DAILY DEBATE: What is the biggest issue on the defense?

The defensive coaching staff needs to be on the same page…we are not in sync as a unit…to much miscommunication from our back 7 which leads me to believe the coaches ain’t getting along….play the younger kids a lil more..all this I dont like to sub mess is just dumb….

It's coaching. Like...what are we doing here thinking it's anything else.

This isn't going up against Georgia and Bama and losing by one score, realizing our talent level is the difference and we need to upgrade. Something is fundamentally flawed in the teaching. Really bad teams are doing extraordinary things against us. Things they don't do against any other team they play.

What is the biggest issue on the defense?

IQ first

Team speed 2nd - slow on the DL, slow at LB, and slow in the secondary.
From watching spring, the season, and in-person Saturday, Cam Pruitt looks to have the ideal level of speed + violence/aggression on the second level. Hoping for a monster offseason

Thankfully Kiko and Meesh will be leaving. Jaden is a good character guy, but he needs to be playing in mop up duty. I’m still not that high on Wes either. We definitely need a few guys, but poor coaching has made the lack of talent more evident.
I’m along the same lines

Sometimes it’s the “next guy is the best guy” excuse but with Mario this actually should be the case right? 2023-24 classes had a lot of good players so those guys should be stepping into those roles now. A lot of players on the bubble for next year

I’m not as quick to write off players as some but there’s certainly some guys that are hitting put up or pack up time

What happened to him Saturday? He only got a few snaps kid is a difference maker waiting to happen

SIAP but as soon as the game was over I blocked out everything Miami

Lack of talent and experience in the back 7.

Lack of difference-makers overall.

We need a serious infusion of talent. The 2024 class was a good start. We desperately need a good hit rate with that class. Hopefully one of the DBs from incoming '25 class can get into the rotation like OJ.

Every coach on that side of the ball.

Guidry's scheme is wack and he doesn't make adjustments. He's not a good teacher because these guys don't seem to know what they are doing before every snap. One little shift from the offense and they all start looking confused like its Chinese algebra. And he is in charge of the safeties.

Every praises Jason Taylor but his unit is not performing and backsliding. They played better when it was just Big Joe coaching.....too many cooks in the kitchen.

D. Nic is a good recruiter but the backer play is horrible.

Cornerback coach is ***!

No leadership from our players. Who is the leader on the defense??

- lack of talent in the secondary.

- use of personnel.
- We let Baron not set the edge for like 5 weeks before making a change there. No way they didn't see this in practice before the season too. What hurts the most is not making the change during the GA tech game when we needed it most.
-Jaden Harris should have never started (Also no way he wasn't making these mistakes in practice as well). If we're going to have terrible mistakes and angles every play, then play someone young. They'll grow as the season goes on.
- Our Mike is not a good player. We know he's a limited athlete. But he also misses tackles in the hole consistently. He's best when they blitz him. Which means he should have a limited role and a younger player should play most downs. If they make mistakes, so be it.
- scheme
- To neutralize our pass rush, teams would get the ball out quick and we made it easy for them to do so. Nothing easier than seeing man coverage and a matchup you like pre-snap and immediately targeting that person. Personally, I think we needed to play a lot more Cover 2/3 this year. We play a ton of man and we simply don't have the players to do it. Although certain situations you have to play man and it is what it is.
- Playing man a ton on 3rd and longs also creates opportunities for qbs to scramble when everyones backs are turned. if you do that then your pass rush better have some gap integrity.
- Our stunts never got home and completely killed our pass rush lanes. Our hands never got up either at the line (which i think is related). Limited batted balls all season.
- fundamentals
- not knowing your alignment and constant confusion about assignments and what to check in to once the offense gets set. if you don't know what to do, you'll play slower than you are. And everyone watching knows some guys in the back seven don't have the best hips as it is
- every time a team goes jumbo, we're out leveraged presnap. It's comically bad.
Nice post. Agree with all of this, including the need to simplify and play more cover 2/3. Something is WAY off in the secondary, from our inability to sort assignments to our CBs leveraging receivers inside with zero safety help to people constantly being out of position.

We bought fools gold in the portal outside of 2 players. Lots of bad evaluations on recruits as well the past 3 years. Somebody needs to be hired as a talent evaluator for the portal and high school. Someone proven. As much as the star rankings make us think the talent has improved drastically, it hasn’t. Still no excuse to lose to middle of the pack ACC teams.

Defensive staff needs to get it together. If there is a fly in the ointment time for him to exit.
