DAILY DEBATE: What is the biggest issue on the defense?

Mario doesn't know defense. Therefore, we NEED a DC who is a **** of a tactician and evaluator. We then need assistants who are all ace closers on the trail, to partner with Mario to get the dudes signed. The evaluation has to come from the DC himself.

Getting lined up correctly is the most basic crap. Setting the edge, communication, being multiple in games, in game adjustments, playing press when needed, Speed, not being lined up for the snap. This is off the cuff. It has literally been a clown show. I would be shocked, shocked if someone could unbiased, evaluate this D and not come to the conclusion that the DC must go.

DB who looks lost

DC who looks lost

At no point during the season did you see improvement or turning the corner… they were god awful from beginning to the end… that’s on coaching as much as the players. Other teams even ones we laughed at showed marked improvement by the end even the gators who were talking about canning the coach

Biggest issue is scheme. You coach what you have , not what you wish you had. Guidrys job is literally to coordinate schemes that work for what we have . He coaches to stop the other teams plays without considering if we actually can execute that plan

Reuben needs to play DT. he could be just like Mason Graham who will be a first round pick not every dt needs to be 300+ pounds.

There is zero communication between position groups. It appears the only time they work together is on gameday.

In this defense, LB and DB need to work in tandem and know each others responsibilities, and they sure as **** don't in run or pass.

Williams and Kichens were much better about this, the drop off is too steep to Davis and Powell, but that's ultimately on the coaches.

IQ first

Team speed 2nd - slow on the DL, slow at LB, and slow in the secondary.
This is literally what I have been saying word for word. Plus our coaches have to get some fire in their **** and get in some people's face and stop babying these players.

From my untrained eye we were stubborn in our “scheme”. We constantly stunted the DL, even though teams knew we would, causing to give up the outside. If we didn’t stunt, we dropped a DL into coverage when teams knew that we did that. We left our CB’s and LB’s on islands in coverage when they have proven to be poor in space. It seemed we decided we were a man team and we would live or die with that no matter what. We had 1 game plan and used it against every team. It was extremely frustrating to watch. Nobody we played were confused against our defense. When we won, it was better had superior players.

when you cant line up properly week in and week out and are basically ****ed pre snap, its on the coaching. that drunk ******* didnt set any of his guys up for success. what he did to the slow *** samoan this year was cruel and unusual. hes a nice kid and played well last year in a certain role. he completely ****ed him over putting him in spots where he had zero shot

Could be a multitude of things but the most glaring to me is alignment.

Far too many guys moving around before the snap, pointing, confused, etc.

The crap is wild to me, because we don't even have that on the high school level. I don't understand how it's so hard to lineup. 🤷🏻‍♂️

We "cross train" our Safeties with our Nickels so that they ALL know exactly how/where to line-up versus different WR sets. Find the #2 receiver from the sideline and that's your first clue. So even if our Nickel somehow ends up on the wrong side, he knows exactly where to line-up and what technique to play. He essentially becomes the Free Safety and the FS becomes the Nickel. Now they don't have to flop and run across the formation pre-snap. And if the Nickel, Strong Safety and Free Safety are similar athletically (ours are) then you're golden.

There's no reason for defenders to be running across the field pre-snap.

GUIDRY GUIDRY GUIDRY and most of the players. No team speed. Slow DLs/LBs and CBs.

Everything and I'm not being provocative or a smart ***. No team on our schedule came into our game scared/fearing our defense...NO TEAM
In another thread, there was a "fake" tweet that was attributed to Fran Brown about how other teams offenses was basically tripping over themselves to face us! Everybody in that thread believed it until clarified it was fake. The reason it was so believed wasn't because of gullibility (which could be the case in some cases here; this is CIS) but because the defense has been terrible the entire season. Every ACC team super-ceded their season's average on offense...EVERY ACC TEAM. Everything...take your pick.

Simple...One: we're awful at the basics.
Two: we have a lot of guys who can only be used in just one way to be effective.

Lack of adjustments when the plan not working stands out to me too. We got beat on the same plays at the end of the Gtech game that we got beat on in the 1st Q.

Against 'Cuse looked to me Guidry tried to limit Gadsen and the slot WR by bracketing with our safeties. Basically conceded Allen out of the backfield, and was betting on our pass rush getting home before McCord could chuck it deep outside 1on1. They just put their slot Pena outside a lot more, and that first drive of second half shoulda made it clear we needed to give help with our safeties outside. Looked like Guidry just doubled down and started blitzing more and still left our corners on islands.
