven pass deflections (four at the line of scrimmage), six tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble that was recovered by junior Tyriq McCord.

The Canes defense was particularly good on third down, routinely stopping the offense and getting off the field thanks to a combination of pressure on the quarterback, good coverage and sure tackling.

THIS is what i'm hopeful & excited about

Me too.
There were so many times last season this team allowed first downs on third down. Heck this team gave up too many first Downs on fourth Down too.
If we can just clean that up a bit this year this team is going to be successful.

Still don't understand this Ryan Williams was poised for great year thing, the guy couldn't get on the field over a hobbled, bad decision making train wreck...

I wonder if Heaps is better than Ryan Williams. No disrespect to him but if so his injury could be a blessing in disguise

I'm of the mindset that Williams and Heaps are probably interchangeable. The sad thing is that Olsen isn't markedly better than Jake-Ryan Heapswilliams. Me thinks if he actually were that the suspension would have been more Bobby Bowden-esque.

I hope this is true. I wasn't much of a Williams fan early on but it was pretty clear he had been working hard and his arm strength was coming around. I think he could have had a very solid year for us. Heaps is a complete wildcard to me. I don't think he's lived up anywhere near his early hype of course but he also isn't near as bad as some here think based off his Kansas days. I dunno. Really have no clue what to expect. I just think Williams was more of a "we know what we have" guy

I'd agree with this. I mean I wanna believe in Kaaya right now as much as anyone too but if we're being honest- nobody here has seen anything close to an adequate sample size from any of these guys to be firmly entrenched in one guy's camp. Heap's tape from Kansas is about as valuable as Williams' limited snaps here and his tape from Memphis. Again, I've already submitted an application to be president of the Kaaya Fan Club too but we're also all lathered up about him as a result of a few Vines and a week's worth of Tweets.

Glad to hear we were doing well rushing the passer. The Dline is key. If they perform well, we're all good.

Typical ultra secret bs we're used to over the last decade. When you're good, you let the media and fans in. When you're not, this is what you get.

What's the advantage of letting fans/media in?

Any chance you get, you allow both in to build relationships with the public and start building hype for the upcoming season. We used to do this more when we were playing lights out, then it was locked down. I doubt any of the super secret practices have resulted in a win and all the paranoia about the guy in the bushes recording things is silly.

If FSU has always done this under Jimbo, obviously that's been his way all along. Bowden let people see them all the time and basically had the idea of here we are, try and stop us.

More access today through pictures or internet, that's a given. As fans, yes Al has been a bit more accessible compared to Shannon, but not the guys before that. I'm talking about ground level, not as technology has increased, we're using it more.

Now you're just making stuff up. I was in Tallahassee during Bowden's best years and very close to the athletic program. He opened up only a few practices to the outside world. The rest were under lock and key. He posted security guards around the entire practice field and had the school erect tarped fences to minimize exposure.

Two attorneys my mother's husband worked with (one was his partner, the other his mentor) used to take a week off yearly to head up there for a week to watch the goings on, so they couldn't have been too buttoned up. While both huge fans of the Noles, I don't believe either was a big time booster, so perhaps things changed. This would've been mid 80's to who at least '93 when I left the area (off to college, start life, etc) and one has since passed while the other we only talk once or twice a year around our matchup or the bowl games. Both great guys and I used to know as much about their team before the season as us until the internet came rolling around.

Johnson made an almost immediate impact once the scrimmage started, juking past two defenders on a 21-yard run to give Miami a first down. On the next snap, the star running back went untouched for 54 yards into the end zone for a touchdown. Johnson also was a threat in the passing game, taking his lone reception of the afternoon for a scrimmage-best 30 yards.[/I]

Lol over 100 yards on three touches. Yup, Duke gon' Duke.

Just think a lot of our fans are in the boat that they would rather take lumps with Kaaya and build for hopeful stardom than sit back with a castoff senior who hasn't done anything to this point. Can't say I blame them but it also might not be the best thing to throw Kaaya to the wolves right away. His time will come this season IMO, but the road opener is awfully sketchy. I know it would be great pregame hype and excitement but not sure it's best for the future.

So, let me ask some of you this, you all seem so timid to start a true freshman at qb, but you would rather start a guy who failed at BYU and Kansas just because of his age? What good is experience if all you ever done at the college level is suck balls? Give me a clean slate and a high ceiling (Kaaya), over someone's soiled garbage (Heaps).

i think what is telling is the lack of QB stats they are releasing from today. putting two and two together it seems neither guy did an outstanding job getting the ball to wide receivers. i don't see any TD's or catch stats from any of our WR's. they mention one pass to coley and how multiple guys caught balls.. that you would expect. but no long pass completions, no TD's, a few ints and a lot of deflections probably means average qb play.

Denzel Perryman was Miami's leading tackler with nine stops. The senior had three tackles for loss, including a huge hit on Joseph Yearby for a loss of two.

Man I would've loved to see/hear that hit.

Duke Johnson and Dallas Crawford were standouts at Miami’s first scrimmage of #CanesCamp

Crawford just makes things happen. So glad Al came in and got him on board. His play, if unspectacular, is infectious and his attitude is undeniable.

Always wanted him at safety, kids a football player.

Who knows what to make of all this...I was going to write something about the defense getting gashed because I know Frito is a imbecile but who knows what actually happened. Also no TD's throws by the QBs? Whatever 16 days away.

Wow teams had open practices in the ******* 80's and early 90's when they could completely control the environment before everyone had the internet, smart phones, etc…Closed practices are not only to hide game plans, players' strengths/weaknesses, etc…but most importantly to help keep injuries and their severity as confidential as possible.
Miami does not need a better relationship with the public via open practices. They have Canesfest or whatever it's called for that bull****. The way Miami gains public interest is to win and/or be exciting--heavy emphasis on the winning part.

What's going unnoticed is Perryman had 3 tfl's. That means the nose tackle is giving the linebacker space to make tackles behind the line and keeps the OL from getting to the second level.

Soiled garbage is a bit strong, no? Heaps has come in and worked his butt off. He has obsessively studied and prepared for this series. What's wrong with a guy playing like it's his last shot? Sports are filled with redemption stories. You have a former #1 QB recruit playing like there's no tomorrow and complain about it. Maybe the trainwrecks at BYU and Kansas were a blessing in disguise for us. Kaaya is the future but even Duke said he struggles to read the defense. (Which is normal for a kid who just stepped out of highschool three months ago)

Or our Oline is ******* awful.

(Just tapping in to the CIS negativity)
