DAILY DEBATE: What is the biggest issue on the defense?

Levels to the issues, but in terms of making our defense look functional, it’s coaching. Sure, the talent particularly in the secondary isn’t close to what it needs to be but not as bad as it looks.

There is now tape on Guidry and they knew what to attack unlike last year. We also have been putting players in the wrong position. We continue to play Kiko in spots where he is easy to pick on. We played Porter out of position most of the year and didn’t put Powell in the slot. Then there was the issue of being utterly ****ed by any sort of motion. Just bad coaching all around.

Now what happened against Syracuse is sort of different than the rest of the year but it was a culmination of things that boiled over. We made some **** QBs look great. Syracuse on the other hand had a great passing attack and our issue got even more exposed.

Pre-snap

They are almost never in position when the ball is snapped and always looking at the sideline. Total lack of communication and poor coaching.

Of course the results were so bad, the process was was abysmal. And that’s all coaching. They were set up to fail.

Guys constantly out of position. no gap integrity, everyone trying to be a hero, #7 sucks, #1 can't cover yet in game 12, Allen motioned out wide from the backfield and who follows, #1, who didn't see that 25 yards coming? Constantly out schemed, and plain as day the players either freelanced all game, or had no clue what to do.
I thought the same. I saw Kiko get in coverage, here’s 30 yards down the left seam

IQ first

Team speed 2nd - slow on the DL, slow at LB, and slow in the secondary.

Being slow at all 3 levels AND being at an alignment disadvantage most plays is a deadly combo

Add in the communication problems and lack of adjustments/variety….. it’s no surprise the defense was this bad

Lack of speed in the back 7. Or not enough of it. We need those LB spots to be wide open as far as comp in the Spring. We need instant help all across the secondary. Front 4 wasnt as bad as posters are making it seem. They got no help in the back 7.

Specifically-
Safety play was beyond bad for a school with Miami's safety history.

LB play was bad for a school with Miami's LB history. It's a real shame Hayes, Pruitt, Pickett, Bryant, Popo didn't get more snaps all year.

Mesidor played out of position all year. Rotate Mesidor, Barron, Bain, Blount at SDE and 5T. Play Bryant, Picket, Washington, Alston at Jack/WDE to get more speed on the field.

We didn't have a NG type. Moten and Jones are likely the two closets to NGs and Moten plays undisciplined.

Overall- we aren't able to get our talented kids on the field because the scheme asks for too much thinking vs letting them Man up and beat the guy in front of them.

The biggest issue? Probably that we have a moron calling the shots on defense. Guidry refused to make any adjustments throughout the season and he cost us the greatest season this program had in 20 years.

There was no player that played Saturday that could rush the passer based on speed. it was all bull rushes crash the blocker not anyone from a dl to lb to db or s that tried to beat anyone with speed

Lack of communication/not knowing assignments Even in Cuse game when they motioned or had bunch sets you see our secondary look confused as multiple people waving their hands or motioning to come over and no one moves. This was game 12 of our season and it was still happening.
This is the biggest issue and indictment on Guidry to me. The talent is what it is, it’s not good enough but it **** sure isn’t worst in the ACC bad. But when you’re 3 months into the season and the defense gets completely lost at any motion, tempo, or anything that doesn’t give them a full five or six seconds to adjust to the offensive formation, that’s coaching. It’s why GT’s thing of getting into one set then clapping and going to a completely new formation absolutely killed us. Any time teams went tempo we had guys looking at the sideline at the snap, that’s inexcusable. If we get beat because the other team out-talented or out-executed us on a given day, fine. But losing and getting torched because we can’t simply get plays in and get aligned, that’s inexcusable.

Bingo, we were routinely not ready which just leads to easy offense. So apparent against Syracuse, easy 7-10 yard completions because the ball was snapped as the DBs were milling about.

- lack of talent in the secondary.

- use of personnel.
- We let Baron not set the edge for like 5 weeks before making a change there. No way they didn't see this in practice before the season too. What hurts the most is not making the change during the GA tech game when we needed it most.
-Jaden Harris should have never started (Also no way he wasn't making these mistakes in practice as well). If we're going to have terrible mistakes and angles every play, then play someone young. They'll grow as the season goes on.
- Our Mike is not a good player. We know he's a limited athlete. But he also misses tackles in the hole consistently. He's best when they blitz him. Which means he should have a limited role and a younger player should play most downs. If they make mistakes, so be it.
- scheme
- To neutralize our pass rush, teams would get the ball out quick and we made it easy for them to do so. Nothing easier than seeing man coverage and a matchup you like pre-snap and immediately targeting that person. Personally, I think we needed to play a lot more Cover 2/3 this year. We play a ton of man and we simply don't have the players to do it. Although certain situations you have to play man and it is what it is.
- Playing man a ton on 3rd and longs also creates opportunities for qbs to scramble when everyones backs are turned. if you do that then your pass rush better have some gap integrity.
- Our stunts never got home and completely killed our pass rush lanes. Our hands never got up either at the line (which i think is related). Limited batted balls all season.
- fundamentals
- not knowing your alignment and constant confusion about assignments and what to check in to once the offense gets set. if you don't know what to do, you'll play slower than you are. And everyone watching knows some guys in the back seven don't have the best hips as it is
- every time a team goes jumbo, we're out leveraged presnap. It's comically bad.

Everything, players seem extremely confused, we dont seem to have specific gameplans so OCs know EXACTLY how to attck us like a previous team did and we lack talent and ability to evaluate on greentree..

The ability to evaluate is most startling I guess because I dont know how you have BOTH your starting safeties leave early, bowl game we are starting tiny corner backs at safety because we dont have any and then go into offseason and bring in no true safeties basically saying we are good with Jaden #7 and what he has shown. To say we only missed on nickle while having no body who could supplant a player who was completely lost all season long in every game is disgusting. We basically played 10 on 11 and he started EVERY GAME with no accountability.

There are multiple issues and I think they all live in the teaching room. Egos, teaching, hard work to game plan, and the ability of I accept I was wrong let’s adjust. They saw exactly what cuse was going to run, and still made no adjustments at the half. That is a blatant refusal that I screwed up game planning, but I do not want suggestions. Just like in a workplace if suggestions are not taken, the employees become disengaged. The players on the D look disengaged and like they are just over thinking and moving through motions. You have to completely overhaul that room. If coaches can’t be on the same page, then neither will the players. It’s that simple.
