DC Candidates

I cannot believe this board is not up in arms over what a disastrous hire Henry would be.
Little extreme.

I will agree that there not enough sample size to give a definitive feel for what his ceiling is.

His resume speaks to be that dude as it relates to evaluating, developing cornerbacks.

Could see this being the case in regard to Taylor, Nicholson, and maybe Joe. Gonna be difficult to lure a strong candidate if this is being asked (I'm a big fan of the first two names, btw).
I’m sure that’s exactly who it would be. None of them are worth keeping at the expense of getting an upper level DC

I hear you, but there's gotta be limits in these budgets, staff, NIL, operations....I can't imagine there's just this endless supply of money at UM....if that was the scenario I don't think we would have had such a lopsided Offense / Defense roster last season.
I’d bet the farm that the issue isn’t money. I’m guessing- just guessing - that it’s the coRch in chief saddling the DC with certain staff.

Pretty much this. Good coach, but I don’t think he is what we need right now because IMO, we need much more of an established veteran presence in that spot.

Every insider has been preaching about the need for an adult in the room. This is a 35 year old with two years of coordinator experience and one of them was terrible. He is not like some protege of a great defensive coach. This move would make NO sense.

aaron henry would be a weird and very underwhelming hire

he inherited literally one of the best defenses in the country and it's gotten significantly worse in most categories over the last two years

ryan walters left in December 2022 and henry was promoted to DC.. this is what it was:

were also 2nd in YPP defense in 2022

Henry era:

2023:

36th in ypp defense
83rd in scoring defense

2024:

60th in ypp defense
41st in scoring defense

if it was a bigger school than Illinois, he would have been fired... so why are we even considering him?

i like many are probably chooins gto believe that it's such a hilariously dumb move, that it can't possibly be true

I mean even guidry's defense at marshall was ranked #1 in the country and top 10 in several metrics. no way we land this portal class and get a bad DC like henry

Who the **** is Aaron Henry. Thought we were going out for a splash hire by stealing a top DC from another team

Why does it seem like our fanbase is the only fanbase whose obsessed with this letting coordinators hire there own staff stuff? It rarely happens in college football so whether right or wrong its not like Mario is some kind of outlier in that respect. Everyone brings up Dabo hiring Brentt Venables but Dabo didn't let Venables hire his own staff either. In fact I don't think they changed any defensive coaches that were there the year before Venables got there.
I don't understand the mentality. I would want coordinators to own their side of the ball. And for position coaches to own their position. Why would a "manager" head coach not let them pick their staff?

you know coordinators usually don’t hire the assistants right? Banks didn’t bring in any of the staff at tenn
You know that if the DC is a good one who has options, and he wants to bring in certain staff and the coRch in Chief tells him he can’t bring them in and he’s got to use the guys there, the DC walks?

I don’t think it’s Henry. Would be weird to go with a guy that has minimal experience as a play caller and a limited coaching network to pull assistants from.

I don't understand the infatuation with Henry…Defenses at Ill have gone backwards since he took over the reins from Walters. Definitely seems a strong DB coach though.
