DC Candidates

Hartline also isn't the OC. Chip Kelly doesn't do **** recruiting other than identifying talent and reading his resume. He has his position coaches handle the relationships. Would love a set up like that on defense with an elite schemer.
Precisely the point. After this season’s fiasco, the No. 1 priority is a DC to put in a solid defense, scheme and make the proper adjustments. We went week 1 to 13 being outflanked and unable to contain anything off tackle. Get an adult to put in a system and leave recruiting heavy lifting to assistants. Doesn’t mean the guy can’t recruit, but hire a legit defensive coach.

Hartline’s title is literally CO-OC. The next question is why did they give him that title and pay him as much money as they did ? Also Chip Kelly is the exception , not the rule. Which is the go to by Cis.

Am I stooping in thinking that our DC is going to have a DB background and is basically in place?

We’ve brought in 4 DBs so far and are also expected to grab Lucas once Wisconsin released him from the gulag. That’s 5 total players.

That’s a lot of DBs to bring in without the DCs blessing or sign off.

Flip side is they’re overhauling the room to make the job opening even more enticing for whoever they’re talking too. A lot of clay to mold.

But just feels like that’s a lot of moves without knowing if the kids would even fit the system.

Seems like Nansen is unlikely to leave sark and kwiatkowski after just getting there, but imagine if it is him we would know rather soon given tonight’s result.

The thing about Nansen if he comes here to be DC vs staying at Texas is this is a promotion to call his own plays and be an actual DC. This is not a lateral move but a real promotion! You can bet the DC job will pay more (despite Texas $) and he does have 1 more poly to befriend after our most recent hiring. Let’s see what happens.

Johnny Nansen: https://texaslonghorns.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/johnny-nansen/3446

He fits the description: 25 years of coaching experience. 2 years calling plays at Arizona (2022 + 2023). Also Samoan so replaces Big Joe in that regard.

Can someone dive his 2-years as DC at Arizona?
2022 Arizona’s defense was ******. Like literally the worst in the country. But his second year there, they played great. 30th in total defense. 21 ppg. 239 passing yards per game. 118 rushing yards per game. They did commit a lot of penalties on defense and middle of the road at forcing turnovers (55th). They gave up 30 points or more in four games but two of them went to OT.

But they did play some prolific offenses in ‘23

Offense ranked:

Washington 7th (gave up 31)
USC 3rd (gave up 43 but in 3 OT
UCLA 8th (gave up 10)
Utah 11th (gave up 18)
Oregon St 32nd (gave up 24)
