DC Candidates

You know that if the DC is a good one who has options, and he wants to bring in certain staff and the coRch in Chief tells him he can’t bring them in and he’s got to use the guys there, the DC walks?
Coordinators don’t get that power tho no matter how good they are. Usually maybe a guy or 2 at most. Go look at any top DC in cfb and they didn’t hire the staff

aaron henry would be a weird and very underwhelming hire

he inherited literally one of the best defenses in the country and it's gotten significantly worse in most categories over the last two years

ryan walters left in December 2022 and henry was promoted to DC.. this is what it was:

were also 2nd in YPP defense in 2022

Henry era:

2023:

36th in ypp defense
83rd in scoring defense

2024:

60th in ypp defense
41st in scoring defense

if it was a bigger school than Illinois, he would have been fired... so why are we even considering him?

we suck again GIF

An OL coach who’s the HC and requiring an upper level DC to keep the coaches off the previous failed defensive staff?

Be prepared for a risky or underwhelming DC

Yeah, why? Because Mario probably tried saddling him with staph that would remain.
Very possible, but it is also possible that he didn’t like who some people banks wanted, and therefore that was a stumbling block too, even if he was willing to sacrifice his own guys. No idea, but both are plausible, even if one is more likely.

Which is separate but related to him even weighing in (too much- he is the HC so he has to weigh in) on the coaches on the defensive side at all when he knows nothing

I don't understand the mentality. I would want coordinators to own their side of the ball. And for position coaches to own their position. Why would a "manager" head coach not let them pick their staff?
Not sure to be honest but from the outside looking in i would guess and say for starters it could cause a army within a army effect. ( cohesion issues)As a head coach you probably want all your assistants being people you trust and have a feel for. The second thing is what happens when that coordinator leaves now your stuck with assistants you didn't hire if they don't take all the assistants with them and if they do now your going to have to replace a entire defensive staff again. Again I see both sides of the argument but my point is Mario isn't being some out of date caveman by not letting coordinators hiring their own staff. Most coordinators don't get to hire there own staff

Who said he is saying they have to keep the coaches? It’s already been said at least a couple of those guys won’t be back

Why does Banks want out of Tennessee? Are they not paying him? If so why? He just had their best D in a while. Do they not think he’s suitable anymore?

Strange how a Dcoordinator of a top 10 D is trying to get out so bad.
