He also said this, in the very same article.
“To be successful on defense, you need to develop a philosophy,” Carroll said at a coaching clinic while still at USC. “If you don’t have a clear view of your philosophy, you will be floundering all over the place. If you win, it will be pure luck.”
Our coaches not only have their philosophy, but a clear view of it as well. Now that philosophy doesn't lend itself all that well to instant results (eventhough they did alright with the most talented/experienced D we've had since their arrival), but going by the information we have (their track record at temple).. it not only works, but it provides good results long term.. and that's not even counting that they have access to much better talent here.
Eh, pat yourselves on the back all you want, but coaches are like doctors, you have a line a mile long on either side of a debate on what is best course of action.
Although Carroll used bits of that system with New England, he never got it fully up and running, and it was simply too much for college players, even the very talented ones at USC. “I was the defensive coordinator and putting the whole thing together [at USC], but our guys just couldn’t handle it,” said Carroll. “It was just too much stuff, and it was too much for the coaches.”
OMG
is this real life???? an NFL coach on the verge of going to the super bowl LITERALLY ECHOES WHAT WE HAVE BEEN SAYING...yet golden says we are trending in the right direction
not only that, but they had to revamp the roster, which doesn't necessarily take 3-4 years in the NFL.Yet the article is about how PC uses both 1 gap and 2 gap at the same time.
Not sure people got that.

OK, for those of you that are still backing Golden/Dorito, what is a legit timeframe for having a top 20 D? As noted, is it a legit goal to give 3-4 years till he has all the pieces, or should he be adapting a scheme to fit the pieces he actually has??? I'll hang up and listen.

I'm not backing Dnofrio at all. I'm all for him being replaced.
Just pointing out that the article is about PC using both 1 gap and 2 gap at the same time.
NOT the virtue of 1 gap over 2 gap as it's being made out to be.

Their first real class well be juniors this year. There's also no scheme to adapt to the skills of highsmith etc... a legit time frame is however long it takes as long as the win/loss is at a reasonable level.. if we're winning 10 plus games a year and the defense is ranked 30th I'm not going to ***** about it.

That's the difference between fans that approve and disapprove what Golden has done. Win/Loss is one data point. Once you dig deeper into the details you see what is really going on. Had we lost those games in a competitive manner this board wouldn't be so split. Getting handled like we did and the trend, well you know.
