Everyone seems to know this except our DC

You guys act like Temple's defense was ****in' outstanding. They reached 16th in the nation playing against a bunch of scrubs and they had NFL players at their disposal.

Considering Temple hadn't sniffed a top 50 defense is decades that's outstanding.
If the defense you coach ever reached top 10 status we shouldn't be impressed?

Difference is...

Temple's defense had greater talent than everybody in their conference.

They get credit for recruiting and developing the guys but that's about it. 16th in the nation just isn't that impressive to me. Considering who they played, they could've easily been top-10.

I'm hoping you're being sarcastic, but sadly I know you're not. It's amazing what we do to try and discredit this staff. You act like they didn't recruit and develop those guys... also, you act like they're playing against a bunch of scrubs with bamas roster... they had temple talent too

Their "Temple talent" was still better than everybody in their conference.

When Golden and D'Onofrio were at Virginia their defense reached (relatively) the same ceiling. They had better talent at UVA and they also played better in-conference talent.

You measure coaches by what they do against equally talented or lesser talented teams. Good coaches blow those teams out. Against teams with superior talent, they're expected to struggle/lose but they get extra brownie points for making it a fight. (or actually winning)

I expect our defensive ceiling to be the same as Golden's/D'Onofrio's ceiling at UVA and Temple. The best we'll ever be is top-15. (maybe)

There is noooooo ******' way a simple influx of talent is gonna have this defense sniffing the top-10 all the way from the 80's-100's.

If we completely **** the bed next season, and lets assume it happens again the next year (No I dont want this to happen, just sayin), will people look at Golden the same way they looked at Shannon and Coker in 5 years?

if we get less than 8 wins next year, it will be worse

if they can get to 16 with this all of a suddenly awesome talent at temple..then i think they can do a bit better than that with our talent... granted, it's not going to happen from one year to the next, but i don't think that's the expectation.

temple recruiting rankings from 07 to goldens last year..

75 (independent)
72 (next best class in the MAC 79th)
89 (Third Best Class in the MAC)
75 (next best class int the MAC 82)

maybe we can stop pretending this guy was bringing in top 30 classes in a conference who's rankings normally don't start until the 70's.

lol we're going on year 4, what makes you think this year is gonna be so much better? Are we going to have to wait until year 6 to see top 20?

But go ahead and blame it on Thanks, Randy and

The talent they had at Temple didn't have to be awesome! They weren't playing against awesome talent.

Yeah, they'll have more access to talent at Miami but they'll also be playing against greater talent than they were at Temple. It evens out.

They had more talent than everybody in the MAC.

CFBstats

Go look at the top defenses in the country and tell me if all of those teams legitimately have top defensive talent. (or if they simply play weak competition)

I like Golden I honestly do. But if Pete Carroll who has now engineered one of the greatest pass defenses in NFL history in an era where others teams are getting lit up and Tony Dundy one of the best defensive minded coaches ever, say that 2-gapping across the board doesn't allow for aggressive DL play and takes forever to setup. I trust them over golden. As ppl have stated those MAC teams don't have elite Qbs there might be 1 in the conference every few years.

You simply can't justify giving up 500 yards passing to every opponent we play. You honestly think that a few new players is going to be the end all solution? Go back and look at the history books. We've allowed mediocre QBs to set school and career highs that hadn't be broken in decades. And that's with a pretty good secondary.

I'm all for giving Golden time but I want to see real improvement. Not racking up 20 sacks against FAU and Savannah State then telling me our sack numbers are trending up when we couldn't touch Wintson,Logan Thomas, brett renner in the pocket.

Also let this sink in. Golden's name had come up in every coaching search the last 2 years. This year he was only linked to Penn State? Why is that, because after ADs have seen the product on the field and it has cooled his hype. He cant live on having the 20th defense for a year while at temple when he's had more talent at Miami and can't do better than 80th.

Reminds me of the Wake Forest game with gaping splits between lineman, it was really an insult to Dorito. Their offensive coordinator figured he was too rigid to ever shoot the gap.

that was ALMOST more frustrating than louisville, duke, and vtech...almost lol.

for a team to come out with that rinky dink BS that wake did and we didnt even TRY to blitz is a joke

we would blitz the OLB who was outside the hash

He also said this, in the very same article.

“To be successful on defense, you need to develop a philosophy,” Carroll said at a coaching clinic while still at USC. “If you don’t have a clear view of your philosophy, you will be floundering all over the place. If you win, it will be pure luck.”

Our coaches not only have their philosophy, but a clear view of it as well. Now that philosophy doesn't lend itself all that well to instant results (eventhough they did alright with the most talented/experienced D we've had since their arrival), but going by the information we have (their track record at temple).. it not only works, but it provides good results long term.. and that's not even counting that they have access to much better talent here.

not sure if serious

Our University midget President doesn't know this.

Big boosters don't know this.

The BOT doesn't know this.

Because if anyone knew a damned thing, D'Onofrio would be gone, because Al would be gone.

I guarantee. This is Golden's last year here. Guaranteed.

he'd have to have a dumpster fire of a season to get booted..

Even if they crap the bed next year, I expect Al to be kept. Al navigated UM through the NCAA mess that he was blind sided with. I'm sure to our admin that is worth it to never fire him or his staff members as long as he wants to coach here. That's why I am pretty confident in saying that the only way he leaves is if he wants to. Our admin will not pull the plug on him because of what he's endured, whether he's a crappy football coach or not. This, I fear, is the reality.

thats whats coming

there's no way we only win 3-5 games ... anywhere in the 8-10 range and Al keeps his job.

8 wins is regression and should automatically be grounds for his termination. Hope you can agree on that, despite what we or you think the administration will actually do.

Good coaches adjust there schemes to the talent they have, ie Bill Belichick. When Onofrio and Al realize this then things will change

From the ESPN Super Bowl XLVII Player rankings - Insider - I won't post the entire article but of the top 10 players all but 2 were Seahawks (Manning #1 and D. Thomas #5)

Of the top 10 5 were on the Seahawks defense, these 2 really stood out:

2. CB Richard Sherman -- Seahawks
With all due respect to Darrelle Revis and Patrick Peterson, Sherman has established himself as the most effective cornerback in the league. The 49ers rarely threw at him during the NFC Championship Game, and when they did, Sherman made them pay. Say what you wish about Sherman's bravado, but he is a building-block player -- smart, prepared and perfect for the scheme.

3. FS Earl Thomas -- Seahawks
There isn't another defensive player on either team who is more important to his coach's preferred scheme. Thomas' range allows Seattle to play all that press-man coverage on the outside. He is the new Ed Reed, but more physical. Manning has gotten away with throwing some ducks against replacement-level defenders for San Diego and New England. Some of those won't fly against Seattle, and Thomas is a big reason why.
