DT Coach Joe Salave'a leaves to Arizona

Best of luck to Big Joe. A little worried that he's going to Arizona cause they might be looking for a new head coach next year.

Hope this doesn’t backfire. We’re currently in it for the highly ranked Poly kid at IMG

Just for the record, I’m of belief that we need someone Poly on staff - these kids are forever away from home and being family/cultural based, it would help the family and the kid feel at ease with someone on staff that understands their culture/values etc.

We better get another Samoan on staff. Growing up around few Samoans and how they interact with family, friends, and even acquaintances, I think it matters when recruiting Polynesian kids.

Does Georgia, Bama, OSU, Texas, Michigan and others all have poly coaches?

Does every championships team ever have a poly coach? Y’all overreacting to HAVE TO HAVR A POLY COACH!

Think we’ve actually got some good young talent at the DT spot and guys like Moten have been steadily improving

Looking forward to seeing what a new coach can do here

Per sources, Miami DL coach/associate head coach Joe Salave'a will be returning to Arizona-- his alma mater-- as the school’s new defensive line coach.

This is Mario saying, "It doesnt matter if we are friends, it was not good enough"

Good spot for him. Glad he landed on his feet but I and many others called it a bad fit from the jump. Never was a good recruiter.

Glad he had a hand in landing Francis though.
Old enough to remember when Joe got credit for Scott, Blount and Jones. Crazy we keep having to replace coaches that don't do anything. Really inspires hope that we are on an upward trajectory.

Depends what you call a bad fit. Seems everyone on here thinks only thing that matters is recruiting. Personally I think the Defensive Line Regressed tremendously last year when he fell back and Jason Taylor took over. Obviously Jason is a far better recruiter. No need to even have discussion towards that. However coaching his guys up and getting production out of them I didn't see that out of Jason Taylor at all last year I actually saw guys that were proven commodities regress only one I'd say I saw progress out of even though previously I saw plenty of progress in practice out of him as well would have been moton. But I'll give on the field he played a lot better last year. Personally I'd say the reason for that is because him able to do these double moves and stunts allows him to utilize his tool chest. That works for his style of game. Double moves and stunts though if you're going up against an offensive line with good communication then all you did is give them time to regroup all you're doing is slowing down your pressure. Double moves and stunts are used by guys who struggle to beat head up the man across from them. Do you use them from time to time Yes absolutely. You'd be a full not to. Cuz you never want to make it obvious where your pressure is coming from. But if all you do every down is the same thing and then your line starts getting stonewalled as a result of it, well maybe at that point you start to change things up a little. So for me as far as the defensive line coach someone that's actually calling are alignments our progressions the rest I like Joe far more as a d-line coach that I like Jason Taylor because I don't care about the recruiting anywhere near as much as I care about getting peak results out of the players that we do have. That's where the University of Miami has always separated itself. Now as a result of prioritizing Jason Taylor and all likelihood we just lost our Samoan connection. I'm definitely not happy about that prospect.

You must be Polynesian? I only know of 1 Polynesian kid we are recruiting next year that is the tackle for img. You not bringing in a coach just to get 1 guy a year
I'm not Polynesian, but grew up around enough of them in Southern California to know a little about their values. It's hard enough to pull these kids to the east coast.

It's not even about one guy, but if you want to keep a Poly pipeline open, it's much better to have one around than not.

Those are all contenders most years. Unless you're like Utah and you've got a Samoan community in your back yard, how do you expect to attract these kids. It doesn't have to be an on-field coach. An off field, support staff guy is probably good enough.

Even Georgia fans want Samoans and they could probably get some if they put one on staff.

Agree about the Samoan connection but it never played out like we anticipated. We got the Mauigoas and that’s it. The kid the followed from Oregon and never did anything.

I’m not a fan of JT either and Joe is certainly the better interior DL coach. The recruiting concern was he never really signed guys anywhere he’s been. He had like 1 4 star to his name in his career pre Miami. Of course that’s also pre NIL so it’s probably irrelevant. He just wasn’t going head to head with the guys recruiting for Georgia, Texas, Penn State, Ohio State, etc.

I think we need full new blood on the DL. Get JT out of here as well. I don’t want a recruiter only but there’s plenty of better options out there. Joe is a west coast lifer. Surprised he ever made the move here to begin with

Don’t know where the blame needs be placed - Guidry, Joe, JT - but DL play was disappointing. Easy target was the secondary, but DL was close behind.

The center we signed this year is not poly also?
