DAILY DEBATE: What is the biggest issue on the defense?

A guy I know on the current team (an offensive walk on) told me that Jaden Harris is one of the faster guys on the team in terms of pure foot speed. But for whatever reason, it's not clicking for him mentally, so he's always late in breaking to the ball etc.

He also told me that Kam Kinchens was the guy who was getting everyone lined up properly and telling all the guys where to be and what to watch for pre-snap. But without him, they're all lost. He said that Kam Kinchens was like Cam Ward this year, ALWAYS in the film room. Seems like these current guys just don't have that same drive to spend hours studying.

Nobody has mentioned this another huge issue is our strength and conditioning coaches . We Don’t need people so big and stiff that it makes them a lot slower . Special teams coach is dumb as fck too , Cj didn he ever make past the 30 year line? dbs are horrible . Dc sucks and out dated . Blitzing from the safety like Diaz every time especially 10 yards away being that they run 4.9 is dumb as fck too.

It’s talent. The few guys with decent size/athleticism are simply not skilled football players. Most of our guys lack the stuff you can’t teach and aren’t being taught properly the stuff you can.

Cristobal. Even with a good defense, Cristobal’s coaching history shows he would have lost a game like GT at least once in the season because of lack of preparation and in game coaching ability. Literally every season as a P5 coach, his teams lost to vastly less talented opponents. So UM still loses at least one conference game not matter how good the defense might be. And assuming we had lost a game like GT (could have been Cal, VT, or any other one) and beaten Syracuse, we would be in a similar situation. Difference is we’d be in the ACC championship game- a loss to SMU would still make us a 2 loss team on the bubble.

Believe it or not, it could even be worse. If we went into the ACC championship as a 1 loss (factor in the guaranteed bad loss at least once during the season) and a “good” defense, but Cristobal’s poor prep and coaching showed up again against SMU and we got blown out, we could be passed by Clemson as the second ACC team. At least now we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot more.
 
The entire thing. I think it would be easier listing the things good about it than the things bad about it, would be a much shorter conversation.

I would go with playing guys who clearly suck #7 #1 #9 shouldn’t ever play. Play the younger guys who are superior athletes we lack speed. Also the scheme way too much man and leaving CBs on islands. Oh and yea too much stunting on DL

All the offense has to do is motion and a receiver will run free somewhere.

Its pretty universally known that the playoff committee will NOT penalize a team for playing in their conference championship game so your rant is misplaced.
 
Coaching. Again, looks like a Chinese fire drill. Could the talent be better, sure. But holy
 
1. Poor Evals/recruiting which starts w/HC.
2. Poor DC hire which starts w/HC.
3. Poor onfield communication which starts w/DC.
4. Poor Secondary which is slow, see #1.
5. Poor LB play, see #1.

I’ll stop at 5 as you see the reality of the situation.

so Mario cant recruit then if were still using the talent excuse 3 years in and the entire roster was flipped.
 
Biggest issue on D is there is none. No pass rush line backers weak and the secondary is like we play with 10 players. Coaching lack of adjustments sucks. And sorry to say yea we have on paper the number one offense but your game plan has to be around a D that can’t contribute.
 
Our LB play was awful this year. Our MLB regressed. He can blitz and that’s about it. WB underwhelmed. Popo & Pruitt are upgrades. Safety play bad. 1CB. Our DL needs more talent too. Only guy striking fear is Bain. Baron bad. And then tackling?! WTF!!!! Tackling is a frame of mind. Staff needs to dedicate massive amount of time to tackling fundamentals. Heads up, wrap up, grab cloth, keep your feet and get the MFer on the ground. I came away thinking we are a lil soft down the stretch. If you can’t tackle your defense is gonna suck.

Secondary was terrible. No qb on defense to make sure we were aligned properly and the talking in the back 7 was ****n terrible. Oh yea, the de’s couldn’t set the edge consistently for ****. Seemed fitting that cuse sealed the game on a jet sweep that we gave up at will vs gt.
 
There are probably several factors at play but, to me if the safeties were in better pre-snap position AND we reduce missed tackles by half, defense would be fine. Bonus would be better and concise communication from the linebackers
 
If the players are dumb ( they are ) who recruited them ? The secondary recruiting has been awful , who recruited them ? The DL was a huge bust , why? Most of the defensive portal additions sucked , why? I think you see where I’m going here.
