DAY 9 PRACTICE THREAD - WITH DAY 9 INTERVIEWS

@mattyports: On Kaaya, Denzel Perryman said "I can't rattle him for nothing." On Heaps: "He's about my height but he gets the job done."

Whats your interpretation of what he really is saying? lol

Translated loosely to, "I'd rather line up against Heaps than Kaaya"

According to Christy Chirinos, he said Heaps was the same way -- difficult to rattle

I'm not vested in who starts at QB. No one here sees every practice and really knows what's up and the only one claiming it's an obvious runaway choice is D$, so you have to at least be skeptical. But regardless of who gets the nod, I'm **** thankful our coaches brought in Heaps. That it's a Heaps/Kaaya battle says it all. If I'm going to roll with a true freshman, I'm glad he at least gets his *** pushed by competition and that we have someone on the sideline to step in if he's hurt. Very disappointed that Olsen couldn't be counted on to even fill in in that roll. I'm hoping we see some miraculous growth from him this year, or he will need to give us our scholly space back.

I haven't been active enough on the boards to keep up. What has D$ had to say in this regards?

Brad Kaaya is better than Jake Heaps. Right now. By a lot. He is more accurate, takes less sacks, throws half as many picks, has better movement in the pocket, has better movement outside the pocket, has more arm strength, can see over the line, and makes more throws.

If Brad Kaaya doesn't start, I will be surprised and quite frankly disturbed. This is not based on Vine videos or reporter tweets. That's all I will say about that.

Jake Heaps and Jermaine Grace were among the standouts in today’s morning session of #CanesCamp

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – One day after their first scrimmage of #CanesCamp, the Miami Hurricanes maintained a high level of intensity and competition on the Greentree Practice Fields Thursday morning.

There were noteworthy plays on both sides of the ball as the Canes continued preparation for their 2014 season opener against Louisville on Sept. 1.

"We showed some good signs and some bad signs," running back Duke Johnson said about the scrimmage. "We came out today trying to clean things up, and we'll be back out here later today to get the things that we didn't finish this morning."

In the 7-on-7 period, redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen threaded a pair of passes to freshman Braxton Berrios for first downs.

Senior Ryan Williams also turned heads in 7-on-7s, hitting freshman David Njoku twice for big gains. The first completion was the biggest, putting up six points on a 55-yard touchdown, but the second completion may have been more impressive as Williams put the ball between Njoku and the sideline on a perfectly thrown corner route.

Once the Canes moved into 11-on-11s, the defense made a significant impact. Linebacker Jermaine Grace jumped an underneath route to intercept a pass and return it for a touchdown. Tyriq McCord, who recovered a fumble in Wednesday's scrimmage, was putting lots of pressure on the quarterbacks and Olsen Pierre batted a pass at the line of scrimmage to get the defense off the field.

"That's one thing that Coach D'Onofrio preaches to the defensive line, and even with linebackers - whoever is blitzing, make sure you get your hands up," linebacker Denzel Perryman said.

Offensively, senior Jake Heaps had a connection with the running backs early in the 11-on-11 period. Heaps had 15-yard plays to Gus Edwards, Trayone Gray and De'Andre Johnson, but he also found receivers Herb Waters and Braxton Berrios for plays of over 20 yards.

The transfer quarterback's most impressive throw may have been a perfectly threaded pass up the seam to tight end Beau Sandland for a 20-yard gain.

"I feel like I did a good job of running the operation and completing passes, but the biggest thing is continuing to get better," Heaps said about the scrimmage. "At this point, after yesterday and today's practice this morning, I'm feeling good about where I'm at and the progress that I've made. Over the next few days, this is really going to be a big push. We need to get better as a team. This is the last little bit that we have to get better and hone in on our own technique before we start getting ready for Louisville."

Freshman Brad Kaaya also shined during 11-on-11s, hitting senior Phillip Dorsett for a first down and showing poise under pressure when he delivered a pass to Stacy Coley for a 15-yard gain despite having McCord half a step away from him at the time of his release.

"The first two weeks, what I see from Brad is his maturity," Duke Johnson said. "You wouldn't think that Brad is a freshman quarterback, the way he talks, the way he handles the offense, the way he handles the plays, checks. He's able to read defenses. He doesn't do it as well as an older guy like Jake [Heaps], but he does it exceptionally well for a freshman."

I don't see any downside to the increased use of check-downs to RBs, FBs, or TEs. In fact, I think they go hand-in-hand with the opening up of the middle of the field. If a defense starts getting gashed (or even allowing consistent positive yardage on early downs) I can only imagine OLB's overcommitting to stop a flaring check-down receiver, leaving the middle of the field (broadly defined here as anything inside the hashes) more open than usual. I have no idea why this strategy wasn't used a TON more last year, other than a simple refusal by the QB, but I'm very optimistic that this offensive philosophy can unlock a good amount of longer, sustained drives...which can only be a benefit.

Any bets on Susan asking about the punters today before someone can press Alfred on if he actually narrowed the QB race to two horses?

Brad Kaaya picked off by Jermaine Grace for would be pick 6…before that play, Deon Bush almost did the same

That's just it, we're not winning a National Championship this year.... Let Kaaya sit and learn, then he can start for the next 2-3 years, and Allison comes in.... We have some big games on the road Louisville, Nebraska, & VT let Kaaya see what it's really like to play in front of a large hostile environment and not from under center... If Heaps can't get the job done then consider bringing in Kaaya or maybe Williams will be ready...

I've been calling Kaaya as the #1 for months now. It doesn't make sense to me, unless you think you are going to win the national championship, to start a 5th yr transfer IMO. We need some continuity. Kaaya can be the man for 3-4 yrs. Unless he gets the crap beat out of him it's going to make him better. He just seems to have that "IT" factor in him. Hope I am right.

This is why Heaps starts the opener on the road in a hostile environment and I'm totally fine with it.

Ding ding...

As much as I thought Morris gave us the best chance to win last year his inability to do certain things as a QB just made our offense to **** predictable and stagnat vs good defenses

I think he is saying the opposite, it looks like he is saying not to start the 5th yr transfer unless they think he is going to win the NC.

That's how I feel as well. Coley said in an early interview that this offence would be easy for a freshman to grasp. Well, it looks like this particular freshman is doing quite well. I have no issue with Heaps starting. The ONLY issue I will have is if Heaps starts and stinks, but Golden doesn't bench him. That would tick me off. We have QBs lining up to come here, so there is no need in redshirting Kaaya.
Seems like the players really notice Brads calm demeanor and that he checks down a whole lot.

Thats music to my ears, Snickers just threw into coverage no matter if Duke was wide open on the side.

Tucker speaking to Brads movement like Peyton is telling. Calm in the pocket, can create space to continue the progression and hit his check down.

Thats all he has to be this year, a conductor. We have the horses who are ready. Easy plays, easy throws, and they will make him look like a superstar! WE BALLIN THIS YEAR!!!!!!!

I would put Kaaya as first team QB in the first depth chart release just to gage how he handles being #1 the next couple of practices and going in to scrimmage #2 Monday. If he can stay consistent and run the O this weekend and in the scrimmage then I'd be more inclined to run with him for the season.

I still think Heaps is gonna be good enough but it sounds like Kaaya's ceiling is a lot higher.

I swear if Grace doesn't start and they keep Armbrister to start. I will flip out. Its clear as day. Move Kirby over to strong and bring Grace into weak side.

I think we need to wait longer than one scrimmage to anoint the next coming. Sounds like it is a two man race with Williams maybe getting back by Nebraska which seemed like his original goal. Practice reports do sound positive, but don't they always. Can't wait.
