DAILY DEBATE: What is the biggest issue on the defense?

Yea assuming for the sake of argument that somehow a team with this budget has players worse than everyone else in this league full of basketball and nerd schools, if their eval and development is so poor that they looked at this group and thought "we good" and then this is the result then we can't trust them with the job of improving the talent either.
 
Let’s start at the DL and move back

DL - we are Small at DT/have alot of tweeners. We don’t have the big boys to dominate on the inside. Barrow and Mesidor are what they are. Smaller DTs who feast on weaker competition, but can’t make as much of an impact against the run or against bigger OLs. 2025 needs to be all about Moten, Scott, Jones, Horton, etc. we need those guys to develop. Which begs the question, can Big Joe develop and coach them up

DE - we’re not long enough (when is the last time we batted a pass down), twitchy or quick enough on the edge to scare QBs/OCs or cause problems. Bain should potentially be a DT. Barron is inconsistent, Bryant and Alston are somewhat tweezers too. We need our 2024 class of DEs to develop and take over (Pickett, Lightfoot, McConathy, Rudolph, Blount).

LB - Slow and not physical enough. Kiko was exposed in space this year, Wes has flashed some but is still small, Pruitt looks small. Popo has flashed. It’s time for Bobby Washington to make a move.

CB - terrible evals and recruiting the last few years, we got lucky with OJ. Porter is small, Mack is small, Robby Washington is small, Stafford is small. You get the point. And then maybe we have bad DB coaching, Brown and Richard looked great their first few games last year, but somewhat are regressing

S - similar to CB, bad recruiting and small non- instinctive players ( Harris and Marquise)
 
The dumb players narrative never holds water with me. As John Lennon said, "I'm an artist, man. Give me a tuba and I'll get you something out of it".

If you're a coach that needs a certain type of player to not have the worst defense in college football then you're a s***ty coach. End of discussion.

I always say when you’re this bad its never one thing

The scheme got exposed and we don’t have enough talent. Db room is trash and kiko is trash and we kept playing him

To me the season was lost when we got complacent in the portal for dbs. Mario brushed it off in an off season interview, he kept saying he puts the pressure on the coaches to get younger players ready to play…bro we are trying to go deep on the playoffs

We have cam ward and supreme talent on offense, just patching together the secondary hoping for the best case scenario is just malpractice. We probably wont have a qb or offense like that again bro

Meesh powell was our top portal db, he played nickel at Washington we saw he was mid at it and moved him to free safety lmao. Porter was a top acc cb last year he had to play nickel, we brought no competition to push jaden harris the depth was just unproven guys and freshman. Literally just a patched up db room for the most important year of the mario era so far

Thank god oj was ready early because besides porter who was the other proven cb on our team? Literally nobody and they only brought in a g5 cb who is a sophomore and he got benched. More than scheme and coaching they failed entering the season with that DB personnel.

If guidry cant recruit talent here in hs and portal then he needs to go, his scheme is already gimmicky to me with the unnecessary stunts and slants n **** like dude this isn’t the mac lol

I don’t know if it’s been asked, but did I see during the game Salave’a didn’t have a headset on? I thought they showed him on screen twice and neither time he had one on. Or maybe it was someone who looked like him.

But if it was him, why wouldn’t he have one? Isn’t the limit 23 now? Seems like an associate head coach should have a headset or am I wrong there?

bingo. you cant blame manny for a completely turned over roster 3 years into a new regime. this is on mario and the staff. if the players suck, blame the god recruiter.

A guy I know on the current team (an offensive walk on) told me that Jaden Harris is one of the faster guys on the team in terms of pure foot speed. But for whatever reason, it's not clicking for him mentally, so he's always late in breaking to the ball etc.

He also told me that Kam Kinchens was the guy who was getting everyone lined up properly and telling all the guys where to be and what to watch for pre-snap. But without him, they're all lost. He said that Kam Kinchens was like Cam Ward this year, ALWAYS in the film room. Seems like these current guys just don't have that same drive to spend hours studying.

That's super frustrating as a coach. (when kids aren't studying film)

Our film app tells us exactly how much film a kid is watching during the week. I started moving my depth chart based on how much/little film they were watching. Benched a 3-star D1 commit for a 5'8" kid with no offers based on film study and knowing his plays. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Can't put a kid out there on testing day if he ain't been studying for the test.

Was Powell solid at Washington?

I know UW usually plays good defense.

I liked Powell but he was limited with his speed. Has a great attitude and like you said didn’t have any help.

Yeah i watched more UW games living up in this area... Powell was solid but also had a surrounding cast that didn't force him to have to be a super hero. Isn't saying much i know.
 
Another reason Guidry needs to go is the fact that he has said from the jump the safeties in his system take at least a year to understand it. We don’t have the players or time for that nonsense.
 
Old school blitzing from the safety 10 yards back with db who run 4.8 . To slow at de which makes me question the strength condition coach . De need to be 230 to 260 fast not 285 stiff and slow . Same for lb slow as smoke off **** , dbs lol
