Bottom line is, guy is going to live and die by his defense. He's not canning Dorito so we need to hope for the best.
The ONE thing I have held out some modicum of hope for, is that they coached scared the last two years, because they felt they were really up sh*ts creek personnel wise. I dont think they had much faith in the guys we had, and they coached scared trying to minimize the potential damage. Now... we can obviously argue about how successful the approach was, but he's not totally full of sh*t by saying as bad as it was, we still managed to win 9 games and go to a bowl. He's also not lying in that the offense really did a bad defense no favors last year. I mean real talk, but catastrophic mistakes cost us the VT game, and we could have had a fighting chance in the bowl against UL had the offense been able to do anything. The personnel situation on the defense is as bad as anything I remember on this team since 1997. The losses of EJ, Terry and Paul, simply crushed our depth at LB. Our talent and depth at S was also terrible. We also suffered from a total lack of a true NT, as Porter just never really took to the position, and Renfrow was a career backup at UVA who was the very definition of JAG.
I have held out a glimmer of hope, that with better players and more faith in their personnel, they WOULD get more aggressive and creative. They did play more aggressive at Temple, and even in their first year. I know people think Im an AG slurper and apologist, but the reality is I just feel we have no choice but to hope that these guys have a plan, and that they arent as clueless as they appear on defense.
There will be ABSOLUTELY NO excuse next year for not being able to play more aggressive man coverages, with TH, Gunter and Burns having experience. That is as good a trio of CBs as pretty much anyone in the country has. Bush and Jenkins healthy and with another year of experience, with hopefully Carter finally getting some burn, and maybe a kid like Hester stepping up, should really boost the talent level at S. I dont see how Huertlou and Wyche can be much worse than Porter and Renfrow. Chick and DP come back. AQM and McCord should be bigger, better and solid contributors. The major question marks will be Figs, Kirby, Armbrister, and who if anyone can step up at LB.
Next year is make or break for AG. If the defense is a disaster again, he's going to be mortally wounded as an HC. At a bare minimum he will have to shed Dorito, and by then its going to look like Coker's desperation when he slaughtered half his staff after the LSU debacle.
I DO think, that if this offense can sustain some drives, and keep the defense off the field more, its going to help no matter what happens. I mean the defense cant HELP but to improve if we have an offense that can actually convert some first downs and put together some sustained drives.
I cant honestly say I have much faith, but I have to at least try to hope that they can turn the corner on defense next year. We dont have to be lights out, but it needs to be at least an "average" defense in Division 1. It cant just collapse like it did late this year, and my hope is that better depth will help prevent that, at least to the degree we saw this year.
