Fernando Mendoza

It seems Mendoza stock and public perception has raised a lot since Arnold, Moss, Mensah, etc have dropped off the board.

His 44 sacks (#1 in the country) with his average time to throw being 2.5 seconds...scares me and gives me reason to pause. I'd have to look way deeper into this (is he missing open reads, are his wrs so bad they are never open?, etc).

Mendoza isn't high up there on my list, but if the option is blindly trusting Emory, then you absolutely take Mendoza.

I am curious, how would yall rank these random qbs for Miami?

Mendoza
Ewers
Beck
Avery Johnson
Rocco Becht
Julian Sayin
Air Noland
Josh Hoover
Sawyer Robertson
the only people who would be "blindly trusting Emory" is the fanbase, and who gives **** what we think from behind our keyboards? Miami's offensive staff wouldn't be "blindly trusting Emory". He's been in their system for two years; they have seen him every day.

So has Mendoza visited? When portal guys come on a visit, do we put them through any basic drills so we can do a quick eyeball test or is it all based on tape?

he had some good plays but he was mostly meh last year and idc if he lost a testacle running for a first round. give me the best player not the most grit at QB.

im looking at the playoff teams that are left - i cant see anyone (arch aint leaving) that would be a huge upgrade unless they think they can rehab q. ewers (who i think is gone to UNC or draft) or Carson Beck (hard pass he was TVD esque this year for UGA).

Whether it’s Emory, FernGully or someone else at QB, Mario has to hit on the next DC hire or I might be taking a sabbatical in 2025.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say one of @PIPO favorite movies is Remember The Titans.

I don’t disagree regarding his accuracy. Having only really played 1 year as a starter, I feel like he could bring those numbers up to 65% and his running ability is an added plus:

GIven that Dawson believes a QB is either accurate or not accurate and that it is very difficult to teach accuracy because college-level QBs already have a set throwing motion, I would guess this guy would be a non-starter with him.

One thing is for certain - we need the QB within the next two weeks or so imo.

Portal WRs dropping around us like flies, Fields is extremely talented and now looks like he’s off the board. Need something to tell them.

Going into the 2025 season losing your top 4, maybe 5 pass catchers if Brown leaves…and not closing on WRs in the portal would be inexcusable, especially considering the passing product we just put out in the field in 2024.

With you on McCord. I remember someone here saying they’d take Emory over McCord which was….something.

Regardless of ALL THIS. My point has never been that Mendoza sucks. I think he’s fine. My main skepticism is that he’s good enough to lift a team that needed superhuman efforts to win 10 games and lost a ton of skill production, and if bringing him in was going to put a dent in the NIL budget that would prevent us from bringing in the necessary supporting cast I’d spend it elsewhere, personally. But I also have literally zero insight into what that looks like, I just know big numbers were getting tossed around for him.

That's fair. I would simply point out that we have some...new...NIL money. People should be less-concerned about "total budget". The real budget is "not paying outrageous money for one player" that might cause unreasonable expectations for everyone else.

Having said that, I'll just reiterated...Cal had quite possibly the worst field-goal-kicking in P4 last year. If Mendoza had a kicker worth a ****, then Cal either goes 9-3 or 10-2. No matter what anyone thinks of Mendoza's physical traits, he certainly elevated a very pedestrian Cal offense (parrticularly when Ott was hurt).

That is all.

D$, a big shout out to you regarding Mendoza. On your video today, you actually won me over to really going after Mendoza.

The juxt was that Mario HAS to win next season and less than 10 isn't going to hack it and Emory is a much bigger risk than Medoza.

I’m an accuracy guy then mix in Dawsons offense. Being smart and accurate goes a very long way. Just take care of the ball and be efficient. If that happens we’ll be fine. That’s why I’ve been a Mendoza guy.

I think Accuracy is top 2 in terms of importance. I agree with what you say.

Cam improved his accuracy and generally, most QBs are what they are but Cam went from 60% up to 67% and I feel he left another 3% out there because in this offense he should’ve been at 70% taking some easier throws but Cam is just elite and made up for it in so many ways.

In the end, regarding Mendoza, who was at what, 70% this past season, he could go very well hit 73-75% in this offense and throw for 3,600+ yards since he threw for 3,000 at Cal.
